Sudanese officials said Saturday they are working to criminalize the widespread practice of female genital mutilation after the transitional government approved a landmark draft law.

Under the proposed amendment to the criminal code, anyone found guilty of performing the procedure would be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press.

The law must still be ratified by a joint meeting of the Cabinet and the sovereign council, which assumed power after last year’s overthrow of longtime President Omar al-Bashir.

Wow, so progressive and brave.

Seriously, all foreign aid by Intl. organisations should be tied to banning dumb stuff like this first.

As for the developed world, all cases of child GM in GB (highest prevalence in Europe there I believe) should be treated with the utmost severity, including permanent loss of custody, and expressed deportation for the perpetrators if such action is legal (i.e. on a Visa, not a citizen).

Even if you can't really see this being enforced all that rigorously, still welcome news.

Excellent news.

Even if you want to sit there and say "the enforcement will be lax, this is just virtue signalling", it's still one step in the right direction.

Good!  I would be interested in seeing how well they enforce this new law for it to have any real meaning.

Sudan turning out better than South Sudan is definitely not something one would've expected.

I wouldn’t say this too quickly, as there is now a peace process in South Sudan. I think that now things will turn around for both nations as the internal conflicts are now sorting themselves out.
