I wonder how blacks and hispanics tended to feel about Prohibition.

There were black prohibitionists and black bootleggers.  I have no idea which side was more popular.  Hispanics were probably overwhelmingly opposed because they were mostly Catholic.

The way I view it, America had little in the way of a political left before the 1890s (obviously it existed before then, but it wasn't very powerful).  Before that, America had two parties that were mostly conservative.  As much as the American Civil War was a defining moment in US history, the divisions of that war seem to have very little bearing on modern politics.  It was right-wing infighting.

Here's my take:

All of the following can be true at the same time:

- The parties didn’t switch ideologies.

I'd say that they didn't switch ideologies, though they haven't remained static either.

- Vermont and Mississipi didn’t switch cultures.

They didn't switch cultures, but their cultures are a lot different than they were in 1860 or even 1960.

Quote
- Vermont and Mississipi switched parties.

And this is the part that no one can disagree with of course.
