Game Night (2019)

Above average comedy. Should be talked about and hyped more than I've seen. The first half is better than the second half, but it's an entertaining and cleverly written watch that I would definitely recommend.

Updated list of films we watched since my last post (how I grade the film):

- Escape Plan (A, Ahnuld was great)
- The Highwaymen (A-)
- Indecent Proposal (A-)
- On the basis of Sex (A, great film about Ruth Bader Ginsburg)
- Traning Day (B+, Denzel Washington was great, the story medicore)
- The Bone Collector (A-)
- 12 Monkeys (C+, the end was very unsatisfactory)
- Seven (A, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt is a huge combo)
- Bridge of Spies (A)
- Primal Fear (A-)
- Rush Hour, Rush Hour II & III (A, Jackie Chan is great)
- Gangster Squad (A)
- USS Indianapolis (A-)
- Poseidon (A-, great story and effects, but too many died for my taste)

- Mr. Brooks (A+, honestly one of the very best films I've ever seen. Kevin Costner playing a successful businessman who is (secretly) a cumpulsive murderer. As such, he outsmarts everybody, including a Detective plyed by Demi Moore).

Looking forward to The Equalizer 2, to be released on Netflix next week. The first part was one of the best films I've ever seen).

I would give 'Training Day' the same score, but my issue with the film is the massive, unbelievable coincidence that occurs with the latino gangsters and how stereotypical and lacking in subtlety they are. That really took me out of the movie. So I guess that falls within your "mediocre story" criticism, though that's really the only part of the story I had a big problem with.

I despise Darren Aronofsky, but I think this was his best film.

'Mother!' is a real oddity, even as far as Aronofsky films go. I still can't quite articulate my thoughts on it. I neither hated nor liked it, and I wouldn't even say it was "meh" or "okay."

For the first time in four months I've been to the cinema.

Last film I had seen seen in the theater in early March was The Invisible Man with Elizabeth Moss. Today I went to If Beale Street Could Talk.

Due to the ongoing lack of new international releases they're showing a lot of films from last year or so. Even Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining have reentered the regular program. But Christopher Nolan's new film Tenet will come soon.

Did you like it?

I found it to be extremely well made but the plot didn't "flow" in a good way IMO. Good movie, could have been great.

Yeah, it's kind of slow, but overall well done. Good acting in particular.

I have mostly been taking a break from movies lately, as I've been binge-watching The West Wing. Tonight, however, I watched Frost/Nixon, which I had never seen before. It's a solid movie, but it's got many of the typical flaws in modern biopics-- a shoehorned and out-of-place love subplot, bland music, and somewhat flat cinematography (though I think the style was greatly helped along by the faux-documentary approach the movie takes). The performances are great though, and I have a soft spot for political films.

Those shorts of hers didn't have a flag on them, not that they needed an X to mark the spot for her drooling fans.

Rewatched Sahara (2005). Wonderful film that doesn’t deserve the hate it got from critics or the box office.

Guns Akimbo (2020), starring Daniel Radcliffe and the source of the infamous "guy holding guns wearing bathrobe and tiger slippers in the middle of NYC" photo. The movie's a blast and very much resembled Nerve, which I was and am a huge fan of. That said, there was obvious cheesiness and suspension of disbelief, but overall solid and hilarious. Not sure yet on whether I'd watch again in, say, six months (I've seen Nerve at least twice and would easily watch again), but leaning yes.

Michael: 4/10, imaginative plot but I didn't find it very successful as a comedy

Raiders of the Lost Ark 4.5/10, I couldn't get very invested a lot in the plot and I didn't find the characters memorable at all

Eurovision The Story of the Fire Saga 3/10, but I'm generally not a fan of Will Ferrell's movies and Will's character didn't seem to belong to the rest of the movie's universe, the songs were quite good though

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat 7.5/10, yeah,  it's a fluffy extremely cheesy direct to video musical, but it rejoices so wonderfully in its cheesiness, it's has plenty of laughing out loud parts and the general melody of the songs is great and a total earworm

The Laundromat 5.5/10, the smaller plots are decent to good and most of the actors sell their roles, but it's weakened by a big lack of cohesiveness and very blatant exposition moments by Banderas and Gary Oldman that go for up to 5 minutes at a time, in a movie that's only 90 minutes long

The Incredibles 2: 7/10
Hacksaw Ridge: 7.5/10

Pulp Fiction: 5/10, the good parts were good but nothing amazing, but a lot of the time it was simply a meandering mess

Last night, I watched Interstella 5555, the anime adaptation of Daft Punk's Discovery album that they collaborated on with Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Studios. The whole movie is basically an extended concept video for the album and the story is told entirely through the songs and visuals, with no spoken dialogue.

I thought the movie was pretty fun and inventive and fit the music and lyrics well. I liked how Daft Punk and Matsumoto were able to convey so much about the characters, their conflicts, and the worlds they encounter with next to no diegetic explanations.

I've always been a fan of Matsumoto's visual style and storytelling (The Galaxy Railways is one of my favorite shows), so I enjoyed getting to see more of his work.

Mother! was very difficult to watch. Felt like a dream. I just kept disagreeing with the decisions that the characters were making. But made a lot more sense when I read up on the meaning of the film online. I will have to watch it again at some stage.

Watched the VVitch finally with my girlfriend.

I cannot believe this was made back in 2015 and I missed it for so long.

She hated it, which usually means it I like it, and it was......a great film. Given that my girlfriend was brought up as a hardline Catholic, she understands the religious relevance of The Wicker Man, The VVitch etc, but equally well, is more offended by their content.

I thought it was phenomenal, and one thing about Robert Eggers is era-correct production.

Both this and The Lighthouse really dumped you in to the time period and made you face the inevitable reality that people living at that time were faced with.

10/10. I wish all films were made with such vigour.
