A few weeks from now, there’s a good chance that those saying that Europe did so much better then the US at controlling the virus are going to look like Ron DeSantis bragging about how Florida responded better New York.

Spain has gone from averaging 300 cases/day a month ago to 2000 cases/day, and it looks like its second wave has just started growing.  Belgium, which already had the highest death rate in the world, has grown from 100 cases/day to 600 in the same time frame.  Even Germany has seen their cases double in the past two weeks.

Lockdowns do not prevent the spread of the virus, they just delay it.

He is taking this crisis so seriously now! Those press conferences sure are doing the trick!

By Trump's logic, if there were fewer pregnancy tests, there would be fewer pregnancies.

Florida is such a nightmare right now, and it's obviously about to get much worse. When will it be enough? Is there any point at which DeSantis develops a conscience and do another lockdown (it is so clearly needed)?

I can't even imagine the internal conversation that happens in someone's head when they see Fauci testify, read Trump's tweet, and determine that the former host of the Celebrity Apprentice is a more trustworthy authority on public health. The sheer brainsickness just blows my mind.

From the article linked in the tweet above:

Quote
Because he had been at a hearing on Tuesday with Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert, who tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, "out of precaution, Grijalva went into self-isolation on Wednesday until he got a test," Nolan said.

In a statement Saturday, Grijalva slammed Republicans who don't wear masks in the building, citing the events of the week.

"While I cannot blame anyone directly for this, this week has shown that there are some Members of Congress who fail to take this crisis seriously," he said. "Numerous Republican members routinely strut around the Capitol without a mask to selfishly make a political statement at the expense of their colleagues, staff, and their families."

It is embarrassing, and frustrating, that many of the leading figures in our own government haven't been taking this seriously. They have set a bad example for so many Americans to do the same. I fully agree with what Rep. Grijalva says here. And he's not the first member to criticize his colleagues for not wearing a mask. Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts did so in a speech on the House floor a few months ago.

Sure, and Florida could have said the exact same thing to New Jersey in May.

The problem in Spain isn’t even the total number of cases right now.  It is that after everyone had hailed them as a model response in contrast to the US, they’ve seen their cases double every week for the last three or four weeks.

I have said it before that DeSantis and the other southern governors had the privilege of seeing the mistakes made in New York/New Jersey and learn from them. Instead of that they tried to curry favor with Trump, ignored all warnings by the experts, and managed to make matters even worse.

Ok, but in that case Spain had the opportunity to see the mistake being made by all these places, including their own very drastic lockdown, and their cases are still doubling every week as of today.

It was inevitable for Spain and other tourism-dependent nations to experience a surge the moment they opened their borders (the same thing happens here too). The thing is that unlike DeSantis our governments are acknowledging the situation and in collaboration with the health experts are taking measures to contain the flare-ups.

The updated numbers for COVID-19 in the U.S. are in for 8/1 per: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

I'm keeping track of these updates daily and updating at the end of the day, whenever all states finish reporting for that day.

New - Substituting the Δ Change metric as of 7/13 on dates starting from 7/5:
ΔW Change: Comparisons of Weekly Day-to-day Growth or Decline of COVID-19 Spread/Deaths.
  • IE: Comparing the numbers to the same day of last week, are we flattening the curve enough?

Σ Increase: A day's contribution to overall percentage growth of COVID-19 cases/deaths.
  • IE: What's the overall change in the total?

Older Numbers (Hidden in spoiler mode to make the post more compact)

Trump retweeted this, and I don't know if it's to play to his narrative that Europe isn't doing better than us, or if he's praising this crowd.

It depends on what you mean by worse. In Florida, new cases peaked about two weeks ago and hospitalizations peaked about a week ago. I think we've got another week or two before they hit the peak in deaths though. They could still see some benefits from a lockdown now, but it would be a very strange and disproportionate response considering they didn't do one a month ago when it could have helped a lot more.

The new cases started going down as soon as they switched from the CDC to HHS. I'm not saying there's a conspiracy or anything but if people wanted to make one there's plenty of fodder.

Well, "the crowd" would - at least in part - be Trumpists in the U.S., because the whole anti-lockdown movement here is heavily intersecting with the anti-immigration folk and conspiracy theorists. Maybe Trump is trying to so: Nobody is wearing a mask and practices social distancing in Europe, so nobody should feel compelled to do so in America either. What he'd omit is that the participants in yesterday's Berlin protests are largely seen as fringe lunatics by the rest of our society (or at least the majority of it).

Then how come among people I know personally, it's always the more left-wing ones who are anti-lockdown?

I dunno. I don't know the people you know.

A possible explanation is that political phenomena often seem to exist in reverse in Europe as opposed to America. For instance, a prominent AfD politican was recently investigated by the police here for having defaced a Karl Marx statue in the wake of the BLM protests.

The anti-mask crusade is just another way to show their resentment towards the "elites".

I gotta admit, the elites don't have a great track record in this pandemic.

I doubt the twelve people you know in some commune in Hicktown, KY are exactly representative of the US population.

I gotta admit, the average American has an unrealistic expectation of how science and epidemiology works.
Unless you are referring to the president/GOP governors and not scientists, you really are being ridiculous.
