Brian Sandoval was pro-choice, pro-LGBT, pro-Obamacare, pro-immigrant, pro-green-energy.  During his term he was viewed more favorably by Democrats than Republicans.  His national career began with Harry Reid endorsing him for the judiciary.

Why was he a Republican in the first place?  Was it because Rory Reid had the 2010 Dem primary locked down?  I'm not that familiar with Nevada politics, maybe I am underestimating Sandoval's conservatism.  Was he organically a Republican or was it more of a local machine thing?

Because he wanted to be one, which is possibly the most underratedly important aspect in rating one's ideology on Atlas.  The fact that someone like Zel Miller WILLINGLY REMAINS a Democrat or that Charlie Baker WANTS to run as a Republican in a Democratic state says a lot more about their core ideologies than any PM score.

Arnold is pretty similar on most of these issues. I guess due to economic issues, where he was leaning more towards the right? Certainly people like him regard their party more of a vehicle instead of a master (using John Kasich's words).

I wish Obama would have nominated him to the Supreme Court in 2016. Likely wouldn't have been confirmed by Cocaine Mitch, but Sandoval may have been better than Merrick Garland.

He vetoed a lot of minimum wage bills,  including raising it to $12.00 an hour.

Also he kind of did take a "tough on crime" approach overall.

Obamacare is a Heritage Foundation plan first enacted by Mitt Romney so supporting that is not strong evidence of being a progressive

I knew some very moderate republicans who were only republican because they believed the Republican Party believed more in the concept of individual success and 'hard work'. They had no ideological commitment o the Republican Party and switched heavily to Clinton and are now solidly democratic.

I think Merrick Garland was a huge mistake. Obama should have nominated the first African American woman judge.

Probably because he wanted to be President, and fundamentally misread the way the party was going post-Obama.

Why do some people born with certain genitals want to be part of the opposite sex?

He was part of the Bush W and John McCain compassionate conservative party before Boehner took over. He was Latino just like Grisham and Martinez were and had outreach to Dems in a Latino state. After 2010 with Boehner, the Rs lost the Sunbelt and started moving towards a Southern based party

Because not all moderates are Democrats, despite what moderate Democrats and conservative Republicans may want.

Maybe I've got a bit of a personal bias, but I'm kind of dumbfounded by the implication that the two scenarios are even remotely similar. Tongue

In addition he consistently vetoed voting rights bills.
