Maybe Zers will be more extreme version of Millennials as Xers are to Boomers?

Social security and healthcare likely play a large role in this:

That coupled with the fact that the boomers are less likely to be as socially conservative as the silents before them.

Gen X worshiped Reagan as a hero. Back in the 1980s the young actually leaned Republican, take a look at Michael J Fox's character on Family Ties, he was a young conservative Reaganite. The olds all were New Deal Greatest Generation who were terrified of Reagan slashing SS and Medicare. In the 1980s Gen X Yuppies were Republican leaning as well.

I remember reading that in the 80’s and early 90’s the typical dynamic was for the senior citizens that fought in WWII to be Democrats and the coming of age edgy Xers were leaning Republican.

My how things have changed.

Check out the 2008 exit polls by state (outside the South) and compare whites who were 50-64 at the time with those who were in their forties. The gap was sharp. Especially in the Midwest.

In addition to what others above said, women live longer and are more Democratic than men.

Late Boomers (born mid 50's-early 60's) and Early Gen X (born from mid 60's-early to mid '70's) are pretty Republican. They came of age in the late 1970's and the '80s. That I think is what drives it.

It seems incredibly likely. Gen Z is coming of age under Trump in the middle of an economic catastrophe. For most of us, every day is just another day - we have had some experience during the economic boom that will get us our next work, some have money saved - but for this cohort, they are losing their future by the minute much like older millennials before them in 2008 beginning years of underemployment and debt.

While I agree with most of the answers in this thread, I would add one other small factor. The 45-64 age group missed Watergate, the second most important moment in American political history, and the reason for the last 50 years of distrust in government and our institutions. Trump is so incredibly similar to Nixon (without the plus of being a lifelong statesman but I think that matters less today given the distrust). The 65+ age group lost their Kennedy's (something that could be understood even at their young age unlike Watergate for the next generation) and got stuck with Nixon getting off scot-free.

Speaking of Family Ties, I always loved the political takes of the show, but weren't the parents both baby boomers?

They were, but they were hippies.
