Kim Jong-il was quite an OC-esque character, not needing to go to the bathroom, getting by on one bowl of ride during the Arduous March, being a worldwife fashion icon and a film expert extraordinaire, just to name these few examples. However, he was also a bit of an authoritarian launching NUT rockets and never lived under the surface of Lake Michigan.

More importantly he was an awful narcissist that is the main reason for why North Korea is like it is.

Whoever the surgeon was that operated on him here really ought to be coming up with a plan to leave the country if they knew what was good for them.

SK will take any NK citizen in as a refugee and give them citizenship, seems like a good plan to me.

The problem is that they give these refugees very little support materially or socially to integrate into wider society, forcing most of them into poverty. Sad but true.

But seriously, it was kind of obvious that he was just healing from his surgery. He has the best doctors the North Korean people can toil for value for him to afford. It was obvious from the start that the sudden allegations were just the news media having a field day on reporting the situation in North Korea.

And this is why after seven pages, here is my first comment in this thread . The amount of fake news about North Korea is astronomical (much of it being about how this and that person was killed). Tabloids and "anonymous administration sources" can pretty much make up anything and the likes of NBC will take it seriously.

You’re talking about the most secretive regime in the world, one that routinely lies to its people and world governments. If there’s a problem with misinformation about North Korea, it has an easy solution: stop spreading misinformation itself and be honest with people.

That said, I was never convinced Kim was vegetative, but missing the Day of the Sun celebrations is a big ing deal no matter what. Given he was almost certainly chilling outside of Pyongyang, either he had covid or was worried about catching it. That’s very possible at this point.

What was clear was that he had a surgical procedure due to his poor health. A very simple answer to this question, one first formulated by South Korean intelligence, was that he was just out of the limelight due to the aftermath of his surgery. What makes the most sense then is that to avoid looking weak or in bad shape during the ceremony, he went to his villa to heal so as to ensure that his aura isn’t weakened in the eyes of the public.
