Wow, none in New England would count!  The one county in Maine (and New England) that voted for McCain went for Humphrey in 1968, Perot in 1992, and Clinton in 1996.

This applies to most of South Central Kentucky, which was strongly Unionist during the Civil War (thanks largely to the Confederate invasion of the area) and has remained staunchly Republican ever since. Pulaski County for instance, the largest county in the region, has only voted Democratic once since then: 1912, when obviously the split between Roosevelt and Taft was fatal to the GOP.

In any event, that's why if you look at maps of Kentucky elections over the years, even during elections when Democrats comfortably won the state there is a group of red counties in the south central part of it.

Tyler County, WV is debatable, its 1996 official result has Bill Clinton winning it, and not even with it being particularly close, but chances are that the official result is an error, and that Dole probably won it in actuality.

If Dole actually carried Tyler, WV (likely), when was the last time it didn't vote Republican?

Union County PA has voted Republican in all but one election (thanks a lot Teddy Roosevelt) since 1856. Neighboring Snyder County is pretty close, but voted for Buchanan in 1856.

Lebanon County, PA went for FDR in 36 and TR in 12 but otherwise has been consistently Republican.

Going by the criteria in my first post the Pennsylvania counties that would count would be several of the northern ones, Union, and Butler. I did not know that Snyder voted for Buchanan, thanks for the insight Orser.

For Indiana, going by criteria in the first post:
Steuben
LaGrange
Kosciusko
Wabash
Jasper
Newton
Benton
Warren
Randolph
Hamilton
Hendricks
Henry
Decatur
Jennings

(I excluded those that might have voted Dem if not for a third party).

Thoughts on these counties?

Lyndon Johnson, to my knowledge, is the only Democrat ever to win the counties you listed here. In his 1964 landslide, he won every county in New York, and is one of only three presidential candidates-Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge being the others-to do so. I know that in at least one of these counties (Wyoming), Trump got more than 70% of the vote in 2016, in a state that he lost by nearly 23%.

For North Carolina-
Wilkes
Yadkin

For Ohio-
Geauga
Fulton
Warren
Logan
Champaign
Union
Madison (Although 1876 is suspiciously close)
Fayette
Clinton
Greene
Morgan

Most of these counties, except for Fulton and Union, went for Johnson in 1964. I know that Roosevelt won Fulton County in 1932.

Right? And Putnam, NY went Dem in 1864, which I had not known!

Anyway, here is Wisconsin-
Walworth

Illinois-
Lee
Ogle
Stark
Edwards
Ford

Andrew Jackson won Edwards County in 1832, and Lee County, I believe, was carried by Franklin Pierce in 1852. Franklin D. Roosevelt won Ford County in 1932. Ogle County, to my knowledge, has never voted Democratic. Roosevelt is also the only Democrat to carry Stark County, which he did in 1932.

As for my state (Colorado), Democrats have won every county in at least one presidential election. Elbert County has not gone Democratic since 1932, and Washington and Hinsdale Counties have not done so since 1936; Franklin D. Roosevelt was the last Democrat to win these counties. They were the only three counties in Colorado that Lyndon Johnson did not carry in 1964.

Yes, by my criteria I include counties that voted Democrat only in 1912, 1932,36, and/or 64. (From 1856 to 2016).

Avery and Mitchell (according to wikipedia in 1876 Mitchell went for Tilden, while both have gone Republican every year since except when they went for TR in 1912) North Carolina as well.

I was about to add those two counties, but then I found out that Mitchell had voted Tilden in 1876. Avery was a part of Mitchell then, so I am unsure if we should add Avery to our list.

I'd say add Avery since it wasn't formed until 1911, so it hasn't voted for a Democrat since it was created as an entity.

Putnam County, MO has been consistently Republican since at least 1932. I'm not able to find county-level results from before then. Maybe someone here can?

Putnam County, MO has been consistently Republican since at least 1932. I'm not able to find county-level results from before then. Maybe someone here can? It's definitely the longest one-party streak of any Missouri county, but I have no idea of exactly how long it is.

Gasconade County, MO voted Republican in 1860 and has voted Republican in every election for President since (and has been GOP downballot in every election where I can find data).
