THE RETURN OF THE KING

[We Live in Black and White]

The year was 1960. A cold, early November evening, in an unassuming--uninteresting, one might even say--suburban town in New Jersey. Nothing important was to happen on that day in that town. Although, one might argue, an ocean full of unimportant drops of water can level a city in one wave, and a river full of banal droplets can, with enough time, carve the mountains we consider as majestic as time itself.

"I don't like either of them," says an unassuming--uninteresting, one might even say--suburban man in New Jersey.

"Oh that's silly, Walter," says Mildred, his wife of over 20 years. "Kennedy is perfectly fine." She is just as unassuming--uninteresting, one might even say--as him, although perhaps not as susceptible to flippant nihilism.

"You know what I'm gonna do?" He held a quarter in the air.

"Oh no, not that, Walter."

"Heads or tails?"

"For Kennedy?"

"Well you want me to vote for Kennedy, right?"

"Well yes, but at least--"

"Heads or tails?"

"Heads, I suppose, but--"

"And!" Walter dramatically flips it into the air, without much care for precision. "God damn it," he says as he reaches in vain for the coin on the floor.

"Voting is important, it shouldn't be left up to chance!"

"Now now...Mildred," Walter grunts as he gets up from his chair. "I...won't be...the deciding vote. You said heads, right?"

"Yes. Walter, what if everyone left their vote up to chance? What then?"

"Don't be...silly," Walter was bending over. "Ahh!"

"Are you okay?"

"Yes Mildred...I'm okay." He looked at the coin. "Tails. Guess I'm voting for Eisenhower's VP!"
