It's basically good enough for day to day interactions. I can watch a movie, read a newspaper, go to a doctor's appointment, deal with anything I need to deal with in German - but I wouldn't say it's fluent by any means. I won't be producing any academic texts in German any time soon, and I still make loads of grammatical errors when speaking or writing - and it was recently brought to my attention that I have a fairly pronounced French accent. But given that a year ago I could barely even order a beer in German I would say I'm pretty happy with my progress.

Between 2 and 3. I would say proficient/semi-fluent,
/upper-intermediate (if that makes sense).

Studied for 12 years, regularly use it in social life and at work, can watch videos and listen to conversations without necessarily understanding everything but understand the vast majority and get the point, i still sometimes have to ask people to speak a bit slower or not use very complex structures.

The difficulty of German for me is the complex sentence structure. I find Italian and Swedish much easier to learn and understand because of this. I still have a lot of issues with der, die, und das in German, but it doesn't impede understanding the same way the sentence structure does. But goal is definitely to become fluent within the next decade, and have also strongly considered Germany as a Plan B if Sweden doesn't work out or if the opportunity arises (people are much nicer, the weather is better, and the beer cheaper in Deutschland Wink )

I studied German back in high school and I got to quite a high level in fact. Allegedly by the time I finished high school I had a C1 level of German but that is most definitely not true (I also have a C1 level of English and even at the time my English was a million times better than my German)

In any case, because I have never practiced German since I left high school, my German proficiency has dropped like a rock. I imagine I must be somewhere around B1 levels if not lower.

So basic vacation German, enough to talk with a cashier or something, but if I ever moved to Germany or something I would have to re-learn the language.

Technically I'm Anglo-Catholic.  But the Reformation was going to happen whether a G*rman was responsible or not.

I apologize if I caused any offense; the combo of NC, religious, and just...everything else I know about you gave me the impression you were a Baptist.

Yeah I think the few spelling mistakes were
Velt was me spelling it the way it was pronounced (usually I do not misspell that word that way), which is not a good idea. Otherwise the Capital of Austria would start with the same sound as English words like wait and waste. W in German is (usually?) a V.
Mond was I guess a case of a straight-up misremembering of recently acquired info, so I switched out an O with a U.
Fur is covered by the umlaut exemption.
Also, isn't Norden and Suden more analagous to "northern" and "southern", with Sud and Nord used for generic compass points?

No, but the chances of me becoming a Baptist are roughly the same of me becoming a Roman Catholic: zero.

It is pronounced „Veen“ or „Weene“. But in western Austria, „Wean“ (wea-uhn).

Norden & Süden = North & South (to indicate a broader region)
Nördlich & Südlich = Northern & Southern (direction)
Nord & Süd = mostly used in geographical context such as Nordkalifornien (Northern California) to combine a region or state or ocean.

My mother's side is basically all Roman Catholic except for my atheist cousins.  My dad's side (whom I no longer communicate with for... reasons) are very WASP-y mainline Protestants.

Between options 2 and 3. I took four years of German and understand it decently well. But I just do not have a tongue for speaking foreign language in the moment. So I am not what you would call a fluent speaker.

If you have any questions about German, don’t hesitate to ask me.

I have enough time today.

Question:  what advantage do you think learning German would have for your average English-speaking American?
