AG Robert Jackson, who was later appointed to SCOTUS and attorney in Nuremberg trials, was considered a potential candidate in case FDR didn't run. How would he have done if FDR declined a 3rd term and ran against Willkie?

Jackson hadn't been AG for very long, had he? He was smart & ambitious but not really well known to the public, so that probably wouldn't bode well for him.

Willkie hadn't been a Republican for very long, had he? He was smart & ambitious but not really well known to the public, so that probably wouldn't bode well for him.

"Wow, these aren't at all equivalent (the public already knew who Willkie was & he was well-liked), but f**k it, I'm gonna be undeservedly snarky anyway!"

I think FDR is the only Democrat who could have beaten Willkie, but Robert Jackson is a better candidate than John Nance Garner would have been.

✓ Businessman Wendell Willkie (R-NY)/Senator Charles L. McNary (R-OR): 333 EV. (51.23%)
Attorney General Robert H. Jackson (D-PA)/Senator Alben W. Barkley (D-KY): 198 EV. (46.41%)
