The most recent picture I watched was Good Night and Good Luck, which was excellent one of last year's best, I'd say. On TV I recently watched Room With a View (girlfriend's initiative). None of us thought it to be all that good though.

Brokeback Mountain's scene is not all that graphic. I was a little shocked but it's like a 5 second scene in a 2 hour movie. It says nothing about the film as a whole. I found it to be a little overrated but still very good. Top 5 of last year, most certainly.

And I'm glad to see that some other people here seem to enjoy quality films, as opposed to the usual thrash... Wink

March of the Penguins was G-rated pablum that belongs on TV

You have no appreciation for art. Sad

I agree. The Swedish voice over wasn't very good, unfortunately, but as a movie it was great. Stunning.

Stunning? It was a documentary on penguins. It should have been aired on Discovery or National Geographic.

You're aware that documentaries get aired on cinemas regularly? It's better than a lot of other crap movies. Tongue

"chungking express" by kar-wai wong.

what a brilliant movie, with great characters.
Oh yes.
Although I loved Fallen Angels even better.

Have any of you seen 2046 or "In the Mood for Love" and if so how did these four compare to each other?

Citizen Kane

What can I say? An absolute classic.

Agreed, watched it the other day.

Last film at moment was The Godfather, good but I wouldn't put it in my top ten I reckon.

Been a while since I saw it, but Citizen Kane still stands out as a classic. Smiley

I trust you both know that it is based on Hearst quite a lot

V for Vendetta. Easily the best movie, so far, of 2006.

Eh? Saw that recently, but definitely not true.

And James, live there? That's a scary thing to consider...

I'd like to see Little Miss Sunshine, but it won't come to Sweden in a long time I suspect... Tongue

Hearst Castle is a crazy crazy place. I think I could do nutcase media baron who runs the world from his palatial house on a hill in California rather well thank you very much Tongue.

If you're aiming for Hearst/Kane, be my guest... Wink

Weeeell, it conflicts with my ambition to be a failed novelist....

Kane was a failed journalist, so there are similarities.

I just saw Accepted 3 days ago, I liked it.

I also just rented Capote, I thought it was really good.

I recommend both movies.

Capote was a movie I really liked. Hoffman was really, really good in it, I thought. When you've seen him in a beard the contrast is very striking.

Cars *embarassed* (with my girl-friend's younger siblings). It was ok for a children's movie, but very, very klichéed.

Really? Everyone I've spoken to who's seen it says it's really good. I mean, sure it's a clichéd, but virtually all commercial movies are. I generally like Pixar.

Well, I think I like Pixar too, though I can't keep count of different animated movies...sure, most commercial movies are fairly predictable, but this was a tad too much in that department. I felt like I had seen it a 100 times before. Granted, I had to see the dubbed version and that probably detracted from the experience.

I saw Borat - offensive yet hilarious. You must see this movie.

Did you interpret it as a movie about what is wrong with America (because that is what Swedish critics have done...I suspect they're being idiots...)

The Seventh Seal, in Swedish with English subtitles.

Oh, what did you think? (kudos for not watching a dubbed version!) I watched it a couple of years back, I found it pretty cool. Though I think one almost has to be Swedish to appreciate the dialouge, "Jag är döden" ("I am death") is a classic line that just doesn't work quite as well in English.

Little Miss Sunshine. Yeah, it's finally showing here. (FYI - it got an "ages 6 & up" rating here. Tongue )

The Seventh Seal, in Swedish with English subtitles.

THey weren't showing a dubbed version.

Infernal Affairs

F***ing awesome. Now for the prequel.
Watching the remake is filed under "things I'll do with my mom this Christmas".

Done that. Pretty good. Damn long.

And yesterday, I saw Babel. Also very good.

I didn't like Babel too much. My girlfriend hates it with a ferocity that sometimes scare me...I have trouble makin my mind up about it, to be honest.

Dreamgirls, Blood Diamond, and Apocalypto.

Jake has good taste.

I've seen better. Wink

But I've seen worse a lot more often, so not bad.

Has anyone seen Paris Je T'aime? I saw that yesterday. I really liked it, even though the concept doesn't allow too much depth.

No, actually, it's spelled "happyness" in the title.  It's a reference to the daycare the main character sends his son to in the movie.  To illustrate how poor the neighborhood is, the word "happiness" in their version of the Declaration of Independence was misspelled, but no one wants to bother to get it fixed.

The movie is based on a true story, in which this actually was the case.

Are you sure he didn't mean the film 'Happiness'?  That was a great movie - I'll never forget the part where Philip Seymour Hoffman comes on the wall.

"We're not laughing AT you, we're laughing WITH you!"

"...but I'm not laughing..."

Last two films I saw where 'Bobby' and 'Rocky Balboa'

Quelle Horror! Je n'aime pas boxing movies. (If you don't speak French I apologize in advance Wink)

I saw the Hours recently. Pretty good, I liked the mood of it.

I cried during that one, I saw it 4 years ago in the theatre but haven't seen it again because it was so upsetting. One of the best films of the decade though.

Yes, it was very moving. Which is in a way surprising, given how removed the characters are from oneself (or at least from me Wink)

I agree it was excellent, though some say it's pretentious I didn't really think of it as that. And I did get sort of inspired to read Mrs. Dalloway too. It's always nice to see an example of how one should make a biopic.

Videodrome

I watched it at 2 in the morning, and... what a mindfuck it was. Long live the new flesh!

oh, and the Criterion Collection DVD (which I happen to own Wink) is superb. Incredible packaging, great transfer, and a mountain of extras. Criterions don't come cheap, but they're worth it.

True Classic it truly is. Death to videodrome, Long live the new flesh! Smiley

Seen A history of Violence?

I have, but I didn't really like it. I found it to be one of the most overrated films of that year. It didn't really get to me in any way.

Well, I haven't seen any Cronenberg apart from that. I kind of got the impression that HoV got its reviews mainly from his name, the sort of "it's Cronenberg, so there has to be a really deep message somewhere in there" thing that can happen with movies occassionally (not restricted to him, of course).

The Queen. Not as good as I expected, somewhat bad in the end. But it got better as it went along. I felt the guy playing Tony Blair was a little lacking. He didn't really strike me as convincing.

Annie Hall - that movie really gets better every time I watch it. But should I be worried by the fact that I can identify with Woody Allen's character?

Yes. It's a very, very bad sign! Cheesy

Its baby boomer nostalgia that makes the "classics' have such a high prominence. Once that group starys dying off....

You are such an idiot.

The 70s were more psychedelic, maybe? Tongue

The truth is probably just that better movies aren't cliches. So there were probably tons of movies in the 70s that were exactly like most movies done today, but guess what, they didn't survive. Because no one wants to watch those sort of movies in retrospect.
