The Road

Brilliant. I guess a lot of critics couldn't handle the fact that the end of the world would be, you know, pretty depressing.

Critics often shirk away from visions of a hellish future that are genuinely depressing.

The Social Network. I thought it was good, but I refuse to believe that all people who make money on the internet are socially retarded.

True Grit, which was above average. I liked the banter and the simplicity, but it wasn't quite the Coen brothers flick I was expecting.

The American

Can a film be fascinating and boring at the same time? Tongue

Seriously, a little bit of patience is required but the payoff is quite good. We need more movies like this filtering into the mainstream American consciousness. It also didn't hurt that there were quite a few beautiful women in it.

At least it makes you want to visit Italy. I wonder if Phil would like it.

The Deer Hunter

First time watching this in its entirety. Too long but mostly very good. The first Russian Roulette scene is certainly a strong contender for most intense scene in cinema history.

This is England - very good, but I would have appreciated it more if I could understand what the characters were saying Tongue

Red - basically agree with BRTD

The Butterfly Effect - it lacked the atmosphere of Donnie Darko (although the scene where they all go see Se7en at the theater was a nice touch), but I was certainly engrossed by it. Don't really understand the low RT score

Spooky. My most recent film as well (was my most recent when you posted this too).

And I more or less agree with you. (I also agree with what you said on Youth in Revolt).

Really, really racist though. Not that many Vietnam War films aren't, of course.

Right. I'm not hugely bothered by that particular sort of racism though, to be honest.

I'm pretty sure racism was a big factor in the Vietnam War, as it is in all conflicts where different civilizations clash. The RR scenes are controversial though because apparently there are no official reports of anything like that happening during the war.

Interesting but clearly a little overrated.

I thought the story was great, but they could have really brought it to life with some better visuals.  Michel Gondry movies tend to have that problem.  I think he's self conscious about his indie street cred.

Speaking of Charlie Kaufman movies that could've been a whole lot better, I watched Synedoche, New York.  10% of the scenes were great while 90% was pointless filler.  Hmm... holy sh**t, I just got it.  Touche, Charlie, touche.

Yeah, I read that as well. What I meant was more that when you describe a war from the perspective of a personal story of a participant and he only meets a few enemies and those enemies are evil...it just doesn't bother me to the extent that it perhaps should. As long as it isn't the focus of the story and so on.

I went to this really weird bar in Chicago last night and they were showing Flash Gordon (while playing music such as Silverchair, Nirvana, Silversun Pickups, and Puddle of Mudd). I was pretty drunk at the time, but I found it to be hilarious (and Timothy Dalton is in it!). Also makes you appreciate how good a job ILM did on The Empire Strikes Back, which was released the same year.

The movie already has an original soundtrack by Queen... what do you need the other bands for? Wink (Official music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfmrHTdXgK4)

Freedom movie btw.

True Grit.  It's always hard to tell with child actors, but I think Hailee Steinfeld has a bright future.

The minister's speech was one of the 10% though, right?

Children of Men

Awesome. Some of the best camera work I've ever seen in a film, for sure.

Something tells me CARLHAYDEN would just LOVE Britain's policies in that film.
