Batman: Mask of the Phantasm - The best of the movies in the series, and, up until TDK, the greatest single film length adaptation of Batman.

Yeah, it's rare when a high-budgeted movie lives up to its original hype.

Like everyone else in America, The Dark Knight.  I know what Constine and the rest of you all were getting excited about, it was very good.  On my scale from 1-10, it gets an 8.8.

Indeed; I was stunned that TDK actually exceeded my expectations, which were already very high.  But MoP is an extremely good movie, as is SubZero, with Mr. Freeze.

Don's Party (1976)

One of the best Australian films I have seen to date. Although I really enjoyed the film, thanks to Graham Kennedy's performance of Mack, I believe that the original 1971 play would be better than the film, as Don's actual party didn't work for me whilst watching the film.

Clubland (2007)

I didn't know what to expect when I sat down to watch this film this afternoon. However what opinions I had of the film prior to my viewing of it changed. I thought it was an engaging story, filled with both humour and sadness. Brenda Blethyn was brilliant, likewise Richard Wilson playing the mentally handicapped Mark.

WALL-E

I rarely go to the movies (Why blow $15 when you can rent a DVD at Safeway for $1?), but I'll always go to watch the Pixar movies. AEach one seems to upstage the last, and this one was no different.

Right from the start, it was different. I thought this was because of the lack of dialogue, but later I realized it was something more. The contrast between Ratatouille and WALL-E its immediate successor, is amazing. While the former was an upbeat movie with an unabashedly happy ending, this was much darker. It conveyed a level of despair I haven't seen in any Pixar movie since the original, Toy Story. And it was by far the darkest.

The interesting thing about it is that it manages to be dark without much of a villanous presence. Toy Story had Sid, A Bug's Life had Hopper, Toy Story 2 had Al, Monsters, Inc. had Randall, The Incredibles had Syndrome, and Ratatouille had Skinner. Before this movie, the only two films without an important villain were Finding Nemo and Cars, neither of which were on the same level emotionally. Here, the sole villain who stays villainous through the whole film is the Autopilot, which is on screen for no more than ten minutes.

The end was somewhat more ambiguous than the earlier films as well. The captain's statments at the end seem to indicate that he would be profoundly disappointed by the reality of life on Earth (though the credits indicate that they did, in fact, prosper). The rebirth of WALL-E, and the ensuing loss of memory, was a powerful scene. It would have been a better movie had he not remembered, but it is, after all, a children's movie.

And there was, of course, the message. A message vcan be denied for The Incredibles; it canopt for this one. It was An Inconvenient Truth for children, in a way. The criticism from right-wing sources verifies that for me. Corporatism is, and always has been, a very bad thing.

As often happens, the sum of all this was greater than its parts. I was left thinking, profoundly thinking. A testament to that is the fact that I was inspired to write this post, which took 25 minutes. In sum, an excellent movie, quite possibly the best. I strongly recommend it, especially for you anarcho-capitalists out there.

They did last time I checked. They're probably more. I never go to the movies unless somebody takes me (which happens not infrequently).

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Words are superfluous when it comes to describing this cinematic masterpiece.

And I thought DC's movie prices were a ripoff.

Anyway, I agree it is a good movie.  And I was proud of myself for identifying the Hello, Dolly! soundtrack from the opening seconds of the movie (the second I heard the phrase, "Somewhere outside this hick town, Barnaby, there's a slick town, Barnaby").  I'm glad that Hollywood is willing to keep referring to the works of a much better cinematic era.  What I wouldn't give to see a new old-fashioned movie musical with old-fashioned music.  Not Mamma Mia.

THE MACHINIST

A solid psychological thriller. Christian Bale really put his all into the role, dropping his weight down to 120 pounds. I can't believe the training that he must have went through after this film to get to 200 pounds for BATMAN BEGINS.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis, easily one of the top French movies in recent years. Ch'est parti biloute!

I read somewhere that it made more money in France than any film since Titanic.
