'Australia'.  That is some good ole' fashioned Hollywood in the Australian outback in the early years of the Second World War, a Manichean throwback to the days when we had only the good guys and one-dimensional bad guys.

Michael Clayton.

Meh, it was simply "good". Tilda Swinton won an Oscar for that? She was just competent. Same with Clooney, he did a good job but hardly nomination worthy. It really chugged and was interesting for the first half, but couldn't keep up the momentum.

The Tracey Fragments.

Seemed to me like the type of thing that would play on MTV in the mid-90s, back when they actually played stuff worth watching. Tracey didn't remind me of Juno much, but it did seem like the type of movie Juno would like, if that makes sense.

Milk

It was pretty good. Josh Brolin was especially good.

I thought Emile Hirsch had the best performance as no one else would've played that role exactly the same way.

Slumdog Millionaire

Really good.  The direction is the high point.  Here's hoping Boyle gets more accolades as award season goes on.  All the child actors were pretty excellent as well.  Hooray!

And Milk was indeed really good.  don't remember if i posted about it.

Retarded Christmas movie. I was awfully bored. We watched OSS 117 in French, but that's a good movie.

Best part:
Diana Christensen: Hi. I'm Diana Christensen, a racist lackey of the imperialist ruling circles.
Laureen Hobbs: I'm Laureen Hobbs, a badass commie n.
Diana Christensen: Sounds like the basis of a firm friendship.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe

Yeah it was really just a longer version of an episode of the TV show, but not a horrible one.

Fantastic. Why can't there be more films like this?

Gonzo.

Documentary on the life and times of Hunter S. Thompson, who strangely enough I quoted in my previous post. Too preachy and counterculture nostalgic for my liking (it constantly infers references between Iraq and Vietnam and one of the talking heads claims that HST would have been a leading writer talking about the crisis of today. Viz. Bush, etc. Totally untrue, he was utterly washed up. The problem with gonzo is you need to be an interesting person as a person, HST just took loads of drugs but in ways wasn't a hugely fascinating personality.) and focuses too much on politics. Some of the talking heads, including Pat Buchanan, were interesting. Entertaining film, though with HST's life it would be epic fail not to be entertaining and did show him as the self-indulgent bum that he became. Also good archive footage, especially from the Hell's Angels - who 40 years on now look incredibly camp if anything. But in the end just too nostalgic and I felt like I heard this story of the 60s and 70s all so many times before.

Requiem for a Dream.

My reaction was far different from everyone else's, I just liked the trippy, indie style of shooting. Made it more enjoyable than anyone here seemed to have thought. Just why the fuck was one of the Wayans brothers in a movie like that? Seriously, keep those douches out of anything good.

Frost/Nixon

Much better than I expected. Both Sheen and Langella were superb in their respective roles.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE

A film that I appreciate and like more and more every time I watch it. It's really underrated and doesn't deserve some of the flack that it gets. I think in a couple years it will be appreciated, similar to what happened to ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. For me, it's easily becoming a top ten entry in the 007 series.

Slumdog Millionaire

A very interesting story though it had way too much of a Hollywood storybook ending.

It was ok, better than I thought it would be. Had some nice funny parts in it, ending wasn't good though.

Which do you think was better, Casino or Quantum?

CASINO ROYALE is, in my opinion, the ultimate 007 film so I prefer that but QUANTUM is quickly getting up there. If CASINO is a 9.5/10 for me, QUANTUM is an 8/10 (up from a 7/10 when I first saw it). That being said, there are several things I prefer about the latter film opposed to the former.

Not yet. We'll see what happens after a few years.

As I said earlier, I think that Bond fans will begin to embrace QUANTUM as they embraced ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE years after it's release.

I'd like to see it again.  I think I was expecting something else, so I missed a lot.  I liked it when I saw it though.  Both are among my favorites.  Not to barrage you with questions, but do you think Quantum was just a bridge to the next film?  If so, would that change your opinion of it and the new direction of the Bond series?

I don't think QUANTUM was as much of a bridge as much as it was an epilogue to CASINO ROYALE. The producers have pretty much said that the Vesper arc is complete for Bond but that the Quantum organization (and Mr. White probably) will return in the next film.

In my opinion, the best direction that the series could go would be to make a hybrid of the two films and move on from there. The thing that I liked the most about QUANTUM was it's style; it actually felt like the locations while CASINO ROYALE's locations felt like a set. I also preferred QUANTUM's dialogue.

I think that what shocked most people about QUANTUM is how down to earth it was. I mean, CASINO was pretty serious but it still had those over the top elements. Besides the plane chase, QUANTUM was pretty grounded. I don't think people disliked it as much as they just didn't expect what they got.

In the end, I like the direction that the series is taking, as long the producers recognize what has worked and what hasn't from the last two films and work from there. Despite this, I think the best step for the series would be to have the next film be more of the traditional, by the numbers Bond film and then return to the more down to earth style for the film after that (which would probably be Craig's last or the next Bond's first).
