Feb 12, 2029: Michelle Friedland confirmed to the Supreme Court

Wikimedia Commons

Today, Michelle Friedland was confirmed to the Supreme Court by the Senate, by a vote of 52-48. Republican led by then Senate Majority Leader John Thune, chose to not give Friedland a hearing because it was too close to the general election. Democrats took back a Senate majority and started a hearing in early January, that took just over a month. All of the 50, senate Democrats voted to confirm her. 2 Republicans, liberal Republican Senator Phil Scott (R-VT), and moderate Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) joined Democrats and voted in favor of her domination. Friedland currently is the second Jewish person on the court, along with Kagan. Friedland is the fourth women, along with Democrats: Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson. This nomination has given liberals a 5-4 majority, for the first time in decades. Friedland is considered much more moderate then the other liberal justices on the court. She originally was nominated because the Senate was held by the Republicans with a narrow majority. After the 2028 General Election, Democrats took back the Senate with a net gain of one seat. Friedland officially has replaced the late Justice Thomas on the court, after his death over a year ago in December of 2027.

Supreme Court Composition:
Chief Justice John Roberts (Conservative)
Justice Samuel Alito (Conservative)
Justice Sonia Sotomayor (Liberal)
Justice Elena Kagan (Liberal)
Justice Neil Gorsuch (Conservative)
Justice Brett Kavanaugh (Conservative)
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson (Liberal)
Justice Sri Srinivasan (Liberal)
Justice Michelle Friedland (Liberal)

Epilogue

Over the next four years, President Harris remained fairly popular among the American people. The Republican party continued to make strides among minority voters and people of color, notably among Hispanic and Latino voters around the country. Harris had a few small scandals but nothing major. During the 2030 midterms, Republicans flipped the Senate back in their control, after it fell to Democrats in 2028. The Republicans gained 3 seats in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Montana, while Democrats picked up Phil Scott's seat in Vermont, who declined to run for a second full term. Republicans also expanded their narrow majority, gaining 34 seats in the House. Republicans used a similar tactic, that they used towards President Obama 16 years earlier after the 2014 Midterms. They blocked every court pick and action attempted by President Harris in the final two years of her Presidency.

The 2032 Primaries kicked off and there were many viable candidates on both sides. Notable Republicans in the race were Florida Governor and 2028 Vice Presidential Nominee Jeanette Nunez (R-FL), Texas Senator Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-NC),  Oklahoma Representative Stephanie Bice (R-OK), and former New York Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY). Nunez quickly became the frontrunner in the race and won her party's nomination easily. The two frontrunners on the Democratic side, were Vice President Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) representing the more moderate wing of the party and New York Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) representing the progressive wing. Former Georgia Governor Stacey Abrams (D-GA), Maine Senator Jared Golden (D-ME), former Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D-PA), and California Senator Katie Porter (D-CA) were also viable candidates in the race. After, a long primary fight, AOC became the nominee for President, as the most progressive candidate in American history.

AOC, along with Nunez are the first Latina nominees in their respective parties, in the same election year. The 2032 debates were very contentious between the two nominees. The 2032 Election was very close, but for the first time in 12 years, Republicans regain control of the White House. Republicans gained two more seats in the senate and 8 in the House of Representatives. Going into 2033, Republicans held 55 seats in the Senate, with Democrats at 45. This is the largest amount of seats that the Republicans have held in the Senate since 2004. The House majority for the Republicans is even more more dramatic, with Republicans at 253 seats, and Democrats at 182 seats. This election was a major blow to the Democratic party, who have held a majority in one sector of government since 2018.

The United States continued to decline as a World Power as the next decade went on. Over time, the Republican party continued to gain among minority groups, now a majority in the United States. However, the Democrats continued to do well in elections and pushed through their progressive policy agenda.

WOW Madison Cawthorn as VP - that's a funny way to end.

This was an awesome read! My only question is why you had NH trend so much to the right in this TL? Yes, it's a very white state - but culturally, it looks more like the rest of New England than heavily white red states elsewhere in the country (e.g., highly educated). Despite some nonsense at the down ballot level this year, it's pretty clear from election results and consensus that the state has trended D, and that should only continue as population dynamics in the state shift toward suburban/urban areas.

Anyway just wondering. Thanks for writing!

Thanks for the question and the kind words! New Hampshire is still a swing state in this timeline but I think in 12 years, it will became a tilt to lean Republican state. It will still be a swing state, that will go back and forth there.

This was one of my favourite TL’s and so far for the most part seems very realistic, a few questions about the epilogue,

-how old was Biden when he died?

-did yang ever become potus

-what becomes of Trumpism in the future

-are the Obama Girls in politics?

Good questions.

Biden was about 90 years old when he died.

No, Yang never becomes Potus.

Trumpism continues but because less violent and brutal (I don't think that will actually happen in our TL)

Obama's girls never enter politics.

Nov. 10, 2020: President Trump finally concedes

Wikimedia Commons

In a press conference a week after his defeat on Tuesday, November 10th, Trump conceded to President-Elect Biden and declares himself as one of the best president's in America's history. He thanks his Vice President, Mike Pence and everyone else in his cabinet. In his speech, Trump says "On January 20th, 2021, Joe Biden will become President and I will make this transition very swift and easy for everyone involved."

Oh how that aged well....

I could actually see a lot of this happening in a few years time.
Update: with the exception for a few obvious things this wasn’t too far off…

Sep. 10, 2022: Deficit exceeds 1.5 trillion

Economists predict that the debt will reach 30 trillion dollars by 2030. The Biden administration has spent more money than expected. The deficit has exceeded 1.5 trillion this year already because of the 2020 coronavirus stimulus package. The Biden administration says that they will raise taxes on earners over 250k. Moderated and conservatives are very angry about this. The freedom caucus led by Congressman Jordon are calling for cuts to social security and Medicaid. Conservative economists are worried about rising inflation.

Biden's approval rating is dropping among Americans, including Independents.

Nov. 1, 2022: Biden's Approval

Approve: 50%
Disapprove: 46%

Sadly this could be true

I doubt Lisa Murkowski would vote to confirm any Biden SCOTUS appointments. Remember that she opposed all of Obamas SCOTUS appointments too.
