Dec. 12, 2027: Justice Clarence Thomas dead at age 79

Wikimedia Commons

Breaking News. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is dead at age 79, sources tell CNN and Fox News. Sources say that Thomas died of heart failure but that is not confirmed. Thomas served as a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for less than a year, and then was appointed to the Supreme Court by then President George H.W. Bush. Thomas at the time was not a controversial pick, although he was very conservative, it did seem like the confirmation process was going well, and then Thomas would be approved, under a Democratic-controlled Senate. Then abruptly, accusations came out from professor Anita Hill, accusing Thomas of sexual harassment. She accused Thomas of some really incendiary accusations, which would have disqualified him. Thomas denied the allegations and accused the Democrats of a "modern political lynching." In the end, Thomas was confirmed in a close 52 to 48 vote, with many top Democrats including Judiciary Committee Chair and Future President, Joe Biden. Thomas would go on to serve for 36 years, the longest tenure in supreme court history to date. Thomas was viewed as an originalist conservative judge. Thomas' funeral will take place in a few days and no former President's will be in attendance. Many are wondering why George W. Bush will not be in attendance and if he is in poor health. Harris has announced that she will replace Justice Thomas and will put forward a nominee in the coming days.

Dec. 19, 2027: Harris nominates Michelle Friedland to the Supreme Court to replace Thomas

Wikimedia Commons

President Kamala Harris has nominated Michelle Friedland to the Supreme Court of the United States, to replace the late Justice Clarence Thomas. Friedland was a law clerk for the first woman on the Supreme Court, Sandra D'Connor. Friedland was appointed by then President Obama to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2014 and has served since then. Friedland, if confirmed would be the sixth women to serve on the court, and the ninth Jewish American on the Supreme Court. Friedland would require 50 votes in the Senate, with Vice President Buttigieg breaking a tie if necessary. Conservative senators Tom Cotton (R-AR) and Rand Paul (R-KY), both in statements said that President Harris can not replace Thomas, given they are in an election year. It is unclear if a vote will take place at this time as Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has not spoken yet on the confirmation process.

Dec: 20, 2027: Thune to enforce "Biden" rule.

Wikimedia Commons

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) just spoke on the Senate Floor and declared that no vote will take place on the nomination of Harris' nominee Judge Michelle Friedland. Thune cited the "Biden" rule, which means that they do not have to confirm a judge in an election year. This is almost identical to when in 2016, Mitch McConnell refused to take on Obama's nominee, moderate Garland, which outraged Democrats and even some Republicans. Most of the Republican caucus supports this move by Thune. Thune does have the power to block any nomination given his duties as Senate Majority Leader. Many expect that if a vote did take place, Harris' nominee would pass even though Democrats are in the minority, given Vermont Senator Phil Scott (R-VT), and that he would support the nomination, along with other moderate Republicans. A few Republicans including the previously mentioned Scott (R-VT), Romney (R-UT), and Murkowski (R-AK) have all stated publicly that they disagree with Thune and believe that a vote should take place. Scott spoke further and has threatened behind close doors, to leave Republican party and become an independent, and possibly caucus with the Democrats. This is very similar to what fellow Vermont Republican Jim Jeffords did in 2001. It is also important to mention that Murkowski is retiring in 2028, after 4 terms in the Senate. Harris spoke today and showed her anger at the Republican leadership. Harris stated, I'm very saddened to see the decision by the Republicans in the Senate's recent move to block the nomination of Friedland. This is ridiculous and is similar to what Mitch McConnell did to Garland and President Obama in 2016. We need to win this upcoming election in November, and flip both the Senate and House of Representatives, back in control of the Democrats."

Feb. 29, 2028: Massie drops out of Republican Primary

Wikimedia Commons

Thomas Massie, the Senior Senator from Kentucky, has announced that he has dropped out of the Republican Primary. Massie is an upcoming figure in the Republican Party, especially among those with libertarian views, which he was attacked for on many occasions in the debates. Massie had poor showings in all four of the first primary results, as did both Senator Crenshaw (R-TX) and Representative Gaetz (R-FL). Crenshaw and Gaetz both did not drop out of the race, because there respective states' primaries are coming up soon. Both Texas and Florida have a ton of delegates that contribute to the total number of delegates. Massie has not endorsed anybody in the primary yet.

Sen. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)

No one else really ran, similar to Obama in 2012. AOC considered a challenge but decided against it and is running for Senate in the Democratic primary, along with Letitia James.

That should be it for Nikki Haley. 200 Delegate-lead. I don't think anyone will come close to her and after Florida Ivanka is probably dropping out and endorsing.

Mar. 10, 2028: Gaetz drops out of Republican Primary

Wikimedia Commons

Matt Gaetz, the Representative from Florida's 1st District has announced that he will be dropping out of the Republican primary and also has not announced who he will be endorsing. Gaetz has served in the House since 2017, and has considered runs for Senate multiple times. Gaetz is very conservative, and is considered more of an outsider in his party. Many have speculated that he might endorse Tucker Carlson, another outsider and Fox News Host, but Gaetz has not endorsed another candidate yet. Gaetz dropped out a few weeks before Florida's primary on March 21st.[size]
