Nov. 19, 2024: Recounts in FL, FL-SEN, MT-SEN, TX-SEN, VT-SEN, WI

In six states, recounts were ordered either by the state or a candidate's request. All have come back in the last week. Here are the results.

In Florida, Vice President Kamala Harris won the state by less than 30,000 votes, or 0.4 percent of the vote. State law requires a recount if a candidate wins by less than 0.5 percent of the vote. The recount showed that Kamala Harris still won the election by 24,892 votes or 0.36 percent of the vote. Even without Florida, Harris would have still won the election. The Florida Senate Race was within the margin for a recount. Incumbent Republican Senator Rick Scott won by 0.4 percent of the vote, over Representative Stephanie Murphy. The recount took place which did narrow the margin. In the end, Scott won by 0.31 percent of the vote, or 21,992 votes.

In Montana, the Senate Race was within 0.5 percent, or about 2,000 votes. State law in Montana does not automatically initiate a recount within this margin. Law does not require a recount at all if it is more than 0.25 percent. Former Montana Attorney General Tim Fox asked for a recount and his request was granted. Montana Incumbent Democratic Senator voiced his annoyance about this as the margin was not within what state law allows. In the end, Tester still won the election by 0.53 percent, or 2,219 votes.

In Texas, the Senate Race was within 0.5 percent. Texas Incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz requested a recount in the state. Cruz is a well-known figure throughout the country, with his very conservative views and his runs for President in both 2016 and 2020. In 2018, Cruz beat his Democratic Challenger then Representative Beto O'Rourke by 2.6 percent. O'Rourke ran for President in both 2020 and 2024. O'Rourke then ran again for Senate in 2024 and won the Democratic primary by a convincing margin. O'Rourke than faced Cruz in the general election and won by 0.5 percent. The recount has come back and O'Rourke has won by 0.46 percent, or 44,291 votes.

In Vermont, the Senate Race was within 0.6 percent. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders suffered a second heart attack in 2021. Then he resigned and then Governor Phil Scott appointed an interim appointment. Governor Phil Scott then ran for Senate and won in the Special Election in December 2021. Scott won the Senate Race by 0.6 percent, or about 1,000 votes. The recount came back and Incumbent Liberal Republican Senator Phil Scott increased his margin and won by 0.79 percent, or 1,449 votes.

In Wisconsin, former Vice President Mike Pence won by 0.1 percent, or about 3,000 votes. The Democratic party in the state requested a recount. It was not required but it was accepted. The results narrowed even further when the results came back. Pence won by 0.04 percent or 1,402 votes. In did not matter as Harris won the election in close states including Arizona, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Former Vice President Mike Pence requested a recount in Pennsylvania. The request was denied as Harris won by more than 1 percent in the state. Harris won the election with 306 Electoral Votes. Pence finished 74 Electoral Votes behind Harris with 232 Electoral Votes. On January 20th, 2025, President-Elect Harris will be inaugurated as President and Vice President-Elect Buttigieg will be inaugurated as Vice President. Harris leads in the popular vote by about 3 points, or almost 4 million votes casts nationwide.

I expect a lot more Republican Women running for President in 2028. Although Nikki Haley came up short at the Convention making History to be the first Woman nominated by the Republican Party she IMO paved the way for others. Maybe she will run for Senate in 2026 against Joe Cunningham. She would probably a Shoe-In for that Seat.

In Florida I really hope Jeanette Nunez succeeds Ron DeSantis becoming the first Latina to occupy the FL Statehouse!

Nov. 20, 2024: Pence concedes to Harris

Wikimedia Commons

In a tweet, Pence conceded to Vice President Harris on her victory and congratulated her on her and Pete's victory. Pence called Harris and wished her well. Pence also declared that conservatism is very important and he is excited for the future of his party. A few Republicans including Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Ambassador Nikki Haley, and others have said that it is now time for the party to move on and work with the President Elect-Harris on key issues where they can find a middle ground. Pence has announced that he will not attend the inauguration in January, along with former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Dick Cheney. Former Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton have all said that they will be in attendance. The 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter died in early 2023, at 98 years old.

Dec. 12, 2024: Bernie Sanders dead at 83

Wikimedia Commons

Breaking News. Former Progressive Independent Senator Bernie Sanders has just died at 83 years old of natural causes. Senator Sanders served in the House of Representatives for 16 years or 8 terms from 1991 to 2007. Sanders then ran successfully for Senate in Vermont in 2006 and then resigned in August 2021 about a month after his second heart attack. Bernie was well known as one of the biggest voices of the progressive movement, along with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others. Bernie died of his third heart attack and has left his wife Jane Sanders, who is 74 years old. President Biden held a press conference and a ceremony remembering Bernie. Biden states, "my old friend, Bernie was a great man. Although we disagreed on many issues, he was always civil and stood up for what he believed. As a country, we need to honor Bernie and the work he has done." Many including Vice President Harris, former President Obama, and others tweeted about Bernie and called him a patriot and a great man. A funeral service is expected to take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, December 14th, 2024, where President Biden, former President Obama, and Representative Ocasio-Cortez are all expected to speak.

A split Congress. Sad to read about the news of Bernie but at least Pence conceded after initially requesting recounts in Florida again.

Jan. 20, 2025: Inauguration of Kamala Harris

Wikimedia Commons

Today, on January 20th, 2025, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. President Harris' speech was considered good by many. Harris' speech was not outstanding but her speech seemed fairly good to most.

"Hello, America! I stand here as your President. I am so excited to get to work. We need to build off the successes of the Biden administration and we need to work to make America a better place. We need to get more progressive legislation passed including climate change and other important issues that impact our communities, especially among minority groups. We need to work with our majority in the Senate to get work done.

I'm excited to get to work and make change. Thank you to every American who voted for me and others as well. I will be the President for all Americans and will advocate for you, the American people. Thank you everyone!"

So...

Katie Porter replaced Dianne Feinstein
Lisa Blunt Rochester replaced Tom Carper
Kai Kahele replaced Mazie Hirono
Jared Golden replaced Angus King
Jamie Raskin replaced Ben Cardin
Ayanna Pressley replaced Elizabeth Warren
Josh Gottheimer replaced Bob Menendez
Frank LaRose replaced Sherrod Brown
Beto O'Rourke replaced Ted Cruz
Alex Mooney replaced Joe Manchin

...I presume. There must have been quite a few Retirements on the Democratic Side this Election Cycle.

I'm quite surprised that AOC didn't run against Gillibrand because if Pressley got elected to MA-SEN you would have thought AOC had a good chance beating Kirsten.

AOC was running for President and Pressley did not challenge Warren in this TL. Warren retired after two terms as she was 75 years old and wants to work on other things.

I was considering this but I decided not to have her challenge Gillibrand. I also think it would look bad. AOC might run for Senate and higher office in the future. Remember, that in 2025, she will only be 35 years old.

Feb. 14, 2025: Assassination Attempt on Russian President Putin

Wikimedia Commons

Breaking News. In Russia, an assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin just failed. It is unclear who, or what group committed the assassination attempt. Some suspect that terrorists, or another group could have committed the attack, but nobody can be sure at this moment. The bullet was fired at a football game, or "soccer" as it is called in the United States. The bullet got within feet of Putin and three of Putin's guards were hit, one of which is in critical condition, the Russian government says. President Putin has blamed the attack on "Anti-Russian and Pro-Western terrorists in Russia, that are trying to destroy Russia's strength and prosperity." Putin has cracked down on all decent in the country and according to CNN, Putin controls his country with an iron fist and is very tough on the Russian people at all times. According to high ranking officials in the United States and Western Europe, "there is little evidence that Pro-Democracy and Western groups in Russia committed the attack on President Putin." Many believe that foreign terrorists might have committed the attack, and others say that the attack might have been an inside job planned by Putin and the Russian government to scare the Russian people and to tighten their grasp on the country even more. Russian officials have declared that the center-left party "A Just Russia" was declared illegal by state election officials for "illicit fundraising activities." Putin, 71 has been in power in Russia since late 1999 and has transformed the country from a weak country which is predecessor, Yeltsin had little control of to a strong force which Putin has complete control of. Putin has became a dictator over the last ten years in all ways except for name in Russia.

Apr. 2, 2025: President Harris, Senate & House Democrats reintroduce modified Green New Deal

Wikimedia Commons

Today, President Harris joined Senate and House Democrats to reintroduce a modified version of the Green New Deal. The Green New Deal was introduced in a resolution over six years ago, on February 7th, 2019 by former Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey and Progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In the Democratic Primaries beginning in 2019, several Democrats including then Senator Kamala Harris endorsed the green new deal, while others including then former Vice President Joe Biden, did not support the bill. Overtime, Biden came to support it, especially when he became President in 2021. Later that year, Progressive Democrats in the House of Representatives including Cortez introduced the bill and the bill passed there in the then Democrat controlled House. Then, it went to the Senate were the vote failed with four Democrats joining Republicans voting against the bill, citing that it is too extreme and is not the right way to fix the issue.

President Harris, today reintroduced the bill, along with freshman Massachusetts Senator Ayanna Pressley, New York Representative Ocasio-Cortez, and House Minority Whip Pramila Jayapal. The Senate will vote on the bill, in the coming weeks. It is unclear if it will pass to the Democrat-controlled Senate, as the Democrats only hold 50 seats with Vice President Pete Buttigieg breaking ties in the chamber. If the bill does pass the Senate, it will move to the Republican-controlled House, where it is unlikely to pass. Democrats have said that they are willing to compromise with Republicans in congress on other important issues. President Harris sighted in her inauguration speech, that Climate Change legislation is the biggest priority for the next four years. Some Republicans in both the Senate and House, have sighted the danger that Climate Change poses and have said that they want to work with Democrats on Climate Change to fix the issue, but have showed opposition to the Green New Deal, sighting that it is "too extreme."

He did not endorse the bill in the primaries, I believe. That isn't really important anyway as he endorsed/supported it when he became President in this timeline.

Apr. 25, 2025: Green New Deal fails in Senate

Wikimedia Commons

The Green New Deal failed in the Senate today by a close vote with 48 voting in favor of the bill and 52 voting against it. All of the 50 Republicans in the Senate voted against the bill. Some expected Vermont Liberal Republican Senator Phil Scott to vote for the bill but in the end he voted against the bill. 2 Democrats: Kristen Sinema (D-AZ) and Jon Tester (D-MT) voted against the bill. If both Tester and Sinema voted for the bill, the bill would have passed with Vice President Pete Buttigieg breaking the tie, but this did not end up happening.

Sinema and Tester both said that the "Green New Deal is too extreme and would not be effective in fighting Climate Change." Both said that bipartisan bill to fight climate change is at the top of their priorities in the current legislative session. Progressive Representatives in the House including Cortez spoke on the decision. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated, "we are very disappointed with the result of today's vote in the Senate. The Green New Deal is the best way to combat climate change but unfortunately that will not happen. We now need to move on and work with President Harris, and our majority in the Senate to combat Climate Change and to fix the critical issue."

Was the filibuster repealed? Because otherwise I doubt the Green New Deal would get a vote in the senate.

I never clarified. I actually never thought about this but yes it was repealed, when the Democrats had the majority in the Senate sometime between 2021 & 2025, during the Biden Presidency. Votes often eventually get to a vote even with the filibuster, but it was repealed. Every Democrat would have voted for the repeal of the filibuster and maybe one or two Republicans (Romney and maybe Murkowski) would join the Democrats to end the filibuster.

Jun. 1, 2025: President Harris, VP Buttigieg meet with top Democrats, Republicans in Congress to discuss Climate Change

Wikimedia Commons

Today, President Harris and Vice President Buttigieg met with top Democrats and Republicans in Congress to discuss Climate Change and the danger that it poses. Harris met with Representatives from the Senate: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representatives from the House; Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and Progressive House Democratic Whip Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). They all tried to come to an agreement on the issue. In her inauguration speech, President Harris pledged that one of her first acts as President was to combat Climate Change and to push a vote on the Green New Deal through the Senate. The vote failed in the Senate and will not proceed to the House of Representatives.

Harris spoke after and said that she will propose a meeting with top Democrats and Republicans in both the Senate and House to discuss Climate Change and to come to an agreement on the issue. Over the last few years, Republicans have moved on the issue of Climate Change and have admitted that it indeed does exist and is a danger to society in the coming years. One notable example, is Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy who came around on the issue towards the end of the 2010s. The meeting took place today and as of now, Democrats and Republicans have not come to an agreement yet on the issue. Senate Majority Leader Schumer, a Democrat said today that his majority caucus in the Senate is willing to compromise with Republicans to get a deal passed to combat Climate Change and other key issues. The Biden administration did work with allies around the world and the Paris Climate Accord, on some initiatives to combat Climate Change, but most believe that more needs to be done to combat Climate Change, with the United States taking the lead.

Jul. 12, 2025: Second meeting on Climate Change between Harris, Buttigieg, top Democrats and Republicans in Congress

Wikimedia Commons

President Harris, Vice President Buttigieg, and top Democrats and Republicans in Congress met today. In the senate, Freshman Ayanna Senator Pressley (D-MA) and Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) also attended the meeting. More Representatives in the House also attended the meeting. An agreement still was not agreed on today but according to reports, progress was made notably between Speaker of the House McCarthy and President Harris. It is not clear what progress was made but it is clear that the Democrats, who are much more worried about Climate Change, are willing to compromise with the Republicans to get a deal done. It was reported after the first meeting, that the Democrats still wanted many of the terms in the Green New Deal, but the Republicans disagreed and did not want to discuss the Green New Deal, as it is very extreme in their eyes.

Not all Republicans believe that Climate Change is a real issue by human activity. A recent poll by gallup showed that 64% of Republicans are worried about Climate Change, compared to 97% of Democrats. Of those 64% of Republicans, only 40% of them call it a top issue for then and their party. The Republican party overall is split on the issue but notable leaders in the party including Speaker of the House McCarthy, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and others view Climate Change as a top issue that needs to be tackled before "it is too late." When asked, President Harris stated, "The meeting was a success. We will meet again in the next few weeks to discuss the issue further."

Aug. 8, 2025: House opens investigations against President Harris and her record as Attorney General of California

Wikimedia Commons

The House of Representatives opened an investigation against President Kamala Harris and her time as Attorney General of California and a prosecutor there. During the campaign trail in the beginning of October, more information came out about then Vice President Kamala Harris and her record. The Republicans are going to hold many hearings on this to try to get information out about President Harris and her record to prove that she is not capable of serving as President. Many believe that this could proceed into an impeachment inquiry. House Investigations will begin in the next few weeks with interviews and subpoena of key witnesses, says House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Aug. 22, 2025: President Harris and Senate Democrats propose bill to repeal Tax Bill under Trump Presidency

Wikimedia Commons

Today, President Harris met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats in the Senate to propose a bill that would repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The Tax Bill of 2017 had effects that hurt coastal blue states and overall it cut taxes for the super rich which in effect caused the deficit to go up dramatically. Moderate Republicans in the House have raised concern about the deficit and some have said that they will support the bill proposed by Democrats. The bill also might have some support among Republicans in the Senate, including Utah Senator Mitt Romne, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Vermont Senator Phil Scott. Harris and Schumer and fairly confident that this bill will be passed by the Senate and House, and will be singed into law in a few months by President Harris. A vote in the Senate will take place in a few weeks after all details of the bill are finalized.
