If we’re talking of a place where... unusual... things occur, I think the West Country is a much better British fit for that type of thing than Essex.

The West Country's a bit too rural dominated to be a Florida, but you're right about its reputation for being full of disreputable oddballs. Maybe it's England's Arkansas?

I once heard someone say that the Forest of Dean was England’s Appalachia; wooded, history of mining (albeit not on as large a scale), and quite insular and culturally unique.

Clearly the city of Antwerp. Demographically very diverse, in practice a titanium tilt right-wing stronghold because of non-muslim minorities voting overwhelmingly right-wing (asians, indians, jewish community).

Lol what is "Florida" other than a microcosm of the entire country?  Its a state of +22M that is driving American economic/population growth on a national scale, is dinky Essex similarly dynamic?  lol

Y'all stop giving Florida a bad wrap, it probably beats the s[inks]t out of wherever y'all live anyway

If you read the original premise of the thread, it was not to compare the socioeconomic and geographic similarity of other regions to Florida, it was, “What is the area of your country which is the butt of their compatriots’ jokes?”.

And I’ll take London over Florida any day of the week.

The Florida of Sweden is probably Spain, since that's where the our worst seniors retire.

in Canada this is tough but Wasaga Beach, Hamilton and Vancouver Island are top contenders. Whats the "Florida" of your country?

How is Vancouver Island like Florida aside from having milder winters?

We've got some rather…unusual…activities on the southern coast of Hong Kong Island, plus a new theme park that promises to out-Disneyland Disneyland. Our senior citizens are fairly uniformly distributed across the city, though I suppose places like Sha Tin have more of a reputation for them. But the parts of Hong Kong that people tend to regard as more than a little kooky are the western islands, for reasons that rapidly become clear when you look at their inhabitants. Cheung Chau comes to mind.

I believe no Malaysian state is the butt of more jokes than Perlis, the tiniest state in the country, home to a parliamentary seat whose name literally translates to "large field," and with a population so backward it's clear why nobody else lives there. And they deserve every joke they get. (This is all in good fun, just to be clear.) Except for Singapore, sleazy politicians, and bad weather, nothing unites Malaysians more than ragging on that overgrown forest clearing.

The Florida of Canada is Florida itself.

For a coastal area in the South of a country with polarised politics and a reputation for being chaotic, this region of Turkey is an interesting comparison.

No party is especially dominant in the region, with AKP and CHP both having strong bases of support. The region is also the strong for the MHP with Osmaniye especially being an MHP stronghold, but they have quite far above average support across the region. The region is also the HDP's strongest outside of its core Kurdish regions, especially in Mersin. Not too different to Florida's famously polarised politics. Like Florida, its also more diverse than the national average, with a significant Arab and Kurdish population.

Adana also has a reputation for crazy or weird news stories, which I've seen compared to Florida man.

The UK's been covered well. For Scotland in particular it's probably Dundee, the heroin capital of Europe. The Western Isles are also extremely weird, but in a more Utah way (if Utah had a xenophobic streak).

Well, from geographic and climate point of view it would be Black Sea resort area (Sochi, and vicinity). But as a "jokes target" - undoubtely Chukotka area (just opposite Alaska in the far North-East)

Hainan has quickly become China's Florida. It transformed from a mosquito-infested swampland to a tropical resort destination. It has also become the site of China's main spaceport, and is notorious for grifting real estate developers. It has now been completely overrun with old people from China's northeastern region, which is similar to the US Midwest in climate and rust-belt economy. Most Chinese find Thailand to be cheaper and freer, but Hainan is for the less adventurous and those who aren't allowed to travel abroad.

All of China is so crowded that there are crazy people doing weird sh*t everywhere. You just don't hear about it because of media censorship.
