The county has only about 15% Hispanics and 3% Blacks. It seems to be trending increasingly Democratic, which is an oddity in the south that is not a suburb of a Major city.

As lfromnj noted, it's home to a big college.

But there are a few additional patterns worth noting. Along with Benton County, it's part of the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area, which is the second largest in the state after Little Rock. And unlike Little Rock, it's growing in an archetypal Sunbelt fashion, and both Washington and Benton are some of the fastest growing counties in the country, so much so that it may eventually overtake Little Rock. Growth in Northwest Arkansas is due to the presence of several major corporations--Walmart, J.B. Hunt, and Tyson Foods, which is the reason for the large Latino (and Pacific Islander) population.

All of that is to say that NWA is a big metropolitan area despite its horribly sprawling land use.

So basically Washington County's trend makes sense when you realize that it's part of a decently sized urban area, home to a lot affluent white professionals and college students, as well as non-negligible numbers of Latinos.

It's also the only state which Sanders won in the primary over Biden.
