Do you mean the mock election on uselectionatlas.org? Because that would be Dave's purview, not mine.

Yeah, like with the primaries.

Hopefully Dave isn't solely focusing his time on maps now. Tongue

Worst case scenario I suppose we could tell the Mods to set up a pinned thread where posts can't be deleted (pretty sure the Atlasia voting board is already configured like that though I am not sure if said permissions can be applied to a single thread) and for everyone to insert their predictions there, but it is of course not the same at all.

I suppose you could create a thread here:

https://talkelections.org/FORUM/index.php?board=110.0

Use a subject line that will get Dave's attention.

suggestion: make it possible for more than 25 posts per page to get displayed. Like maybe add options for up to 100. It gets old fast when searching.

As Dave pointed out in another thread, the hardware was upgraded and structural changes to the database were made to improve performance. There might be a bit of a breaking-in period because the changes require a lot of data caching. Ideally, the 1st time certain data is fetched should be slower, then the next times it will be much faster.

But over the next couple weeks, if the forum continues to stall out for minutes at a time at random points throughout the day, can you let me know? Preferrably what time it happened, and what pages you were viewing / actions you were performing when it happened.

Thank you much!

How would Virginia (and others) feel about removing the friend list feature? I do accept and occasionally send out friend requests as something of a hat-tipping gesture, but in reality they're probably the most useless feature on the forum.

I wouldn't mind it if it were gone, but since some like it, I'd rather just have a way to let people automagically know I don't accept friend requests.

If it's slowing the site down or contributing to the daily crashes, I think it's worth taking it out.

I'd be fine with removing the friend list. Given today's hyper-partisan climate, it seems out of place.

Nooo I love the buddy list. Also I can use it to show who my favourite posters are (or at least some of them).

Since Virginia and Dave are working to reduce crashes, I feel I should note that there was a fairly lengthy crash last night. I don't remember the exact time it started, but I was trying to post a reply to Calthrina at the time, which finally posted at 2:31 ET.

I don't know how much of a load they impose, but it has to be something.

Perhaps on expected periods of high traffic, signatures and avatars could be dropped?

Signature images generally tend to be hosted on other servers, and for avatar and signature images hosted on this web server, they are quickly cached by the browser and not re-sent again for week(s), as directed by the server.

In terms of serving up static content, there are other options to speed it up. Content accelerators such as Varnish do a good job caching images/other static files in RAM and then serving it up from there so Apache doesn't have to read it from the disk. There are downsides to that though, and I'm not sure this site needs it. I suppose we'll see on the next debate nights, assuming they generate as much activity.

Maybe make it optional to enable? Let everyone who wants the friend list keep theirs, and everyone else can disable their own. Just a thought...

I noticed that there was a comments feature in some of the older posters profiles, what happened to that?

Nothing did. It's not available for every user - only those who enabled the "Ultimate Profile" option, which expands the details of your profile. And on top of that, users can disable comments on their profile page.

Italy has two mini enclaves. We have Vatican City avatars. Could we have San Marino avatars too?
