From 1920 to today, only in 1960 (JFK in Illinois, Nixon winning his native California) did they vote different ways.  Both were pretty Republican during the Cold War years, then became safe Democrat in 1992 and mega-Democrat in 2008 (though some would argue Illinois was "merely" because of a native son effect for Obama).

1968, 1972 and 1980 CA, and IL could of voted D if RF Kennedy, Sgt Shriver or Teddy Kennedy would of been nominate. But, we were in a Cold War era, party unity was too great to overcome, when Kennedy primaried Carter and lost. John Kennedy only lost CA, by the same margin Kerry lost OH in 2004, RFK warned his brother that he didnt need TX in 1964, that's why RFK campaigned in 1968 in Cali than TX, but a Palestinian shot him there
