I seem to quite lonely on my side of the aisle in my lack of outrage over no extra money going to those already receiving money from the government.  The money in this bill isn't trying to stimulate the economy (which isn't really feasible until coronavirus actually goes away anyway); it's trying to ensure that those who are temporarily unable to earn money and don't have the savings to tide them over are still able to procure essentials such as food and shelter until the economy returns to a semblance of normality. People already on unemployment, SSI, or SSD aren't having their cash inflow affected.

As has been stated before, without adjusting for population, this data means nothing. Italy's infection and death rate are far higher as a % of their overall population and frankly, thats what matters in judging effectiveness of treatment and severity of outbreak.

Chinese data is suspect to say the least and the government subject large parts of the country to draconian lockdown policies. India has been oddly immune to the virus despite going on lockdown recently too. The US is bound to have the most cases at this rate by sheer population alone.

Not to mention the fact that the graph cannot account for differences in testing methods between countries.  These countries are testing at different rates, and they have different requirements for who is eligible for a test.  Comparing from country to country in this way is completely meaningless.  It just looks pleasing to the eye.

Yup. # of detected cases is a function of true # of cases AND # of testing. The fact that USA (esp NY) recently has been ramping up testing BIG LIGUE is in all the news. And most MSM moved focus to # of deaths which is a better (though lagging) proxy. No way Ghost of Ruin and others could have missed that.

It is not the sad part, though. The sad part is that the red avatars/experts in math or epidemiology who know better haven't called out this (IMO highly) misleading stats Sad

I encountered an argument on Twitter the other day where one guy was trying to prove to the other that Republican-run states (such as Wyoming and Idaho) were doing a better job of handling the outbreak than Democratic-run states (such as New York and California) by simply pointing out that Wyoming and Idaho have many fewer cases than New York and Cali.

Brain.  Melted.

Relatively good news from Germany.

https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/03/25/world/europe/25reuters-health-coronavirus-germany-hospitals.html
German Hospital Body Sees Coronavirus Infection Rate Slowing Down Next Week
Quote
BERLIN — The coronavirus infection rate will likely slow down in Germany at the beginning to middle of next week, the head of the German hospital federation (DKG) told the Funke group of newspapers.

"In the medium term, we expect infection rates to slow down due to social distancing," DKG President Gerald Gass said.

"However, this will not be significantly reflected in the registered infection numbers until the beginning to the middle of next week," he added.

He said around 1,000 coronavirus patients were being treated in intensive care units in German clinics at the moment.

In Germany the gatherings of more than two people are forbidden (unless family).

Here is one of the first videos of an Australian man, Tim McLean, reporting via video from the streets of Wuhan as he goes outside shopping for food after a long isolation period having been quarantined for over 60 days.

Beshear should take a note from Campania regional president and noted badass Vincenzo De Luca, and threaten to send in the national guard armed with flamethrowers.

In Italy there is not a national guard
De Luca told "Carabinieri" a gendarmerie type police but this is not under the Governors, actually De Luca has not a police force

No many the quantity of threads, this is still an overblown reaction. Glad Trump is waking up to the economic consequences.

First post in and of course it's this guy and his "hot takes"

Guess I'll be avoiding these COVID-19 megathreads for good now
Just out him on Ignore.

Don't let trumpanzees ruin Atlas for you.

My ignore button has been broken for months. All it does it take me to the first page of the thread

That’s what usually happens when you put somebody on ignore.

I press it, sends me to the first page, then still shows the posts of the user I ignored as if I didn't press it

I mean, China has several times the population of the U.S. If you adjust for population, it's going to look a lot worse in comparison to China.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot threatens to shut down city’s parks and lakefront

Mayor Lori Lightfoot threatened to shut down the city’s parks and lakefront if the city’s residents don’t obey Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s stay-at-home order.

"If we have to because you are not educating yourself into compliance, and if you are not abiding by these very clear but necessary stay-at-home orders, we will be forced to shut down our parks and entire lakefront if people continue to flout these social distancing” rules, a visibly frustrated Lightfoot said.

"Educate yourself into compliance" or we will do it for you.

All very normal.  No erosion of democracy to be seen here!

This sort of thing seems to happen basically everywhere a looser quarantine is tried. They order a bunch of businesses shut, so people decide to got to some crowded park/beach hotspot with all their friends, completely neglecting the entire point of why everything is shut down. So, after repeated warnings and people repeatedly flouting them, they shut down parks. It would be nice if people could just use the common sense not to go to crowded places.

Reminds me of people -- though I've been seeing less and less of them -- who took "self-quarantine" to mean "self-quarantine at a party with seven or eight friends".

A lot of this is due to increased availability of testing.  But it's still terrifying.

Why did the Senate move first on this and not the House?  Usually the House is much more efficient, and their bill seems much better.  So what caused them to give up the momentum?

The House passes bills all the time that go nowhere afterwards, but whatever passes the Senate has bipartisan support.

What Georgia’s mayors and county leaders were told about the pandemic.

Quote
On Tuesday, we told you that the Georgia Municipal Association had recommended that all 538 cities in the state declare public health care emergencies in an effort to tamp down the coronavirus pandemic.

The GMA did so after a Monday afternoon online presentation by Dr. Carlos del Rio, the executive associate dean for Emory at Grady Health System, aimed at mayors, city managers, county commission chairs and county managers across the state.

The article embeds the PowerPoint presentation used and has a link to the audio recording.  I've read the presentation and it's well worth a look.

And I wouldnt doubt if Florida follows suit, due to their ignorant decision to allow all those college students to continue to gather/party.

Don't hear a ton about it.

It's already bad in Orange county and down in the Gold Coast area.

Luckily in my county after days of testing we are still only at 20 cases with 11 recoveries so far

New York City area sees 28% of all tests coming back positive

New York City, which has overtaken Seattle as the biggest coronavirus hotspot in the US, has seen 28 per cent of its tests coming back positive, suggesting the virus has been circulating in America's largest city for weeks.

Deborah Birx, the co-ordinator of the White House's coronavirus task force, said the 28 per cent rate for the New York City area far outstrips the national average of less than 8 per cent.

“So to all of my friends and colleagues in New York, this is the group that needs to absolutely social distance and self-isolate at this time,” said Dr Birx. “Clearly the virus had been circulating there for a number of weeks to have this level of penetrance into the general community.”

Earlier in the day, Andrew Cuomo, the New York governor, said the state had recorded 5,707 new cases in the past 24 hours, with 4,300 of them in either New York City or suburban Westchester County. New York City now has 20,875 cases, more than all but five countries.
