I wish we had an “authoritarian” response ten days ago when this was posted. Looks like freedom doesn’t cure Covid-19, who knew?

Does "Praise God-Emperor Trump or watch more of your citizens die" count? Because we sure have that now.

It's hard to believe the U.S. is doing worse on civil liberties than Singapore is.

Who would have ever - EVER - thought the U.S. would do worse than SINGAPORE?

Let this sink in for a moment.

I fully expected we'd be where we are under Trump and figured it would happen sooner or later under the Republicans.

Dude we kidnap people, take them to black sites in Thailand, and shock their balls with electricity and then kill their kids with drones. Who did you think we were?

I was delusional and foolish enough to think we were better than this.

Disturbing stories starting to come in.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/maine-residents-try-force-quarantine-out-towners-cutting-down-tree-n1171596

Vigilantes in Maine cut down a tree in an attempt to quarantine two individuals they suspected of being infected.  They had no symptoms, they were simply from out of state.

https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-police-turning-parts-of-uk-into-dystopia-after-prosecuting-people-driving-due-to-boredom-and-shoppers-11965903

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-derbyshire-52095857

Police in the UK have been citing people for offenses such as, "out for a drive due to boredom", and "multiple people from the same household going to the shops for non-essential items".  In other areas, they've used drones to film people outside on walks and dyed a lagoon black.

So, a sign that democracy works rather well, even in the middle of a crisis.

Cool.

The people supporting lockdowns are being strikingly selfish. They're putting money ahead of our social institutions, which will suffer under lockdowns.

they trying to close the gun dealers down, with mixed results

Some states are making exceptions for gun dealers in the "shutdown" orders(IL,OH,MI), some are not and have been getting push back from the good guys and have made changes to include exceptions for gun dealers (CA,PA...NJ is still in the courts) and some have not mentioned gun dealers at all (NY,MA,DC) and others only list "sporting goods" stores as exceptions (MN,MD).

Also, there were 4 times as many background checks this March vs last March.  Covid 19 is almost a good at selling guns as Obama was.
NJ and CA have added gun stores to their list of exceptions (meaning, they've allowed gun stores to open back up), good news!

cite for NJ

CA/LA county cite

Our social institutions not going on hiatus is not more important than saving tens of thousands of lives. Your "putting money ahead" comment is nonsense.

Lawsuits Swell as Owners, From Gun Shops to Golf Courses, Demand to Open
Quote
Some of those suing their state governments seek redress for specific, local grievances, as with the golf course or in a similar suit in Pennsylvania being pursued by a company that says it is the country’s oldest manufacturer of orchestra-quality bells and chimes. Those lawsuits and one in Arizona are rooted in the Fifth Amendment, which requires due process and guarantees compensation for property seized by the government.

Other constitutional amendments have been invoked in several lawsuits in recent weeks attempting to force open gun stores, or to argue that measures to curb the virus should not outweigh rights like freedom of assembly and religion.

Americans arguing for the right to commit societal suicide by greed and mass murder by stupidity is so perfectly in character. As a nation, we worship at the altar of Mammon, sacrificing our selves and the lives of our fellow human beings.

As someone who understands the gravity of this situation and believes we do in fact need legally enforceable social distancing measures in place, I don’t think there’s anything necessarily immoral about challenging the legality of those measures that are likely unconstitutional. Thus, while I understand why executives at the municipal/county/statewide level needed to act quickly with bold executive orders, I think it is now incumbent on the state legislatures (and congress) to start crafting more carefully thought out fallback measures that would be on more Constitutionally firm ground.

I'm not sure why you think small business owners are an amalgamation of Scrooge McDuck, Ebenezer Scrooge, & an '80s villain. Most are people who just wanna continue feeding their families. While I agree that they should remain closed, we should all try to have a little compassion for people whose livelihoods were just completely halted.

Regarding golf courses, I'm all for them staying open, so long as they do it right: pay online; no carts, everybody walks; the range is closed; the golf shop is closed, except to buy balls - again, pay with PayPal, Venmo, or whatever; use the flagsticks with the hole covered, & if the ball hits the cup, it's in.

It keeps business open & gives an avenue to be outside & "exercise" - it's walking 4 miles with a set of clubs on your back. Social distancing is practically an automatic with golf.
