Mike Pence had trouble concentrating during his bible studies. He looked around his study in Indiana and everything seemed small and unimportant. His mind went back to his meeting with his National Security Advisor 16 days ago. Back to the exact moment when his Chief of Staff came into the room and said the words that Mike will never forget.
“Mr. Vice President the President just tweeted…”. Mike closed his eyes. The memory was too painful. That everything he worked towards for, for years would end like this. He had feared that he might displease god by joining Donald Trump on the ticket in 2016. But he thought he could do the work of god in office. And he even thought that he had so many accomplishments. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough.
Mike looked towards the TV which was set to Fox News but muted. Acting President Pelosi’s press secretary Taylor Griffin was holding her first press conference as the White House press secretary. Stephanie Grisham was nowhere to be seen; Mike mused that she had been fired. He didn’t mind at all after what happened. Despite his mood Mike unmuted the television.
Taylor Griffin: …no plans for further military retaliation against Iran at this point. Instead we are asking everyone to stay calm. Yes, Peter.”
Peter Alexander, NBC News: “Has President Pelosi talked to the Independent Republicans yet? Do they support her agenda?”
TG: “Nancy Pelosi has talked to all the leaders in the senate and the house and almost everyone agreed to come together for our country. Kevin.”
Kevin Corke, Fox News: “Several liberal media outlets and Acting President Pelosi herself were talking about her becoming the 46th president of the United States. This isn’t actually the case since she is only discharching the duties of the office. Is this an attempted power grab by the former speaker?”
TG: “Kevin we are in a national crisis. This is not the time to discuss semantics. Next question, Major?”
Major Garret, PBS: “Who will succeed Spea…President Pelosi as Speaker of the House of Representatives?”
TG: “As White House Press Secretary I can’t comment on who the House will choose as their new speaker. But President Pelosi is looking forward to work with whomever the House of Representatives chooses. Kelly.”
Kelly O’Donnell, MSNBC: “Does President Pelosi plan to run for the Democratic nomination at this point?”
TG: “Kelly that isn’t a question on the president’s mind right now. Her only goal is to solve the health crisis and the breakdown of order in some parts of our country. Kayla.”
Kayla Tausche, CNBC: “Who will President Pelosi choose as her Vice President? Are the rumors true that she might ask former Vice President Mike Pence to come back?”
Mike leaned in and listened more closely.
TG: “Whatever happens I can assure you that Mike Pence will not be asked to serve in this administration. Cecilia?”
Of course, he didn’t expect it. He could nerver work along side such a godless person. His mind wandered off.
Cecilia Vega, ABC News: “My question is regarding the situation in California and Ore-“
Just then Karen and Charlotte walked in. They had a determined look on their faces. Mike looked at them.
“Mike I just talked to Nick.", Karen said. "He thinks that you should run for the Republican nomination. And we agree with him.”
“Mother I don’t think that this can work. Not after what happened. Not after god abandoned me.”
Karen walked over to Mike and took his hands into hers. He resisted the impulse to flinch.
“Mike my darling this is god's mission for you. He has cursed our country with this pestilence because of our sins. Murdering children, allowing sodomites to marry. And electing Donald Trump as president. But he saved you. He gave you a second chance. Not only when you became ill and survived this curse but also when Trump-“
Mike tensed up. Karen noticed it an changed the subject.
“He gave you a second chance Mike. He rescued you. And now you must pay him back. By offering your service to god and our nation. You must work every minute of every hour of every day to cleanse our nation of our sins. No one else can do that but you Mike. I know that. God knows that. You have no choice.”
Mike looked lovingly at his wife and trusted companion.
“I love you mother.”
They kissed. After hugging Charlotte he went to his desk and began dialing his phone. Mike was certain now: he was god’s vessel and a he had to rid the nation and the whole world of sin and let god's light shine from every corner of this earth.
