Interestingly enough, in 1976 there were discussions around a Reagan/Wallace third party ticket. And then Reagan decided to primary Ford. The Conservative Caucus, led by Meldrim Thompson and Howard Phillips (of later Constitution Party affiliation), tried to do it. Linked is some information about that:
