Same way they try to win currently. They'd just be successful less often (although not as rarely as people might think).

Let's say the EC was somehow abolished after the 2000 election. Assuming minimal butterflies, Bush still wins in 2004, Obama wins in 2008 and 2012. Clinton probably wins in 2016, but do you really think she'd be favored to win re-election in 2020?
