I know Mackler wouldn't have had a shot in the general, but how the hell did this happen?
She is very clearly the black candidate (black name) and her last name starts with a B, which means she is first on the ballot. Not much more to it than that.

Good point on the last names.  It's worth noting on the Republican side that there were more than a dozen candidates (not just Hagerty and Sethi), and Sethi came last in alphabetical order and was on page 2 of the ballot.  The margin is enough that it probably wasn't decisive, but that was probably worth a couple points to Hagerty's margin.

But I was told the gop was racist because of a race in Washington?

I mean, Tennessee Democrats have nominated 'B' candidates before just because their name came first on the ballot. This isn't something new in the situations where they don't care about their statewide races.

TN Dems gonna TN Dem ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be specific, look back at TN-Sen ‘12 and TN-Gov ‘14 (they have a history of this)

Alexander won this seat by 30 points in 2014.  This might be the most likely Senate seat other than Tom Cotton's and Shelly Capito's to swing Republican in 2020, given that the Democrats did not nominate their handpicked candidate.

But, even if Hagerty matches the 30 point margin, it would be a very different map.  There's no way that Hagerty wins Shelby County and comes within single digits in Davidson County.

Yeah, it’s not going to be pretty. I read somewhere that she raised less than $10,000. Granted, Democrats were never going to win this seat anyways and she is ideologically better than Mackler, so I have to say I’m fine with her win.

Tennessee Democratic voters are objectively the dumbest bunch of Democrats in the country. This is the fourth time since 2012 that the states' voters have selected the top-of-the-ballot option in lieu of the actual preferred candidate (or even just an alternative who was qualified) for a top-ticket race:

  • Mark Clayton, a white supremacist, got the Senate nomination in 2012 (he ran again in 2014 but was removed from the ballot by the state party; who knows if he would have won the nomination again)
  • Gordon Ball, a nobody, got the Senate nomination in 2014
  • Charlie Brown (pictured here) got the Governor's nomination in 2014
  • Marquita Bradshaw, Senate nominee, 2020 (I know little about her, but one look at her website is sufficient to make a call here)

The Tennessee Democratic Party needs to abolish primaries and return the nomination process for statewide races to its state committee. Obviously the voters cannot be trusted to not show up and just punch the first name on the ballot.

Im shocked at how Mackler came in third
and the two candidates in front of him raised 14k combined while he raised like 2.4 mil
like how did that happen? DSA has shown itself as being very good at getting out the vote so I wonder if they were invested in this race?

Random observation I noticed in yesterday's TN Senate GOP primary last night - Sethi overall did better on election day votes than early vote sometimes up to 15% in Nashville and surrounding counties, and about 13% better in Memphis. However, in most of the eastern portion of the state he generally did worse on election day - for example he was winning Washington County on early returns but ended up losing it, slightly behind in Sullivan County on early returns but ended up losing by 5%. There were a few counties where he did better such as Knox and Hamilton which might be explained by his generally stronger performance in urban areas, but this trend wasn't necessarily unique to urban areas - in the central and western portions of the state Sethi still did better on election day votes in more rural counties. Curious to know what could explain this trend - of course there have been detectable trends of early vs election day vote splits but I haven't really observed a this type of geographic divide in behavior of early vs election day vote before.

Today: HAWAII: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/08/08/us/elections/results-hawaii-primary-elections.html

just 5 races to cover here - 3 congressional and 2 mayoral. But it's something.

results will start coming in sometime after midnight ET. At least in the past, the state has favored releasing results in bunches every hour or so.

This wasn't a primary as such, but there is a new Republican nominee in TX-04, replacing DNI John Ratcliffe.

State Senator Pat Fallon, who represents about a third of the district in the state senate.

Polls in Hawaii just closed and in HI-02, Kahele wins with over 75%.

He will replace Tulsi Gabbard.

Curtis is the 17th QAnon believer nominated this year by Republicans.
But let's talk some more about how everything will revert back to normal when Trump is gone.
