Although she was controversial and looked unqualified, there is no doubt Governor Sarah Palin excited the republican base, which is something Senator McCain lacked.  How badly would he lose if he went with his instincts (against everyone else's advice) and chooses Joe Lieberman, centrist Democrat from Connecticut?

Would Obama crack 400 EVs?  Would Hillary make Kentucky and Arkansas competitive? Could Obama flip Georgia?  Discuss with maps...

It would be even worse than the Palin pick as it would depress Republican turnout in both suburban and rural areas

Against Obama:

Obama/Biden 379 53.5%
McCain/Lieberman 159 45%

Against Hillary:

Clinton/Bayh 380 53%
McCain/Lieberman 158 45.5%

Yeah, GOP turnout would definitely be depressed. The tremendous backlash among conservatives would be such that many of them simply wouldn't vote for such a ticket. Sure, they liked his hawkishness & his having been a thorn in the side of the Democrats, but they were never gonna accept somebody who was pro-gun control, pro-gay rights, & pro-choice on abortion to the point that he voted against a partial-birth abortion ban as part of their ticket.

To put it simply, he'd blow things up. It'd be like if Obama picked some right-winger that only agreed with him on one thing.

As for its impact on the overall result, Obama wins MO & MT, & the Democrats pick up GA & perhaps KY in the Senate.
