King and Country: The XVII Century
By HenryWallaceVP and Lumine Von Reuental

Players and Countries:

Experienced Players Only:
(Only players experienced and skilled in these games)

Kingdom of France: King Louis XIV (Dr_Novella)
Ottoman Empire: Sultan Mehmed IV (jdb)
Kingdom of England: King Charles II (Kingpoleon)
Archduchy of Austria: Emperor Leopold I (Spamage)
Kingdom of Spain: Queen Regent Mariana (Dereich)
United Provinces of the Netherlands: Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt (sjoycefla)

Open Countries:
(Nominally open to all players)

Kingdom of Denmark-Norway: King Frederick III (JacksonHitchcock)
Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: King Michael I (S019)
Kingdom of Sweden: Queen Regent Hedwig Eleonora (Gorguf)
Tsardom of Russia: Tsar Alexis I (YPestis25)
Brandenburg-Prussia: Elector Frederick William (Kalwejt)
Safavid Empire: Shah Suleiman I (PSOL)

Semi-Open Countries:
(Open if previous nations are taken, or with a justified request to the GM)

Kingdom of Portugal: Prince Regent Peter (Ishan)
Duchy of Savoy: Duke Charles Emmanuel II
Electorate of Saxony: Elector John George II
Electorate of Bavaria: Elector Ferdinand Maria (SlamDunk)
Duchy of Lorraine: Duke Charles IV
Republic of Venice: Doge Domenico II Contarini

In 1670, Europe is at a crossroads. Although it has been over 20 years since the Peace of Westphalia, Germany has yet to fully recover. The fortunes of the House of Habsburg are being eclipsed by a rising French hegemony, and some fear that Louis XIV, the "Sun King" of France, may attempt to establish a universal monarchy on the lines of Charles V's over a century earlier.

Meanwhile, religious differences are largely being displaced by political and commercial interests. Reasons of state are now more important than ever. The notion of a "balance of power" is also just beginning to be established. In the Age of Absolutism, the fate of Europe depends on the whims of its crowned heads.

Are you up for the challenge?

Rules:

1. Turns: We will follow the BoP/SoD model (also seen in the brilliant Concert/Encore duology) as players play turns of a year (7 days in RL, with a possible midturn on a turn-by-turn basis if deemed necessary by the GMs due to factors such as a large multiplayer war), react to ongoing crises and events and post their policies, moves and reactions to what other players do. The Game starts in the first months of 1670 and history is, of course, considered to have gone as it did before that.

2. Messages: Secret messages between the players must include both GMs, all of them. Assuming conversations take place off the forum we will insist on recieving some sort of summary of what is being discussed, in order to follow the events in a proper manner. Discord and IRC is allowed for OOC planning, but not official interactions between players.

4. Historical Events: The dice system shall be used. There could be Special Events based on situations, giving a specific number of days to players to react and a larger level of detail on the particular situation. Players are encouraged to propose events to simulate as well.

5. Stats and Warfare: The stats for each player will be focused on "Economic Standings" and "Popularity". The dice system shall be used when calculating war and battle results. As standing armies were relatively common by this time, official army numbers will exist but mercenaries can also be hired.

6. Game Over: Game Over can come in three ways: Being deposed by another player (Invasion scenario), being deposed in a coup or revolt (Revolt Scenario) or having your dynasty die out or lack an heir to continue playing (Dynasty Scenario). Having your monarch die even by enemy action won't be by itself a Game Over and the player will retain preference to continue playing said nation should he wish to do so. Potentially, the death of a monarch under a complex succession scenario could trigger a War of Succession.

7. Players, Nations and Simulation: NPC countries will be simulated as always, but with a twist. While it is our stated objective to answer all player questions within 48 hours (and will request that people post in public should we fail to answer to be reminded), the amount of information we can provide will be very limited, to represent both the limited amount of information reasonably available to the character being played and to avoid giving too much of an advantage to players as GM. Questions such as "What does NPC Nation want in return for this?" or "What would happen if I did X" will either not bring an answer or a very limited one.

King Frederick III please, I would opt to pick Mariana, but when I played as her previously I felt that I didn't have a grasp on the history that was good enough to do her service. While my knowledge of Danish history past Valdemar II isn't amazing it is better than most of my knowledge of this time!

Granted!

I have a feeling I will join soon considering the inactivity in the other historical role play thread.

NTP has confirmed to me that he won't be continuing the other game, due to his deciding to take a break from the forum.

I wanted to take the Ottoman Empire first, but... I feel adventurous tonight.

Brandenburg-Prussia please.

Granted!

I want the Safavids, oh pretty please. I’m preparing something delightful there.

I'll consider that request justified. Granted!

Here to grab the Dutch Republic. May we avoid our rampjaar

Granted!

Also, France and the Ottomans are being kept open for now per request as X makes his decision, so please don't request them in the meantime.

Because of my excellent track record as a responsible custodian of sacred religious sites whenever they've fallen under my control over the years in these games, I think it is only fitting that I pick The Ottoman Empire.  I've no doubt the Holy Land will fair well during my calm, peaceful, and thoroughly uneventful reign Evil

Granted!

I'd like to return as the Sun King.

Granted!

I would like to play as Charles II, please.

polish-lithuanian commonwealth

I badly lost the last one of these that I played but no harm in trying again

Yeah sorry about the whole Iberian situation last time, I definitely think I went too far Tongue.

Both granted!

I can't possibly forsee anything going wrong.

Interesting to see the two major powers who would most likely come to a confrontation with the Ottomans (Spain and Austria) remain unclaimed. Spain is in a horrible position currently, and iirc Austria's position isn't amazing either.

Personally I'd still take Austria over Spain, since the whole "dynasty dying out" stuff is pretty bad and can result in sudden game over.

Spain is 60% hopeless in the last game I was amazed on how long Charles lasted iirc 3 years.

A lot of that hopelessness was due to poor simulation on my part, which I apologize for. Fortunately, Lumine will handle the simulation this time, so Spain should be a lot more playable.

I would love to play as Austria, I've always been a Habsburg partisan at heart. Wink Purple heart

Granted! I suppose that means Dereich is now Spain. We’ll start tomorrow!

I'd be interested in joining but I'm unsure which of the remaining nations to claim.

EDIT: I think I'd like to take Doge Domenico II Contarini and the Republic of Venice.

Granted!

Can we get an extension till next weekend?  RL has been crazy busy

Granted, though I'm not sure how much trust you should have in a delay overseen by an Iowa Democrat Tongue.

Due to a preponderance of missing orders, we have decided to extend the turn deadline by 24 hours. If you haven't sent your orders in yet, please, be sure to get them in as soon as possible.

Before we begin Turn 2, we'll have to find a new and experienced French player, as our current one is inactive. So is the Swedish player, so if you're playing as a smaller or less important country, I'd encourage you to consider moving up and taking his place if you think you're ready. Additionally, our Prussian player left the game, so that's another option if you're interested in moving up. The Portuguese player also had an inactivity game over, but it's not necessary to fill that gap since Portugal is a low-priority country. This message applies as well to users not currently playing the game, as we now have two available open countries if you'd like to join, and one more (France) if you're experienced.

Well,I want to switch to be honest, maybe I could be Prussia now if possible ?.

Heya Guys, so I’m new here and I quite like the look of this.
Anything available for a new guy?

Sweden is open, if you're interested.

Can I request an extension on this turn?

For how long? As of now turn orders are due before 12:00 am on March 17.

Plantagenet, I'm sorry to say that Tuscany isn't available. They're a bit too small and irrelevant, but there are some other smaller countries you could take if you insist. Portugal, Savoy, Saxony, Lorraine, and Venice are your other options if not Sweden.

I'll try to briefly explain how these games work. In the gameplay thread you'll find prompts for your nation, which you'll want to answer in your orders, which you'll PM to me. You can also include things in your orders that are not mentioned in the prompts, such as military movements and economic policies. Diplomacy is mostly done through PMs, though I think you have to have a certain number of posts (20?) to be able to send them. Other than that, there isn't much else to add. Hopefully, you'll find that it comes naturally and learn more as you go along.

Ah no worries! I always have a soft spot for the Medici in this era, and I love the dynamics of 1600s Italy. If Saxony is free, I could be up for that!

Granted!

Also, how does this game work? I can’t seem to find any diplomacy in the game thread so where does any negotiation happen, or even just events in your nation?

Negotiations happen more in PMs.
Very strange

Why? You want everyone to know what you're planning?

TimTurner has requested via PM to join as Sweden, so his prompts have been added. Since the Swedish player didn't send in orders last turn, his prompts remain mostly the same with some slight add-ons.

Reminder: Unless anyone requests an extension for a specific amount of time, the turn ends at 12:00 am on the 17th. So get your final orders in by tomorrow night!
