2024 election: Bloomberg vs. Cagle vs. Ocasio-Cortez

President Michael Bloomberg and Vice President Hillary Clinton narrowly defeated Donald Trump in 2020, with the Republicans keeping the Senate and retaking the House in 2022. Legislatively powerless, Bloomberg focused his term on reversing many of Trump's key policies and issuing executive orders to curb climate change and boost relations with the rest of the world.

Bloomberg faced a challenge from Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, but the 82-year-old senator, burned out from a decade in the spotlight, didn't do as well as he had in his last 2 bids and lost by a decisive margin. However, Bloomberg switched to independent before the general, hoping to boost his numbers with moderates and Republicans.

The Republicans, angered more than ever from Trump's defeat, nominated far-right firebrand Casey Cagle. Cagle's highest office before his bid was Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, but he made a name for himself and became a media sensation known for his controversial statements, such as "You know what Pinochet did in Chile? With all the communists and socialists? He took 'em up on helicopters and tossed them into the ocean. That's the type of leadership we need to see in America. The Democrat Party is corrupting our society." He doubled down on radical politics, picking former Trump advisor Stephen Miller as his running mate.

Despite Sanders losing the primary, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Lee Carter ran a left-wing campaign on the Freedom Democratic ticket. While this angered a lot of party insiders who feared it would throw the election to Cagle, polls showed her running even with Bloomberg in some key states. The ticket got the endorsement of Bernie Sanders.

All 3 candidates are historically unpopular, with Bloomberg sitting at a 39% approval rating, Ocasio-Cortez at 34%, and Cagle at 30%.
