I read that one of Mondale's aides used a football analogy to explain Ferraro: they needed a pass. It was a desperation move. And IIRC, before they decided on a pass, Mondale's favorite was Michael Dukakis... fortunately, Willie Hurton didn't get his furlough until 1986.
Hart probably would've been the best running mate... assuming he could keep it in his pants, of course. With Hart, you have age, regional, & ideological balance, & he could flip CO & possibly NM, but that's a best-case scenario.
