Both were RINOs/DINOs on their party’s social issues for most of their careers and then suddenly embraced one of their party’s wedge issues during a re-election campaign while denying that they would run for President in an election that would be early into their new term in the office they held, but then ran for President in that election anyway, but their campaigns fizzled out before the Iowa Caucus.

Gillibrand didn't suddenly embrace  the party's stances on social issues. She had been making her left turn ever since she became senator.

Gillibrand was a DINO for like five minutes when she represented an upstate swing district for a couple of years. Once she became a Senator in 2009, she moved markedly to the left because then she was representing New York as a whole not just a relatively conservative slice of it.
