Since thumb already got to citing the articles, in a nutshell, this is a necessary bill to protect Atlasian steelworkers and the risk of job loss that comes with the rise in outsourcing these materials.

What exactly is the state of the steelmaking industry in Atlasia that they need such strong protectionist measures?

Especially considering this is an outright blanket ban (and not just a regular tariff) I don't think this bill is a good idea and I am likely to vote no.

I have to say I echo my predecessor's concerns. I'm not going to say action on this is unnecessary, nor will I rule out supporting an amended version of this bill, but just banning all steel imports seems reckless.

I'd like to see an impact assessment from the GM before supporting this; whilst it's vital we support our domestic steel industry I'm worried this could have a major short term impact on infrastructure projects

although on reflection I'm not sure I could support a bill that completely bans foreign steel imports; when the evidence is that the high tariff regime currently in RL is already causing some teething difficulties for the industry.

Tabling vote

72 hours

(the maximum period for tabling votes is actually 48 hours I learned recently, but I'm suspending the rules to make it 72 hours as most votes are)

As fhtagan's closest ideological successor, I'd like to sponsor this as well.

Now what? So, I guess I object to Thumb's and hope someone seconds my sponsorship?

BTW - where are the current House rules, so I can read up on them and not ask these stupid questions?

You can only sponsor one thing at a time so you'd have to choose to either sponsor this or the affirmative action bill. You also don't need someone to second a motion to assume sponsorship - so you can simply object then motion yourself.

That said, if you chose to sponsor this bill, then I'm fine with withdrawing my motion and letting you sponsor.

I'll take the Affirmative Action Bill. You can have this.
