Tammy Baldwin Debate Answers

140222-O-QS269-211 by
Wisconsin National Guard, on Flickr

Quote
Opening Statement:

"When I was younger, I could have never imagined myself on this stage running for President of the United States. As a young lesbian in Wisconsin, I had never seen anyone like me run for office. However, I saw a system that needed substantial change. I saw people who went broke because an insurance company wouldn't cover them. I saw don't ask, don't tell create a forced closeting of LGBTQ servicemembers. I saw an unjust criminal justice system that was harsher on black and brown people for the same offenses. That's what inspired me to run for office, I never set out to make history, I set out to create change.

That same desire for progress inspired this run for President. We have seen this President create tax breaks for his wealthy friends, while the middle class is disappearing. We have a President more concerned with petty Twitter spats than making sure no person in the most prosperous nation in the world is without health insurance. The truth is, Americans don't care about your spats with Mitch McConnell, they care about solutions to the problems they're facing. As your President, I will focus on the real work, not on social media.

We need to make college debt-free for every American, make the minimum wage a living wage, and we have to take on the culture of corruption that has its hold on Washington. The wealthy have plenty of representation in this administration, but everyone else is being left behind. Under my administration, the wealthy will not be valued more than anyone else, and I will work hard for all Americans, not just those who have maxed out their donations."

Quote
To Senator Baldwin: You have stated that you want to quote "get money out of politics" in a tweet lamenting Senator Booker's withdrawal from the race. With this in mind, does Mr. Steyer's current lead in the polls concern you at all?

"I have nothing against Mr. Steyer, except maybe his choice in ties. I do think the influence of money on our politics is on display in this election as it was in my own race in 2018, with outside groups and the Koch family spending millions to run a smear campaign that Wisconsinites didn't fall for. But, it's not just about elections, and it's not just Citizen's United that has corroded our system. It's the fact that there is a revolving door between corporate boards, political offices, and lobbying jobs. It's that under this administration, wealthy donors get powerful appointments so they can maintain the status quo.

Under my plan to root out corruption, this would end. It starts with overturning Citizen's United, and asking every American to pitch in a few bucks to make our elections publicly funded. We will also prohibit Congress and the Executive from being on corporate boards while in office, slow the revolving door, and require every Presidential candidate to disclose her tax returns. The American public has made it clear that their support isn't for sale, and we need rules in place to stop the wealthy from trying to buy it."

Quote
Closing Statement:

"I want to thank my fellow candidates, the moderators, and the audience for this debate tonight. America is ready for a change to the status quo. We are ready for the wealthy to pay their fair share so we can all benefit from universal childcare, accessible education, and paid family leave. We are ready to end the culture of corruption in Washington that has been fed by this President and his wealthy friends. We are ready for a President more concerned with the needs of the public than with Twitter feuds.

I stand here tonight running for that change, with both the plans and the experience to bring it about. Democrats can't let ourselves be run by fear of losing, but by the hope of what a win means. Winning the White House is about saying no to the politics of division, it's about laying out a vision of what a more perfect union looks like. It's not about hedging on our principles and watering down our goals because that's what consultants tell us will win. Democrats are at our best when we are fighting for the little guy, and that's what this campaign is all about. Thank you!"

He owned shares in Private Prisons, responsible for people not getting adequate care in a prison not up to National Standards.
He claims Climate Change is his Top Priority, but as recently as 2011 he was actively working with the Coal Industry to pollute American cities.
Who is he? It isn't Mike Pence. It's Tom Steyer.

Credit to Flickr for all photos

A small town girl growing up in rural New York.
She worked her way through law school and became a U.S. Representative.
She worked across PArty Lines to get results for the American People. She's won in districts where farm animals outnumber the amount of Democrats.
As a Senator, she took on Big Pharma and worked to lower Prescription Drug Prices, fix our broken Immigration System, and end Climate Change.
Now she's running for President, to put the interests of the American People First. Tested. Prepared. Dedicated
Kirsten Gillibrand: Fighting for Us has been the work of her life, now she's ready to fight for us as President. Kirsten Gillibrand: Ready to take on Mike Pence. Ready to Win.
I'm Kirsten Gillibrand and I approve this message.

Mike Pence @presidentpence

I would obviously prefer a Republican to be representing IL 3rd, but during his long and distinguished Congressional career, I have worked with Dan Lipinski, who is a Democrat but not a crazy, Steyerist Democrat. He is now being sacked by the socialists in his party because of his bipartisanship and unwillingness to accept the mass massacre of babies or a horrible healthcare plan who is now in a huge death spiral. This only shows how much the Democrat Party is now Steyerist and Socialist, and as far away from moderation as possible.

Citizens for a Progressive Future PAC ad running in IA, NH, NV, SC and CA - Her True Colors

Kirsten Gillibrand. You might have heard that name recently. An ambitious former attorney, who in her youth represented corporations and special interests, such as Philip Morris USA, a Big Tobacco company, defending it from lawsuits by the people and the US Justice Department. She was so good at this, that she was even promoted!

As a Senator, she was very friendly to Wall Street. Yes, very, opposing some crucial pieces of regulation. No wonder a Wall Street CEO said this about her - "She has really worked hard to understand and be supportive and helpful where she could, on a whole variety of issues"

Also, why not look at her House tenure? She was a rightist, Blue Dog Democrat. Or, better said, a Republican. She supported deleting background check information after 24 hours, earning herself an A rating from the NRA. She also opposed efforts to extend state drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants. In 2008, when she was appointed Senator, she quickly flip flopped, becoming from a Republican a liberal Democrat in matter of seconds.

Is this who we really want to nominate? And what are her true colors? Blue or Red?

Citizens for a Progressive Future ad - Another radical, airing in Nevada in all markets

This election is crucial. It is about who can best defeat Mike Pence and bring real change to America. That person is certainly not someone like Kirsten Gillibrand. While a radical rightist in the House, she has turned to a new extreme now - she is a radical leftist.

Gillibrand has backed unpopular and misguided policies endlessly, while giving the impression that she was accomplishing something. While Mike Pence wants to make ICE the highest authority of the land, Kirsten Gillibrand wants to outright abolish it, being the first Senator to back this idea. And while the President endorses banning abortion, Gillibrand wants to end all restrictions.

Is this the best the Democratic Party has to offer? Put up against an extreme Trumpist an extreme leftist?

Wait, what did we just lose? Our chances at winning the election.

Gillibrand Responds to Pence Attacks
Transcript: While the President continues to try to buy the Democratic Primary for his friends, the American People are focused on action. I've been a fighter for Progressive Values like a $15 an hour minimum wage, Medicare for All, and so many other things. We see through the lies.

Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) endorses Stacey Abrams
Image from the Wikimedia Commons

Today the Governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper, gave a resounding endorsement of Stacey Abrams in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ms. Abrams is beginning to try to rack up endorsements to get big wins in southern states that don't find Mr. Steyer or Ms. Gillibrand as candidates that can beat President Pence. Here are some of Mr. Cooper's remarks while endorsing Ms. Abrams:

Quote
When I was elected your governor, we were very divided because of one simple issue. A group of state lawmakers decided to write the most hateful, divisive, and bigoted bill that I have ever seen in my entire time in politics. My predecessor signed the bill, rubbing salt in the wounds of North Carolinians. I made sure that we would repeal that bill in my first term. We got that done, and we've been more united since.

Stacey knows unity. She knows how to bring people together the way we did in North Carolina. I know that when she wins the nomination of our party, she'll bring our party together. Conservative, moderate, progressive, whatever ideology you fall under of our party: you have a home in the Abrams campaign!

Whether it's expanding Obamacare, raising the minimum wage, eliminating cash bail, abolishing the death penalty, requiring paper ballots in all 50 states for all elections, breaking up big-banks, reducing income inequality, ensuring paid family leave, reducing the cost of college, increasing teacher pay, ending Citizens United, reducing carbon emissions, launching initiatives to make sure our youth are eating healthy, banning assault weapons, requiring universal background checks, reducing drug costs, protecting our Dreamers, decriminalizing marijuana, making sure we're not getting into any wasteful wars, raising taxes on the wealthy and lowering taxes on the poor and middle class, protecting our privacy online, or getting fairer trade agreements: Stacey will get it done. I'm happy to give her my full endorsement and I will fight like hell for her to be our next President!

I do not know what the Queen of Abortions is talking about! I have nothing to do with the new ads airing, and the fact that she is accusing me of it is pathetic and paranoid. Maybe someone saw your opportunistic nature and decided to put it into an ad for everyone to see, who knows? SAD!

Citizens for a Progressive Future ad - A from the NRA, airing in Nevada in all markets

The NRA is an organization of the gun lobby, fighting for decades to oppose all kinds of gun control measures which would save lives and make our streets safe. They were the reason for which the horrible 2017 Las Vegas shooting could not be prevented. And do you know who used to be the favorite Congresswoman? Kirsten Gillibrand! While in the House of Representatives, she got an A, and a 100% positive rating from the so-called civil rights organization. She co-sponsored legislation written by Steve King to relax the barely existent federal regulations. No wonder many people called her an NRA poster girl. That is the true record of Kirsten Gillibrand, and for being such a strong opponent of life-saving measures, she has blood on her hands.

Citizens for a Progressive Future ad - Liar, airing in Nevada in all markets

Kirsten Gillibrand, after proudly standing with Steve King fighting FOR gun manufacturers and against you, is now claiming she stood against them. Lying Kirsten would say anything to get elected, but the facts are uncontested. While in the House she got an A from the NRA, and then she flip flopped in the Senate to keep her job. She voted in the Senate against measures she voted for in the House. Flip Flopping Kirsten Gillibrand - just too opportunistic for Nevada, and not right for us.

So pathetic that the conman and fighter against the American people, the Democrat Koch, is still leading the Dem field! He will probably defeat the other failures of candidacies, but that will not be enough for him to escape prison, which is where he belongs!

Stacey’s Plan for Real Corporate Profits Tax

Introduction:
Tax Day will be here sooner than you know it! Chances are, you’ll be paying some federal taxes. Maybe you’re giving a little, maybe a lot; but we’re all paying something for our military, for medical research, for highways and bridges-- the big investments our federal government should be making big investments in to protect our economy and keep us safe.

More than likely, you’ll be paying more for running the federal government than a bunch of big American corporations that made billions of dollars in profits in the last year.

Last year, Amazon reported more than $10 billion in profits and paid zero federal corporate income taxes. Occidental Petroleum reported $4.1 billion in profits and paid zero federal corporate income taxes.

Year after year, some of the biggest corporations in the country make huge profits but pay zero federal corporate income taxes on those profits.

Companies follow established financial accounting rules to calculate the value of the profits they report to shareholders and the public. But they follow a different set of tax accounting rules to calculate the profits they report to the IRS and pay corporate income taxes on. This is not sustainable. From 1988 to 2012, the effective tax rate for American corporations — the rate they actually pay relative to their profits — went down significantly.

This is why I’m proposing a big idea: the Real Corporate Profits Tax. The new tax applies to the profits very large American companies report to their investors — with no loopholes or exemptions. It’ll make our biggest and most profitable corporations pay more and ensure that none of them can ever make billions and pay zero taxes again.

How the Real Corporate Profits Tax Works
Our new tax only applies to companies that report more than $100 million in profits — about the 1200 most profitable firms in the country last year. That first $100 million is left alone, but for every dollar of profit above $100 million, the corporation will pay a 7% tax. Any company profitable enough to hit the Real Corporate Profits Tax will pay that tax in addition to whatever its liability might be under our current corporate tax rules.

That means Amazon would pay $698 million in taxes instead of paying zero. And Occidental Petroleum would pay $280 million in taxes instead of paying zero. This amount of money they’ll be giving in taxes under my plan will seem nothing to them.

It’s a small new tax — but because our richest, biggest corporations are so skilled at minimizing their taxes under our current system, that small new tax will generate big new revenue. According to an estimate from economists, the tax will bring in $1 trillion in revenue over the next ten years — just from the massive profits of the thousand or so richest companies in the country.

You might be wondering: why not just raise the corporate tax rate instead of creating this new tax?

The answer is that our corporate tax code is so littered with loopholes that simply raising the regular corporate tax rate alone is not enough.

We must try to fix our corporate tax code so that it generates more revenue and creates fewer economic distortions that simply reward powerful interests. I have fought to close loopholes that let big corporations pay less. And I strongly opposed the recent Republican tax bill, which has led to a huge drop in the amount of taxes we collect from corporations.

We need corporate tax reform, but we also need to recognize that enormous companies with armies of lawyers and accountants will always try to exploit any deductions and exemptions that remain. To raise the revenue we need — and ensure every corporation pays their fair share — we need a new kind of tax that big companies can’t get around.

That’s what the Real Corporate Profits Tax is. It’s a low rate, and it only applies to the very top of the biggest corporate profits that companies book every year — but there are no loopholes, no exceptions, and nothing to manipulate. If a company tells its investors it made more than $100 million this year,
it’s going to have to pay some taxes.

How the Real Corporate Profits Tax Fixes Some Big Problems
The Real Corporate Profits Tax takes advantage of market incentives to ensure that profitable companies continue to pay their fair share. Corporations will always want to report as low of a profit figure as possible to the IRS. But they want to report as high of a profit figure as possible to investors to drive up the company’s stock price, which in turn drives up bonuses and other compensation for executives. Companies will be hesitant to under-report their profits to investors — which means they won’t be able to game the tax system as much as they can now.

A First Step to a Better Corporate Tax Code
American companies are among the most successful in the world. That success comes from our drive, our ingenuity, and our creativity. It also comes from a broad American infrastructure — roads and bridges, public safety, telecommunications, education, our legal system — that relies on government investment. Too many of our wealthiest companies have lost sight of this, and instead seek to cash in on all the benefits of America while skipping out on the bill. It’s not right — and we cannot afford to let it continue.

The Real Corporate Profits Tax generates more than a trillion dollars in revenue, levels the playing field for small businesses, and is hard to evade. Let’s bring in the revenue we need to invest in opportunity for all Americans. And let’s make this year the last year any company with massive profits pays zero federal taxes.

January 2020 - Bullock Schedule and Strategy
As 2020 begins, the Bullock campaign will continue to commit to the states of New Hampshire and Nevada, and will focus 95% of campaign resources to these states. With an endorsement from the Las Vegas Sun in hand, Bullock will open 2020 in Nevada, and will cover as much ground as possible in the first 10 days of the month. Then, until February 11th, his campaign will shift exclusively to New Hampshire, where he will attempt to surge in the polls and upset Steyer. His campaign will double down on a message of unity and progress, highlighting Bullock's executive experience and also noting that he'll bring an outsider voice to Washington and help clean it up for good.

January 1-2: Campaign and canvass Reno-Carson City area
January 3: Hit as many small Central Nevada towns as possible
January 4-10: Campaign and canvass in the Las Vegas-Henderson area. Rally on the 5th, and town halls on the 7th and 9th (in Henderson and NW Las Vegas). Focus on consolidating more centrist elements of the Democrats, and continue to reach out to minorities in eastern Las Vegas.
January 11: Fly to New Hampshire. Hold rally in Manchester with Sen. Hassan.
January 12-15: Campaign and canvass in Concord area. Hold town hall on the 14th. Go door-to-door in Concord neighborhoods and try to reach as many voters as possible. The door-to-door strategy will continue to be utilized in all New Hampshire campaign stops.
January 16-20: Campaign and canvass in Manchester area. Hold town hall on the 18th.
January 21-24: Campaign and canvass in Nashua, Londonderry, Dover, Portsmouth, and Hampton, holding meet-and-greet/Q and A events in all five cities.
January 25-27: Campaign in western New Hampshire, making ~1 hour stops in numerous small towns, as well as longer stops and events in population centers. Hold town halls in Keene and Lebanon.
January 28-31: Campaign in Northern New Hampshire, making ~1 hour stops in numerous small towns. Hold town halls in Littleton, Lancaster, Conway, and Laconia.

BREAKING NEWS
ABRAMS, BALDWIN WIN DEM DEBATE; JORDAN WINS GOP DEBATE BY DEFAULT AS JONES, PENCE DECLINE TO ATTEND

Ms. Stacey Abrams and Senator Tammy Baldwin were viewed as the biggest winners in the Democratic debate last week, per a Reuters poll conducted shortly thereafter. Ms. Abrams was viewed as the best debater by 47% of respondents, while Senator Baldwin was most approved of by 26%. The rest of the support was largely evenly split among Steyer, Gillibrand, and Bullock, the other three major Democratic attendees.

Conversely, the Republican debate turned into a Jim Jordan rally in Virginia, as the Representative from Ohio's 4th district was the only candidate to attend the debate. As a result, Fox News effectively gave Jordan free reign of the stage, allowing him to better clarify his positions. Many believe this could provide a significant boost to Jordan's campaign less than a month before the Iowa caucuses.
