As someone who is a die hard Lakers fan, Kobe, for all his flaws, was my idle growing up, and it was a thrill to watch him win back to back NBA titles in 2009 and 2010. I'm beyond shook over this.

RIP to his family, as well as the entire Laker organization.

He couldn't even get the number of people on board right. Seems like he just wanted to put his two cents in on what was trending.

I mean, to be fair, that's like...80% of my Instagram story feed right now.  Not that I'm complaining --  you can feel sad even if you've never watched an organized sport in your life.  But major deaths definitely induce a bandwagon effect: "all my friends are posting about it and caring about it, so I feel compelled to say something about it, too."

I'll stop now, though, because this is neither the time nor the place.  How incredibly awful.

Life long Kings fan here. Kobe was an inspiration for basketball players all over the world. I抣l never forget all of the players at the Olympics wanting to meet him even after the US trounced their teams.

Maybe give it rest with one topic.  It's a sports tragedy.

Not defending Trump -- if you're going to tweet about something in your capacity as President, you definitely should be sure that you have your information right.

But this is neither the time nor the place so I'll cut this off now.

It's definitely larger than that.  He was in the upper echelon of celebrities that influence people far outside of sports (and on a global scale).  And the fact that his daughter was also killed just makes it so much worse.  Dreadful.

Probably the biggest national tragedy since Sandy Hook. I had to refrain from posting for the first two hours because I didn't want to believe it was real.

I'm no NBA fan and even less a Lakers fan, but the man is an American icon from coast to coast, and the circumstances all the more tragic - traveling with his daughter, the heir he left to carry his torch. He remains a hero to locals, and "Lower Merion" jerseys are still part of ordinary streetwear here. The legend will only grow with the thoughts of what could have been.

I'm relieved that his faith picked up later in life (per Molly) because 2003 left a sour taste in my mouth when I was still a fan. It seems he left a beautiful family behind, and I know the NBA Superstar fraternity will be there to help them the best they can.
