He didn't create this crisis. If he shows good leadership even if things slow down I don't see the public blaming him for it.

LOL as if Americans actually care about the nuances of why the economy is tanking.

It tanked in 2001 2002 and Bush still got re-elected Einstein

No, they will blame whatever disadvantaged group Trump picks as a scapegoat.

Einstein? Anyway, that election was an exception in that it was hyper-focused on national security, an issue which generally benefits the incumbent. Moreover, the economy was showing signs of recovery by the time of the election.

We haven’t seen an economic slowdown caused by a virus / natural calamity during an election year. So it’s not comparable to past economic slowdowns. It’s a virus produced by nature, occurring first in a market in China. It affected the whole world. It’s not something he could’ve averted in any way.

I don’t think he’ll get the blame. Polls on this issue show that Republicans approve of the way he is handling it while Democrats disapprove (just as expected). So politically, not much here.

Convenient that you left out independents.

Last time I checked, Bush was reelected in 2004, not during a year that the economy tanked.

The country will reward or punish Trump for his response.

Bush didn't create Katrina, but his inept response came to define his legacy.

Independents are definitely going to be the deciding factor in this. If they don't blame Trump for the economy taking, he wins reelection. If they do then it's pretty much over for him.

"It's just the flu" or whatever he said and the embarrassing lack of testing is bad. Like really bad. Imagine calling Katrina a rain storm.

50-50% independents

According to to the poll, 87% of Republicans approve of Trump's handling of coronavirus, 83% of Democrats disapprove, and 50% of independents disapprove

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/nearly-half-of-americans-disapprove-trump-coronavirus-response-poll-2020-3%3famp

Just take the poll that Quinnipiac had the other day: independents broke 37/50 - awful

We can all hope for a miracle, but you'd have to be willfully ignorant to expect anything less than a total clusterf**k out of the Trump response to this.

Trumps ineptitude and poor decision making is going to cost us thousands, tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives that didn't have to go. You think older Americans are stupid and can't see though him? I supported him for his policies, but his idiocy and inability to effectively deal with what shouldn't be a big issue should be enough to swing any informed voter, including you SN.

The economic slowdown is partially responsible by the Trump admins reckless spending and ineptitude, so yeah I don't think Americans are stupid.

Fair or not, I can’t think of a time when an economic slowdown wasn’t blamed on the sitting president and his party. I guess you could make a case for the ‘80s recession, but the economy recovered quickly.

He initially referred to it as a "hoax."
And in that speech he gave when he visited India, the Orange Imbecile said that it's "a problem that's going to go away."
Does that sound like good leadership to you, regarding what has now turned into a world-wide pandemic?

He shouldn't worry about the stocks. Those will go back up again once the virus is resolved. He needs to prevent it from spreading and hopefully shut it down before summer's end. If he is able to do that, it is almost guaranteed re-election.

Probably. If schools and businesses re-open by April, the economy will begin to recover.

THANK YOU.
So many people seem to think that ignoring the virus will somehow help the economy!

In hindsight, it looks as though China might get some blame on this one.

Their self-focus on keeping it quiet in the initial stages actually made this a lot worse than it needed to be.

It put back the international response by about 3 weeks, and allowed people to travel abroad to Australia, Italy and Iran before those countries could have possibly responded.

He has an opportunity to actually look Presidential for once, but he's already failing.

1) He started off by pretending this was no big deal.  Those clips are going to haunt him.

2) I don't think any of us know if the administration as a whole has been incompetent in terms of testing kits and response, etc., but he hasn't looked serious enough about it.  He basically deferred this to Pence.  That doesn't look like leadership.

3) This is yet one more instance where he seems to focus on punishing Europe, our greatest allies, above all else.  No travel to the US from Europe for 30 days?  That's ridiculous.  There's already over 1,000 cases here.

4) Whether he is blamed or not, this is tanking the economy, which was his one good talking point.  Sure he's not really to blame for that, but it's definitely hurting his re-election chances profoundly.

He has to stop the spread this will result in better economic news later on . The europe move was bold and necessary they have a bigger issue there than here.

It would only have been "bold" if he had included the UK. There was no rational reason to exclude the UK and include a number of continental countries with far fewer cases, and it undermines the purpose since people from other European countries can just travel via the UK (a major airline hub).
