To make everything even more ridiculous, Merkel has just cancelled the Easter lockdown again due to widespread criticism over unclear and unspecific rules and scepticism regarding the lockdown's benefit. Also, her own interior minister Horst Seehofer had joined the churches in publicly criticizing that religious communities had been asked to forego Easter services this year.

Merkel did a Johnson, you could even say.

(though she also said it was her own fault, which is very much not him)

Portugal: 200 people called to be vaccinated at the same hour in Carnaxide, Lisbon, creating long lines that lasted for hours.

Quote
Vaccination against covid-19 caused great confusion at a post in Carnaxide. Where about 200 people were called at the same time.

Quote
The vaccination against covid-19 this Tuesday generated great confusion in a post in Carnaxide. Long lines were formed, with hundreds of elderly people outside the sports hall Carlos Queiroz waiting for hours, in the sun and standing.

The confusion continued throughout the morning and employees of the Oeiras City Council, responsible for logistics, ended up distributing water and chairs to the elderly.

The mayor of Oeiras, Isaltino Morais, speaking to SIC on the spot, explained that it was a computer error that mobilized dozens of people who were going to receive the vaccination at the same time.

The executive director of the Grouping of Health Centers Lisboa Ocidental and Oeiras, Rafic Ali Nordin, guaranteed that this situation "will not happen again" on Thursday.

In order to minimize the problem, the vaccination process started to happen manually and more vaccination stations were opened.

And 29 million doses of AstraZeneca's vaccine casually turn up in an Italian warehouse where they were destined for Great Britain, Belgium, Covax participants, the EU, nobody really seems to be able to agree. All the more curious given the doses were apparently produced in a Dutch factory that has not yet been approved to produce vaccines for the European market. According the EU because AZ haven't applied for it.

This would be comical if it weren't for the fact that, you know, people are dying.

It doesn't need EU bureaucracy to ruin AstraZeneca's reputation, they do it themselves.

So credit where credit is due. There is much to criticize about Merkel on various political issues, but I give her credit for taking back the proposal to make Thursday next week a "quit day" and apologizing to the public. I think her apology is sincere. Whether she should ask for a new confidence vote in the Bundestag is another question, though, but she already rejected the calls from opposition parties.

Some truth in this, but you can't help compare some of the stick they get to Sanofi getting off almost criticism free despite *not yet producing any usable vaccines at all*.

Ah, my home state is set to become Germany's experimental lab model region for loosening Covid restrictions. Our Governor made a complete U-turn and announced that after Easter, restaurants can open outdoors, the closing of cinemas, gyms and theaters will be lifted. Contact restrictions will be widened to 10 people and sports outdoors is gonna be possible too. Everything requires a negative quick test. Shops have opened recently as well due to a court ruling.

The conditions for this are not the worst, as Saarland has relatively high vaccination and low 7 day incidence rates (70.8 compared to 113 nationwide), in spite of bordering the high incidence area of Département Moselle. Still, it is a risky step and was completely unexpected, as our Governor usually used to copy Bavaria's strict regulations (and failed several times, as courts overruled his executive orders several times).

Still, I am extremely dissatisfied in the state government's handling of the situation of universities. 10 out of 16 states have increased the regular study time by 2 semesters and 4 more by 1, but my state simply hasn't done anything but an announcement. This is crucial for students such as me who either get federal study loans or scholarships bound to their rules. As a vast majority of students is set to study longer, they will face financial problems by September or so, including me, if the increase doesn't come soon. Smiley

I hope this new variant currently circulating in parts of India isn't spelling trouble on the horizon. It's apparently a combination of the UK and South African mutation and vaccines seem less effective here. While vaccines can quickly be "updated" for new variants according to Biontech/Pfitzer, the whole process of vaccinations would have to start all over again. There needs to be more data on this one, but definitely worth keeping an eye upon.

This weekend and the next one, more than 80,000 teachers and school staff to be vaccinated:

Quote
Throughout the country there are schools or pavilions adapted to the vaccination process.

Quote
In total, about 78,700 teachers and staff from pre-school, first cycle and also from the so-called "Full-Time School", which reopened last week, covering the sectors between Saturday and Sunday, are included in this first phase. public and private.

On Wednesday, teachers and non-teachers started receiving the call, via SMS, to receive the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and had a day to answer whether or not they want to be vaccinated. If they have not done so or refuse this vaccine, they lose priority in vaccination.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Education ensured that they would not lose their place if, for any reason, they had not been contacted, advising them to notify the direction of the respective educational establishment, so that the school sends the information to the regional service directorate , "in order to draw up a list and frame the situation (s) in a future vaccination phase".

The vaccination process will take place in three ways: in municipalities where the group of professionals to be vaccinated is less than 250 people, it will be in health centers, in those where vaccination is expected between 250 and 500 people, the process will be carried out in schools and in locations with more than 500 people, the choice fell to Covid Vaccination Centers.

On the first day, the vaccination of teachers will be accompanied by the Prime Minister, António Costa, who will be accompanied by the Minister of Education, Tiago Brandão Rodrigues, at 10:30 in Odivelas.
(...)
After this first phase, the vaccination process for education professionals will continue progressively during the month of April, following the process of lockdown end.

According to the planning of the task-force, professionals from the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and secondary education begin to be vaccinated on the weekend of April 10 and 11, and the process can be prolonged. for more weekends if need be.

In total, the task force plans to vaccinate about 280,000 teachers and non-teaching staff from day care centers to secondary education.

On March 10, the Directorate-General for Health included in the priority groups of phase 1 for the vaccine against covid-19 teachers and non-teaching staff, from the public and private sectors.
(...)
Quote
In some vaccination centers, occasional problems of organization or even of registration capacity were registered. The secretary-general of Fenprof was in one of these vaccination posts, in Coimbra. Mário Nogueira applauded the Government's measure, but criticized the delay with which it is being implemented.

Well, the UK's prioritizing first doses has clearly been paying off compared to the US, France, Germany, and so on.

Looks like another hard lockdown in Germany is just around the corner, as daily new cases are around 20k for a couple of days now. Precautionary I got another haircut on Friday just three weeks after the previous one.

Germany now the most negative of all polled countries towards it virus handling. RKI warns of 100k+ cases per day and health care system overload in April, Spahn says we need "massive countermeasures". However, even if there were the political will among state leaders (there isn't, despite Merkels attempts to force them yesterday), we've already been in basically a hard-ish lockdown for three months. Shops are mostly closed, Restaurants and culture is closed, Schools depend on the State but at least here in BW are closed except for the lowest years. I don't think any neighboring country except perhaps Czechia has harsher measures, so there really isn't that much of a brake to pull. Someone said were are like a country entering a recession with interest rates already at zero. Political trust is simply necessary for people to adhere to the restrictions. Or fear perhaps, if the cases keep rising.

Germany's permanent vaccination commission has recommended AstraZeneca no longer be used for people under the age of 60.

Public communication relating to AstraZeneca is a giant debacle in Germany and across the EU. After more thrombosis cases among younger women in Germany, this vaccine is now only recommended for seniors. A few months back, the opposite was the case when some news outlets claimed it was not effective among older people, which was not true. There was just not enough data.

Anyway, I hope to get one of the other vaccines once I'm eligible in a couple of months. Preferably Johnson & Johnson since it's just one shot (and would be kinda ironic for the name).

Well, as a total number it's actually not that many. There were 31 cases reported in Germany so far. Nine of them died. Almost exclusively women under the age of 60. However, I think it's the right decision to pause AstraZeneca for them as a precautionary step even though there is no final confirmation the thrombosis were actually caused by the vaccine (but it's likely). If the government lets this go and more cases occur, they would be in much bigger trouble. It's just the public communication that was every unfortunate here for a while, to put it mildly.
