Puerto Rico has had a pretty hellish/fascinating 4 years. It has gone from a debt crisis to student protests, to a devastating hurricane, to Telegramgate (and the resignation of dreamy governor Ricky Roselló), and most recently earthquakes on the eastern side of the island. Despite this, the gubernatorial race has gotten very little attention from the English-speaking press (and Atlas). Polling is pretty spotty, but the few that I could find indicate that the pro-statehood and slightly more GOP-oriented PNP is leading! (Although the field is VERY splintered.)

Can someone who more familiar with Puerto Rican politics tell me how it is possible that the party of Ricky Roselló is ahead in the polls? Is the PPD (soberanista, more D-leaning) really that corrupt/inept/disliked?
