. . . on the night of the caucuses.

On the night of the caucuses in 2012, Mitt Romney was declared the winner by 8 votes.  This win established Romney as the frontrunner, and it was a downer for Santorum, who was now, merely a close second.

Two weeks later, it was determined that Santorum actually won Iowa by 34 votes.

Would Santorum have done better, and possibly won the nomination, had he been announced the winner of Iowa the night of the caucuses, and gotten all the media buzz that would have generated?  Would he have come significantly closer to the nomination?  Might he have won?  Might he have been selected VP had this happened, instead of Paul Ryan?

I wouldn’t see a win as a downer for someone that surge to that place by fifteen points in the last two weeks a downer by any means
