Which New York suburban character would you rather live on, Staten Island, or Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk)

Both are near New York City, but culturally different.

If I'm picking any island, it's Manhattan (sane option)

I agree with this, but with the two options given, Long Island is still not a bad choice when the only alternative is Staten Island.

Long Island has a checkered past of postwar suburban housing discrimination on to this day:

I've been to Manhattan and Staten Island but not to Long Island (except for JFK) so I don't know

Long Island has nice things. Staten Island has sh**tty (or rather, sh**ttier) commutes.

That would depend entirely on where in each one.

If I had to live in that area of New York, I'd choose Long Island over Staten.  They seem to have nicer communities there.
