One reason I hadn't commented on this very interesting matchup yet is that I couldn't decide how it would go. And I still can't. It would doubtless be as insanely close as the real-life 1876, 1880, and 1884 elections were, and like them, the outcome would probably hinge on who won New York.

Was an electoral college tie possible in 1876?

Duh. Can't believe I asked that last question. Maybe we could say that a third-party candidate got an electoral vote somewhere, somehow, and it wound up 184-184.
