Yes, but experience shows that just ignoring the populist right often doesn't work either.

Its not the left/liberals attacking them per se that is the problem - rather that they too often do so in a way that doesn't resonate with those who are the target audience for Ventura et al.
There's a reason why it was the center-right candidates, Marcelo and Tiago Mayan, and you can also add Tino de Rans, that were the few candidates able to put Ventura on defense and off guard. The left candidates, in my view, entered in this fight using the most stupid argument: ilegalize CHEGA. Of course that would not work and it was clear in the debates that the left candidates, especially Marisa Matias, were failing spectacularly in putting Ventura in his place. Even Ana Gomes, who has a very good anti-corruption record, failed to throw to Ventura's face all of his contradictions surrounding corruption and went to talk about CHEGA being illegal and so on. It didn't work and it doesn't work.

Ventura is not like Abascal or Le Pen. Like them or loathe them, they believe in what they say, and that's not the case with Ventura. He's an actor playing a kind of rhetoric that isn't his real beliefs and the center-right candidates understood that and that was visible in the debates.

PM Q&A debate in Parliament: Costa now admits he could close down schools if the UK variant becomes dominant:

Quote
António Costa admits closing schools if English strain becomes dominant

PM António Costa came to Parliament, today, in the wake of the new measures for the 2nd lockdown, which are being classified as too little and too late. Costa was confronted by the PSD which accused the PM of creating a "make-believe lockdown" rather than a real one and that he isn't doing his job. The PSD pressed for school closing and more strict and rigorous lockdown. Costa responded said he would do everything in his power to keep schools open, but recognized that if the situation becomes even worse and the English strain becomes dominates, he would close schools. CDS also, like the PSD, pressed for a more harder lockdown and asked the PM what would he have done during Christmas if he had the current data. The PM said that if he had known what was coming, he wouldn't had opened and alleviate the then restrictions, adding he has full conscience of what he did and accepts full responsibility.

The left parties, BE and CDU, accused the rightwing parties of being hypocrites by attacking the government and that no one has a miracle solution for the current situation. BE pressed the government to force the private sector to help the NHS, but Costa said that for the moment that isn't necessary. CDU, mainly PCP, demanded that the government should buy vaccines outside the EU plan, an idea Costa rejected by saying that it would be dangerous.

Also, a poll released by RTP shows that a majority of voters want schools to close (54%), while 38% are against. 77% want a lockdown equal to the one in March/April and voters are deeply divided in the idea of postponing the Presidential elections (which is impossible right now): 47% against, 46% in favour.

2021 Presidential elections: Early voting for isolated/infected voters started but some complicated issues have emerged.

Quote
Confined people who asked for early voting were not at home to vote

Early voting for voters isolated/infected or in nursing homes started today with several election official going to each voters houses to collect ballots. Almost 13,000 voters registered to vote this way, a number well bellow expectations. But, some worrying situations are occurring. The chairman of the municipalities association, PS Mayor of Coimbra Manuel Machado, said that election workers are finding out that several voters that registered because they were infected or isolated, weren't in their homes. Mr Machado said that election officials report to the police these situations, but he didn't said a precise number of cases only said that the number is well above what was expected.

Early voting for overseas voters also ended and a record 5,400 voters cast an early ballot. This number is higher than the early votes cast overseas in the 2019 elections, and almost 40% of the total ballots cast overseas in the 2016 presidential election. During 23 and 24 January, polling stations for overseas voters will be open in 115 Portuguese consulates/embassies in 73 different countries. However, the turnout rate will still be massively low as there are more than 1.4 million registered voters overseas.

2021 Presidential election: Election researchers predict an 60-70% abstention rate.

Quote
Presidentials. Researchers admit record abstention, between 60% and 70%

The turnout rate for next Sunday's Presidential election is becoming a real source of worry for the campaigns, many election researchers and also pollesters. A "perfect storm" could put the turnout rate in this Presidential election in the lowest level ever. A combination of fear of infection because of the pandemic, the forgone conclusion result and voters disinterest in politics could led to a record abstention rate. According to election researchers, all reelection elections since 1991, 1991, 2001 and 2011, have seen a 10% drop in turnout rates creating an "iô-iô" trend. Plus, the fact that more than 1 million voters are registered, now, overseas will also force an abstention rate increase. All of this factors make it difficult to predict the impact in the final election results.

Campaign update:

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa campaigned in Lisbon and said that the closure of schools will be pondered:

Quote
Marcelo announces that school closings will be considered
During a campaign event in an University in Lisbon, Marcelo said the the closure of schools will be considered and he also suggest that he might suspend his campaign in the pandemic situation in Portugal gets even worse.

Ana Gomes warns that Marcelo wants to bring back the right to power at the same time many socialists are announcing their support for Marcelo:

Quote
Ana Gomes is not “surprised” by the list of socialists who support Marcelo. "I know I disturb the centrão of interests"
Ana Gomes is warning that President Marcelo, if reelected, will bring back the right to power and that she doesn't conceive that the socialists are voting for the candidate of the right. She added that unlike Marcelo, she isn't aligned with the "centrão" of special interests.

André Ventura received by the loudest protests against him in Coimbra city:

Quote
André Ventura is received by a demonstration when leaving the rally in Coimbra
Ventura was once again received by protests in Coimbra city, while he was visiting the tomb of King Afonso Henriques (1143-1185). As he was living the church, a loud protest erupted. Ventura then said that he has proof that many of this protests are being financed by the BE and will file a complaint against them. BE is denying vehemently the charges.

João Ferreira campaigned in Serpa, Beja district:

João Ferreira spent the day on Beja district, a PCP stronghold, where he talked to small businesses and supported the idea of scraping the 2013 local reform that merged several parishes.

Marisa Matias held another virtual rally and received the support of Brazilian singer Chico Buarque:

Marisa Matias held another virtual rally where she received the support of several people like Pilar del Rio, José Saramago widow. She also received earlier in the week the support of Brazilian singer Chico Buarque.

The other candidates have done no public campaigning or are conducting a digital campaign like Tino de Rans and Tiago Mayan

CESOP–UCP poll for RTP/Público newspaper:

Vote share %:

63% Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (-5)
14% Ana Gomes (+1)
10% André Ventura (+2)
  5% João Ferreira (nc)
  3% Marisa Matias (-2)
  3% Tiago Mayan Gonçalves (+2)
  2% Tino de Rans (new)

Poll conducted between 11 and 14 January 2021. Polled 2,001 voters. MoE of 2.20%.

Interesting note by the polling company:
Quote
CESOP leaves a note that it is not possible to predict a value for abstention from these responses.

The sample was also asked about "the fear of voting". They answered that they had “no fear” 57%, “little fear” 8%, “some fear” 24% and “very fear” 9%.

CESOP takes this data to make a new estimate of votes, stating that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is "the candidate most affected by the 'fear of voting' [not indicating however] that victory in the first round is at risk".

On the other hand, “the distance of 4 percentage points between AG [Ana Gomes] and AV [André Ventura] drops to 2 percentage points among people without fear. Bearing in mind the difficult week foreseen in Portuguese hospitals, it cannot be excluded that the difference between AG and AV may decrease or even turn. Of course, with the opposite sign, we could to see a concentration of votes on the left with benefit for AG and loss for MM [Marisa Matias] and JF [João Ferreira] ”.

Final early voting numbers: 80.16% of voters who registered to vote early, cast a ballot.

Of the 246,880 voters that registered to vote early last Sunday, 197,903 voters, 80.16%, did so. Long lines because of few polling stations occurred all across the country and some voters gave up in voting last Sunday. They can still vote this Sunday, January 24. Overall, around 215,000 ballots have been already cast for the 2021 Presidential election, if you add the early voting for prisoners, hospitalized voters, isolated/infected voters and voters overall.

President Marcelo dramatizes the call to vote: "If abstention is at 70%, a 2nd round is probable".

Quote
Videos - Marcelo points to second round as probable if abstention in the Presidential election reaches 70%

President Marcelo is dramatizing the prospect of a 2nd round. Talking to students in a school in Lisbon, the President said the if the abstention rate reaches 70%, a 2nd round is almost inevitable as a high abstention rate punishes the most those candidate who have the highest voting intention, meaning, President Marcelo himself. Marcelo also said he's responsible for everything good of bad that happens in the Covid-19 fight, because at the end of the day his signature is always needed. The current pandemic situation in Portugal is very bad, with more than 10,000 new cases and 200 deaths daily, which is making many pundits and analysts wonder how will the Sunday elections plays out.

Woman heckled President Marcelo during his campaign stop in Porto city:

A woman put President Marcelo in an uncomfortable situation this morning in Porto city. The woman, very angry towards Marcelo, took off her mask while talking with the President even though Marcelo repeatedly asked the woman to put her mask back on. The woman said that what happened in the US two weeks ago with the invasion of the Capitol, should happen in Portugal as Parliament is full of "thieves" and they should be thrown out. She pressed on to say she voted for Marcelo in 2016, but now she's voting for Ana Gomes because she's a great woman. She also said that Marcelo should retire because he's passed his age.

The story of the U-turn regarding schools:

Quote
The film of the U-turn that led to the closure of schools (with a push from Marcelo)

Since last week, the idea of closing schools to prevent more infections of Covid has been defended by many. In the meeting with specialists, last week, the idea was defended by many specialists but rejected by a few. The government decided to maintain schools open as closing them would do much more harm to students learning than good. Plus, the view was that schools weren't the main focus or one of the most dangerous places of Covid spreading. On the other hand, the opposition parties, mainly the PSD, said that schools should be closed for students above 12 years old. The government rejected the idea and the PM said, last Thursday that closing schools would "destroy a generation". The debate dragged on during the weekend as the Covid numbers got worse and worse. By Monday, more and more support was growing for schools closures, but Costa decided still to not close schools. But, the PM soon changed his tone. The next day, in Parliament, Costa publicly admitted he would consider closing schools if necessary. By Wednesday, it was confusion. During the morning the Health secretary said to reporters that there was a big consensus to maintain schools open, but a few hours later, President Marcelo said that he talked, by phone, with Costa and that a decision about closing schools would happen in the next few hours. At the same time, the PSD publicly asks the government to close schools quickly. The PS attacks the PSD for using the pandemic for political reasons, but shortly after that, the Health minister, Marta Temido, in an interview to RTP, said that school closures were a real possibility. In the early hours of the morning, the decision was made, schools would be closed.

A very dramatic and chaotic 24 hours in the government.

Violence in André Ventura's rally in Setúbal city. Ventura was hit with objects thrown by protesters:

André Ventura's campaign event in Setúbal city ended in violence with protesters throwing several objects towards Ventura and some seem to have hit the candidate. He was rushed to his car by security. Riot police was on the campaign site and tried to create a security area but tensions escalated between the police and protesters and one protester was arested by the police. The arrest created more clashes between the police and protesters with police using force and pepper sprays to disperse the protesters. It's still unclear if Ventura was injured.

2021 Presidential elections: Candidates condemn the attack against Ventura

Quote
Presidential candidates condemn violent protest against Ventura

At least 3 candidates, Ana Gomes, Marisa Matias and Tiago Mayan have condemn the attack on André Ventura during a campaign event in Setúbal city. Ana Gomes reacted by saying, on twitter, that she condemns violence and no one should act in her behalf:
Quote
I am against any kind of violent protest against any candidate. No one acts violently on my behalf

Marisa Matias also recated by saying that hate cannot be defeated with violence and it can only be defeated throw "democratic struggle":
Quote
Hate is not defeated with violence. We are a better country than the extreme right candidate and we will be able to win it in the democratic struggle

Tiago Mayan Gonçalves wrote, also on twitter, that he condemns any violent act or threat against anyone:
Quote
I totally condemn any form of violence, threat or coercion, wherever it comes from, address candidates, journalists or any other citizens

PSD leader, Rui Rio, also reacted to the incident. In a press conference, Mr Rio also condemned the violence and thanked the police for restoring order and doing the right thing.

Thanks, Portuguese Antifa, for your attempt to create sympathy for Ventura. Very smart strategy indeed!

It seems he was hit by a box of tablets and got a little bruise of his leg, maybe on entering his car so rapidly. But, yeah, all of this doesn't look good neither do the clashes afterwards with the police.

Curiously, in 1986, during this same period of the campaign, Mário Soares was also hit with objects but in this case some people got really injured. This incident, called the Marinha Grande incident, is believed to have propelled Soares to 2nd place in the 1st round, and then he won the 2nd round by a 51% to 49% against Freitas do Amaral. Of course, Ventura is no Soares, obviously, but still it's an interesting curiosity.

Will he have some kind of election "sympathy" bump? Don't know honestly, the circumstances of this election are so complicated that it's very difficult to predict. There will probably be a flood of polls in the next few hours, also.

Other headlines from today, beyond the Presidential election:

António Costa caught in wiretaps surrounding the "Hydrogen case" Supreme Court President wants to destroy the tapes but the DA office wants them to be saved.

Quote
António Costa caught up in the hydrogen case

Expresso newspaper reports, today, that the DA office has caught PM António Costa in wiretaps surrounding the "Hydrogen case". The focus of the wiretaps was the current Environment minister. Other cabinets ministers were also heard in the tapes. The tapes where the PM was in were analysed by the President of the Supreme Court, Justice António Piçarra, who ordered the destruction of the tapes. However, the DA office opposed this decision and now a decision will be made by another judge. The "Hydrogen case" is an investigation surrounding possible corrupt deals regarding the construction of hydrogen plants in Sines. The environment minister and his secretary are suspected of favouring a consortium led by Energies of Portugal (EDP) in this multi million dollar project. However, until now, no one has been accused. The office of the PM was unaware of the tapes, but, to Expresso newspaper, they "thanked the info".

Also, the mayor of Reguengos de Monsaraz, Évora, has taken the Covid vaccine even though he isn't from any priority group:

Quote
Mayor of Reguengos de Monsaraz took a vaccine for Covid-19 without belonging to any priority group

Another controversy surrounding Reguengos de Monsaraz. After the village made headlines for a massive outbrake, in July, in a nursing home, that revealed bad management, the tiny Alentejo village in again in the headlines. The mayor of the village, José Calixto from the PS, took the Covid vaccine even though he isn't part of any priority group. According to the media, Mr Calisto got the vaccine because he's chairman of the same nursing home that was accused of bad management during last summer's outbrake. Mr Calisto wrote on social media that he should be in a "priority group" because of his position in the nursing home. However, the national coordinator of the Covid-19 vaccine, Francisco Ramos, has already said that this case is an improper use of the vaccine and that the mayor should not have been vaccinated.

2021 Presidential elections: Government admits they are having difficulty in opening polling stations in at least 15 municipalities.

Quote
Government admits problems in forming polling stations in 15 municipalities

The government is having difficulty in forming and then opening polling stations for Sunday's election because of the pandemic. Many poll workers have become infected, some isolated and others are just afraid of being all day in polling stations. In at least 15 municipalities, undisclosed however, there are problems in opening polling stations. Many city halls also report they are having difficulty in finding poll workers for election day, and some city halls are actually testing poll workers before Sunday. The issue is quite normal in every election, although in much less extent, but this time is worse because, of course, of the pandemic and the fact that the number polling stations will grow considerably compared with previous elections. The plan is to open more than 12,000 polling stations across the country, which will have more than 65,000 polling workers.

The campaign is over and tomorrow will be that "medieval" practice called reflection day. The candidates spent the last hours of the campaign appealing for voters to turnout to vote next Sunday:

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa:

Quote
Presidentials 2021: Marcelo dramatizes election: “This is a decisive moment”

President Marcelo spent the last day of the campaign in his grandmother parish in Cabeceiras de Basto. Marcelo visited a library named after him, pictured above, and there he gave a speech where he stressed the "decisive moment" these elections occur and that voting is very important next Sunday.

Ana Gomes:

Quote
With Manoel Baptista, my representative to Alto Minho, and supporters of JS #VianadoCastelo, I visited Associação Casulo Abrigo today that supports homeless people. Many affected by dementia. Sad that State does not care to find solutions and later to support those who seek to find them.
Ana Gomes spent the day in Viana do Castelo where he visited a series of charity institutes. During the evening she did a virtual rally where she asked for a unity of the left and she attacked President Marcelo for downplaying André Ventura.

André Ventura:

Voting has begun for voters overseas. Today and tomorrow, overseas voters can cast a ballot in 177 polling stations located in Portuguese consulates and embassies across the world. A total of 1,550,063 voters are registered overseas, and of these around 5,400 voters voted early, just 0.35% of the registered voters overseas. Overseas turnout is expected to be very, very low, around 1-3%, as there is no mail voting in this election, unlike the general elections, and voters have to go personally to embassies and consulates in order to vote.

A bit of topic, but this is the hilarious cover, IMO, of Inimigo Público (Public Enemy) newspaper, a satirical weekly newspaper within Público newspaper, about the 2021 Presidential elections:
