I love how neckbeards are so triggered by it. Actually CBS was too and Charles Schultz had to fight to keep the message of the true meaning if Christmas in it.

Massive Freedom Cartoon. I wasn't aware there were complaints about it. Somebody said to Schulz after it aired that "they'll be watching this for a hundred years", and we're more than halfway there.

Even in spite of the overtly religious speech by Linus, it's cute and impossible to hate.

As usual, I hate that which is impossible to hate. I could never enjoy Peanuts. It's not funny and I find its humor repetitive and bland.

I can understand all that. But with how cynical I have become in my adulthood, I tend to be a real sucker for anything that reminds me of childhood innocence. I think that's true of many actually, it's why Mr. Rogers is going through a renaissance-a Rogerssance.

That speech was an essential part of the special as it snarked in that inimitable Peanuts manner on the commercial excesses of modern Christmas celebrations. The sad part is that Christmas has become even more commercial since the special was made.

That is one of the most enduring and beloved scenes in film history, and is the reason why the film has become such a classic. While Christmas is a holiday observed secularly (and celebrated commercially), the point is to remind us of its Christian origins, and of the values it represents. Many other Christmas movies have vague messages of love, kindness, or even Nativity scenes, but few provide us with such an unvarnished reminder of why we celebrate Christmas in the first place. After all, we should be loving and kind and generous all year, and Christmas is just a day when we celebrate the birth of those values.

I get it. It just seems to come out of nowhere to me. When I first watched it I remember being surprised at that. You don't usually see religion included in children's shows.

Also the Christian origin of Christmas is debatable. The holiday is kind of a weird amalgamation of both Christian and pagan traditions.

What's the controversy over it? Wikipedia doesn't mention any.

Linus makes a religious speech about the meaning of Christmas and some snowflakes got offended, even back in the mid '60s

Freedom cartoon, but it's a shame that people still view the holiday as being only about gift giving. The message got lost somehow.

edit: btw I am a big Peanuts fan

As is actually-existing Christianity in general. Incorporating ritual practices that aren't of Second Temple Jewish origin doesn't make something non-Christian.

There is approximately zero evidence of 'pagan traditions' being incorporated into Christmas. No, not even the trees. German, Protestant, 16th century.

Really? I thought it was the blatant product placement of Coke that got everyone talking.
