Migrants from North of Africa that landed in the Algarve will be expelled from Portugal:

Quote
Migrants who landed in the Algarve will be installed in temporary centers and later expelled from Portugal

Quote
The 22 migrants from North Africa, detected off Quarteira, Faro district, will be transported to temporary settlement centers overnight, the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) said on Tuesday.

In a statement, SEF clarifies that the migrants, all of whom were male, were present at the Judicial Court of Loulé, on Tuesday, "having been subjected to the installation coercion measure in the installation coercion measure was applied to them in a Temporary Installation Center (CIT) for removal from national territory within the scope of the expulsion process for irregular entry and stay "in Portugal.

The Foreigners and Borders Service adds that the 22 migrants will be installed, "this evening", at the CIT at the Santo António Housing Unit, in Porto, in the Space Equated to the Temporary Installation Center (EECIT) at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, also in Porto, and the EECIT at Faro airport.

(...)

However, some authorities are worried that a new illegal migration route could be forming in Portugal, but the Interior minister rejects the idea as it's not comparable the 7,500 illegal migrants in the shores of Spain with the just 48 in Portugal's shores, since last December.

Quote
They leave Morocco and arrive in the Algarve: is there a new illegal migration route? "It depends on several factors, including the reaction of Portugal"

Quote
Four different groups of Moroccan men have landed on the Algarve coast since December - 48 people have left El Jadida, not far from Casablanca, Morocco. What happened to them? Some have disappeared, others will be deported, only one - a minor - had his asylum application accepted by the Portuguese government. The last 22 men who arrived earlier this week did not ask for international protection, contrary to what had always happened before.

Dolphins return to the Tagus river in Lisbon as pollution and boat traffic drops:

Quote
Group of dolphins returns to the Tagus River in Lisbon

Quote
Several dolphins were photographed and filmed swimming in the Tagus river, next to the 25 de Abril bridge, in an image that had not been seen for some time.

The images were shared by the website Terra Incógnita, a sailing school in the capital area.

According to the Terra Incógnita website, this was the sixth consecutive day that it was possible to spot dolphins in the area.

In the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tagus estuary has had much less movement of boats, and this gives rise to the appearance of animals that are not normally seen very often.

Well, this happened and shows the state of the railways in Portugal:

Quote
CP: Train runs out of diesel 1700 meters from the station

Quote
The train that daily leaves Espinho at 1:30 pm and should have arrived at 2:32 pm in Oliveira de Azeméis station, stopped in the middle of the road, due to lack of fuel, when 1700 meters were left to reach the destination.

A CP supply truck would eventually come to the site to fill the railcar's tanks to continue the journey. The delay, however, was an hour.

This is not the first time that one of the trains on the Vouga line runs out of fuel. In April of this year, a train that was due to leave Aveiro for Sernada de Vouga did not come out because the driver realized that it had not been filled with diesel, and the train was suppressed.

EDP, Energies of Portugal, chairman suspended from office by judge orders:

Quote
The ruling was reported by news website ECO earlier on Monday.

Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, currently chief financial officer of EDP, will take over as interim CEO while Mexia is suspended, according an EDP statement published by Portugal’s market regulator CMVM.

Portugal’s public prosecutor indicted Mexia and EDP Renovaveis (EDPR.LS) CEO Joao Manso Neto three years ago on suspicion of corruption in a case that involved former Portuguese Economy Minister Manuel Pinho in 2007. EDP, the two executives and Pinho have always denied any wrongdoing.

(...)

The public prosecutor has alleged that Pinho personally benefited when he approved a scheme to compensate EDP for the early end of fixed multi-annual Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), and a 25-year extension of 27 dam concessions without public tender.

The public prosecutor has said EDP subsequently sponsored a renewable energy course at a major U.S. university, taught by Pinho, as a reward.

In a court document seen by Reuters, Mexia and Manso Neto rejected the prosecutor’s claims, calling them “fictional narrative” and said the proposed suspension was “illegal” as a manager can only be dismissed by shareholders.

Young Dutch tourists in Albufeira, Algarve, criticize the police force against them:

Quote
“The police are out of control”: Dutch tourists complain about the police charge in Albufeira

Quote
In Albufeira, spirits began to calm. The muscular attitude of the authorities reduced the number of young Dutch people on the streets of Oura, who seem to have opted for private parties.

Meanwhile, the news of some police charges about students on vacation has reached the Netherlands and parents are asking young people to return home.

Controversy in Portugal: Owner of brothel reveals the name of the judge who asked for oral sex while hearing depositions of minors.

Quote
Brothel owner reveals name of Mafra judge who asked for oral sex while listening to reports of minors

Quote
Ana Loureiro, the head of a brothel and one of the biggest defenders of the legalization of prostitution in Portugal, revealed this Thursday, July 9, at the Lisbon Court of Appeal, the identity of the judge who she accused of receiving sexual services while watching videos of children reporting sexual abuse they had suffered.

The judge in question will be Joaquim Manuel Silva, placed in the Family and Minors Court of the Court of Mafra, where he gained notoriety for working to defend the interests of minors in cases of parental regulation - having even participated in several televised debates on the topic .

During the time that she was heard by the court, Ana Loureiro said that the magistrate used the services of one of the companions who works with her in her alternate home. And that the latter, while listening to the reports of the minors he followed in each case, asked for oral sex.

(...)

The seriousness of the revelations was enough for the Assembly of the Republic to send a letter to the Attorney General's Office, writes the newspaper "Observador". The idea is to inform the Public Ministry of "affirmations of an alleged knowledge of facts that indicate practices that constitute public crimes."

Revolt in Santo Tirso as a wildfire destroys an illegal kennel killing more than 70 dogs:

Quote
Hundreds of people gather in vigil to pay homage to animals killed in Santo Tirso fire

Quote
Animal rights: Number of animals killed in Santo Tirso rises to 73

Last weekend, a massive wildfire in the outskirts of Porto, between Valongo and Santo Tirso, lasted for some days and destroyed an illegal kennel located in the woods. Police is being accused of letting the dogs die but police forces already released a statement saying that the violence of the fire prevented any rescue of the animals, however it seems to contradict an earlier statement by the police, on Monday, saying that the police rescued, with success, the majority of the dogs. Nonetheless, many people are revolted by the situation as the illegal kennel was known for several years and many gather in a vigil in Santo Tirso's main square to honour the animals. Many others are also protesting against the owner of the kennel and had stood in front of her house protesting against her.

In other parts of the country, protesters are also calling the police to shutdown illegal kneels. In Santa Maria da Feira, south of Porto, police was called as protesters demanded the closing of an another illegal kennel. The owner was insulted and confrontations between her and protesters were prevented by the police.

The statue of navigator Christopher Columbus, located in the Saint Catherine park, in Funchal, was knocked down and vandalized at dawn on Sunday, a source from the municipal presidency office told Lusa.

"We contacted the police as soon as we heard about it," said the source, adding that the statue "has some cracks". He also informed that "the city council is trying to understand whether there is greater damage or not" and that "the best way to collect it for restoration and put it back as soon as possible" is being evaluated.

The Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Gouveia, posted the following message on Facebook: "Funchal is a cosmopolitan and multicultural city that has always cultivated tolerance to differences, welcomed those who visited, fought for equity and justice and embraced its identity with proud. Today will be no different. This Sunday the city dawned tainted by some episodes of urban vandalism perpetrated during the past dawn. Whether they are the result of nocturnal excesses or to underline any ideological position, nothing justifies attacking the heritage, material or immaterial, of Funchal. First floating wind farm in Europe is operating in the coast of Viana do Castelo:

Quote
Money - Europe's first floating wind farm is Portuguese and already operational

Quote
WindFloat Atlantic, the first floating wind farm in Continental Europe, is already fully operational and providing clean energy to Portugal's electricity grid, EDP announced.

All that was missing was the connection of the last of the three platforms to the power cable that runs the 20 kilometers of distance that separate the wind farm from the station installed in Viana do Castelo - an operation that was successfully concluded and that allows these wind farms installed in the middle of the ocean already supplying power to the grid.

The energy that is being generated comes from 8.4 MW turbines, the largest in the world ever installed on a floating platform.

"WindFloat Atlantic, which has a total installed capacity of 25 MW, is the world's first semi-submersible floating wind farm and will generate enough energy to supply the equivalent of 60,000 users per year, saving almost 1.1 million tons CO2 ", informs EDP, in the note sent to newsrooms.

This project is the result of a partnership between EDP Renováveis, which holds the majority share of 54.4%, and Engie (25%), Repsol (19.4%) and Principle Power (1.2%). These companies formed Windplus.

Wildfires - One of the worst days so far this year in terms of wildfires. 113 wildfires across the country, some quite big, mobilizing 4,600 firefighters. Some were injured during the combat:

"One of the most complicated days": Civil Protection takes stock of the various fires that plague the country

Quote
Civil Protection says that today was one of the "most complicated" days in terms of fires, because there were many and at the same time, counting until 7:30 pm, 113 fires, which mobilized 4,600 operatives.

The assessment was made in a balance of the day at a press conference of the second national commander of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), André Fernandes.

(...)

According to the data released, the most worrying fires at 7:30 pm were Mirandela and Torre de Moncorvo (Bragança), Sernancelhe (Viseu), Alijó (Vila Real), Sabugal (Guarda), and Fundão (Castelo Branco). The Porto de Mós fire (Leiria), which had been plowing since 2 am, was "almost overpowered", the same with Mirandela's, said André Fernandes.

The districts with the most fires were Porto (23), Viana do Castelo (13), Braga (12), Aveiro (12) and Vila Real (nine).

André Fernandes said he had no information of homes in danger and reported a serious wounded, a civilian burned in the Alijó fire, and four lightly wounded operatives throughout the day, in addition to six assisted at the fires. An EDP worker was reported missing, but it was a false alarm.

There is also, said the official, no major routes cut due to the flames (only the A4, in Mirandela, was momentarily cut).

SOS Racismo organization files complaint to the police and the DA office after a protest in front of their headquarters, labeled a "KKK parade" by them:

SOS Racismo will make a complaint to the DA office for a "Ku Klux Klan parade"

Quote
SOS Racismo filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office after its headquarters hosted a far-right demonstration.

The case goes back to the last weekend and the participants could be members of the National Resistance, which brings together activists from the New Social Order, National Renovator Party and Portugal Hammer Skins. According to Público newspaper, the association accuses them of "inciting hatred and violence".

In the images posted on social media, it is possible to see the group dressed in black, with white masks and holding torches - in everything similar to the organization that emerged in the United States, from 1865 to 1866, right after the American Civil War - which led SOS Racismo to classify the action as a "Ku Klux Klan military parade".

The far-right group claims that it spoke out against "anti-national racism" and paid tribute to "dead policemen", according to a Facebook post.

Poverty in Portugal: Number of people asking for State support rises 6% in five months after 2 years of going down.

"It is a serious problem." There are more 12,000 people receiving RSI since the pandemic began

Quote
In the last five months, the number of people receiving Social Insertion Income has risen from 200,000 to 212,000, according to Público newspaper, a figure that interrupts a downward trend that had been maintained for almost two years. The European anti-poverty network calls for taking the increase in the number of poor people in Portugal very seriously.

The magnitude of this increase surprises Father Agostinho Jardim Moreira, president of the section of the European anti-poverty network in Portugal, stating that it is "a very high number", a "serious problem" that can come to " affect health, school and will have a series of very serious consequences ".

"It is a lot of people in a short time", he recalls, since the data are from "the last two or three months", which should lead the country to "face the problem with great care and responsibility".

Budget deficit: The deficit has risen almost 1800% since January.

Quote
Public deficit from January to July explodes almost 1800%

Quote
The accumulated public deficit in the period from January to July this year reached 8,332 million euros, which represents an increase of this imbalance in the order of 1770% compared to the same seven months of last year (the deficit in July 2019 was 445 million euros euros), indicates a note sent to newspapers by the office of the Minister of Finance, João Leão.

According to the ministry, in just one year (until the end of last July) there was a “worsening as a result of the pandemic of 7,853 million euros compared to the same period”.

(...)

For example, the Finance ministry highlights “the reduction in tax and contributory revenue as a result of the sharp decrease in economic activity caused by the more intense period of collection and use of the lay-off”. The lay-off regime, which cut wages and working hours for almost 900,000 workers, was in effect from late March to late July.

In addition to the impact of the pandemic on income and expenditure, João Leão's tutelage also highlights “the following extraordinary policy measures to support families and companies” that explain “a further deterioration of the balance of at least 2,271 million euros”.

Camarate 1980 case: New book defends that members of the US Republican Party and the CIA planned the air crash the killed the then PM Francisco Sá Carneiro and his defense minister.

Quote
Camarate: "Sale of arms to Iran by the US motivated the attack" that killed Sá Carneiro

Once in a while, the Camarate case poops in the headlines. This time, a new book written by Alexandre Patrício Gouveia, brother of one of Sá Carneiro's aides that was also killed in the crash, reveals that the air crash was planned by at least 5 members of the US Republican Party and several members of the CIA. The reason of the attack seems to be the sale of weapons to Iran. Defense minister, Adelino Amaro da Costa, opposed the sale of the weapons and wanted to prevent Portugal to become a path of shady and illegal sales of weapons. According to Mr Gouveia, the support of PM Sá Carneiro was the last straw and that the Americans would not accept that a little country like Portugal would block the deal.
