3,000 people protested in Lisbon against the government's Covid lockdown policies:

Quote
Covid-19: Close to 3,000 people protested in Lisbon against the management of the pandemic

Quote
Lisbon, 20 March 2021 (Lusa) - Almost 3,000 people demonstrated today in Lisbon against the management of the covid-19 pandemic in Portugal and for greater individual and social freedom, in a protest that was also repeated in several European and world cities .

The demonstration began at Edward VII Park and went down Liberty Avenue until it ended at Rossio, where most of the people were concentrated, where chants were sung and where the speeches of the representatives of the various movements involved were spoken.

The vast majority of the protesters showed up without an individual protection mask and did not keep a social safety distance, with many still appearing with Portuguese flags and posters with protest messages, such as: 'Covid-1984', 'Give back freedom' , 'Let the children live', 'The virus is the media', 'We know how to think and decide' or 'Costa, Marcelo and DGS: See you in Nuremberg'.

Over the course of more than three hours of protest action, the national anthem or 'Grândola Vila Morena', by Zeca Afonso, was also sung, but the focus was on the speeches of the different speakers, who criticized the dimension of the restriction measures and remembered the non-covid victims, who said they were left alone and forgotten in this pandemic.

This action was organized on the Internet and was monitored by a device of the Public Security Police, which did not register any incidents, with the exception of a few cases brought up by alcohol consumption on the public road.

In Portugal, 16,762 people died from 817,080 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.

Yep, originally called "Liberty Park", it was renamed after Edward's VII visit to Lisbon in 1903 to strengthen the Anglo-Portuguese alliance. It's actually a nice park and with good views of the Tagus river and Liberty avenue:

Social media on fire as an American fashion stylist sells a traditional Portuguese jersey as her own creation:

Quote
Fashion: Shame on You - Portuguese invade Tory Burch's social networks, accused of usurping the traditional Poveira shirt

Quote
Everything identical to the poveira jerseys, a tradition with more than a century, continues to be sold for almost 700 euros by the American stylist, without any reference to its origin.

PUBLICO disclosure that the American fashion designer Tory Burch is selling traditional folk jerseys for almost 700 euros, or copies of them, as one of her creations, without any indication of origin, has led dozens of people to invade the networks of the businesswoman, to accuse her of usurpation of an element of the cultural heritage of Póvoa de Varzim. In between, stories of other Burch problems are recovered with alleged copies of clothing.
(...)

My hometown is furious with this. The mayor is trying to contact Tory Burch but with no success. However, they have erased the original description of the jersey, which stated it had Mexican origins LOL, meaning they are already aware of the controversy.

Social media on fire as an American fashion stylist sells a traditional Portuguese jersey as her own creation:

Update on this controversy:

The American fashion designer apologized but Póvoa de Varzim city hall says that's not enough and will sue the fashion designer in the US:

Quote
Apologizing is not enough: Póvoa wants to repair damages caused by wearing a sweater. “I don't spare them anything. A lot of people died with that shirt ”

Quote
After the news and protests through social media, Tory Burch, an American stylist who plagiarized the folk shirt, has already made an apology on social media. She herself says that she will work with Póvoa de Varzim City Hall to recognize the tradition.

On Thursday afternoon, Tori Burch admitted the mistake in posting on Twitter and Facebook. "We sincerely apologize to the Portuguese - it was brought to our attention that we mistakenly attributed a shirt from our Spring 2021 collection as inspired by Baja-Mexico".

The North American states that the team is “immediately correcting the error and working together” with the Póvoa de Varzim City Council “in order to find the best solutions to support local artisans”. “We are correcting this error right away, and we will notice and honor that this shirt was inspired by Portuguese traditions. We want to recognize this important tradition even more ”.

Póvoa de Varzim City Hall moves forward with process:

In turn, at JN online, Aires Pereira, mayor of Póvoa de Varzim, guaranteed that “we will, even today, legally sue the company. We demand the recognition of intellectual property and there will be consequences ”, and added that he already has a lawyer to handle the lawsuit, which will have to be filed in the USA.

It all started weeks ago when the Póvoa Parish Council wrote to Tory Burch about plagiarism without mentioning the fact that the Camisola Poveira. Ricardo Silva said he wrote to the stylist. “I wanted to know if there had been an error in the department of new creations. “I never received a response, but on the website, it went from being” Baja inspired Sweater ”to being“ Sweater Tunic ”and, in the description, references to Mexico disappeared, but there is still no reference to the popular shirts”.

The subject experienced an exponential increase of indignation on the part of the people after the publication of an article in the newspaper Público on Wednesday, in which it explains the creation of the stylist.

So, we now know the real story: Drunken resident invented snipers.

Quote
Siege in Seixal: alcoholic resident invented snipers.

Quote
The police siege of the neighborhood of Santa Marta do Pinhal was motivated by an emigrant who returned this week, after 15 years in France, and who, drunk shot three shots from the roof of his house, into a cafe where several residents were. When the police arrived, he said he was defending himself from hooded barricades in his home, which triggered the entire security apparatus. Witnesses assured JN that the emigrant had been the only one to shoot and there were no other interveners. The man was taken by the PSP, but was released overnight.

Alerted by residents, the police arrived in the neighborhood at 12.20 pm on Tuesday. The sniper, named Roberto, shot at the agents before trying to escape through the roof and surrender, telling the story of the hooded men. After eight hours of a siege that involved the Special Police Unit and negotiators, the agents entered the house and found it empty. On the floor, only casings of cartridges fired by Roberto, who was taken by PSP and released during the night, having returned to the neighborhood.

On Wednesday morning, the suspect was seen being driven out of the neighborhood again by policemen, now handcuffed, but not by the PSP, despite the fact that this force has returned to the scene, to assist a feud between neighbors. The Judiciary Police, which is investigating the case, had not formally made any arrests on Wednesday night, without confirming that they had taken Roberto.

The police intervention on Tuesday night left residents unhappy, as they had waited more than eight hours to be able to return to their homes. However, they showed understanding for the zeal of the PSP. "The agents had to do their job, for the safety of all of us residents," one resident told JN, anonymously. Alberto Cabral, 52, was surprised by the case, as he considers the neighborhood peaceful. "There are many workers, there was never any conflict inside because the neighborhood is full of children, who always play on the street", he guarantees.

Man fined for eating a sandwhich in his car:

Quote
Footage - Man fined while eating sandwich in car in Torres Novas.

Quote
The Torres Novas PSP fined a man, in Lapas, this Thursday, during an inspection action within the scope of the curfew control.

The fined, Rúben Marques, isn't silencing his revolt, as he considers the fine undue. “I work for a cleaning company and for two animal associations, one of them in Lapas. When I came home from work, I stopped the car in a deserted place to rest and eat a sandwich. The police showed up and they fined me 200 euros ”, he complains.

“I have three justifications for the entities I work for. The PSP agent did not accept the explanations ”, he says. Contacted by the CM, the PSP says that the fine was due to the breach of the duty to pay and that the assessed person can contest.

Storm causes a blackout across the island of Madeira:

Quote
Lightning causes blackout in Madeira

Quote
The island of Madeira went under a blackout earlier this Saturday night, due to the effect of the storm that was felt on the archipelago this day.

According to the Diário de Notícias da Madeira, an electrical discharge caused by lightning brought down the Vitória Power Plant system, which supplies the island. In Porto Santo, the light was not affected.

The Jornal da Madeira reports that 24 513 Atmospheric Electric Discharges (DEA) were recorded in the archipelago of Madeira until 6 pm this Saturday, with a range of 150 kilometers from the city of Funchal.

The blackout took place on a day of strong storm in Madeira, with intense rain that left impassable roads and cars partially submerged.

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere had issued a red warning until nine o'clock this Saturday night.

The heavy rain that was felt caused dozens of floods in the center of Funchal. Dário Silva, one of those responsible for the Theater's café, next to the Baltazar Dias Theater, right in the center of the city, told TSF that "the roads are all full of stones, they are all closed, there are walls on the floor and everything is blown up ... You can’t even see anything because we’re out of light ".

Italian mafia leader arrested in a Lisbon hospital while hospitalized with Covid-19:

Quote
Italian mobster hunted in Lisbon hospital with covid-19.

Quote
A leader of the Calabrian mafia, the Ndranghetta, was captured, this Monday, at the St. Joseph Hospital, in Lisbon, where he was hospitalized with covid-19.

The arrest was reportedly accompanied by the Italian police, neither the Portuguese nor the Portuguese authorities having released information about the operation.

Francesco Pelle, 44, has been on the run from Italy since 2017, the year he was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the violent episode in the German city of Duisburg in 2007, which resulted in six deaths.

The killing was the culmination of a war between the Vottari and Pelle families in San Luca, Calabria, which had to do, moreover, with disputes over land for investments in the area of restoration.

Francesco Pelle was even prevented in Italy. But the term of pre-trial detention has expired and, when the Supreme Court of Italy confirmed his conviction, the suspect had already fled to Portugal.

Police is on the hunt for a dozen migrant refugees that landed in the Algarve yesterday:

Quote
PSP is looking for more than ten migrants in Vila Real de Santo António.

Quote
In addition to the three detainees, of Moroccan nationality, the Public Security Police (PSP) of Vila Real de Santo António revealed, this Tuesday, that there are 13 to 14 more migrants escaped in the city. These migrants also traveled on the boat found yesterday at Santo António beach.

This is the seventh vessel that has arrived in the Algarve coast from North Africa, since December 2019.

PSP deputy chief Hugo Marado said at the press conference that the authorities are now looking for other migrants.

"The information was transmitted to the security forces and services in the region and our apparatus, namely o Sotavento, is especially attentive to this issue. It is possible that some are still in Portugal, but the opposite may have happened, in the event of a possible trip to Spain", indicated Hugo Marado.

The PSP deputy also added that the three men who were in detention were found while walking around the city.

"One of our patrols found the conduct and posture of three citizens, strangers from the city, strange, showing some fatigue and disorientation, certainly the result of the lack of knowledge of the place where they were. A set of indications that led us to approach and intercept the three citizens, that later we came to realize that they were in an irregular situation ", explained the representative of the PSP.

At 3 pm today, the three men will be taken to court.

JFYI:

Portugal also uses a traditional census with an online component - instead of a register-based census like in Scandinavia and here.

JFYI:

Yep, but this time it will be mostly online this time. We will start to receive next week, by mail, the logins to file the online inquiries. Between April 19 and May 3, people who have the logins and ability to file online data, have to submit their census inquiries. Those who don't have the ability to do online can contact city halls and parishes for help. And those who don't submit by May 3, will receive a visit of census takers, I believe.

By July, it's expected the preliminary results. According to the INE, this may be one of the last "traditional" census, as the goal is to create a register-based census, by crossing data from different sources.

Galp Energy company, was satirized by activist group against the companies explorations in Mozambique. Galp is planning to sue the activists.

Quote
Lisbon woke up today with several fake advertising panels satirizing Galp, criticizing the closure of the refinery in Matosinhos and the natural gas extraction projects in Mozambique.

Quote
At Alameda D. Afonso Henriques, in Figueira Square or next to Entrecampos station, in Lisbon, some ads with the graphic image of Galp could be seen this morning. A careful reading of her messages, however, implied that something was not right.

With phrases like "Our future is CO2lonialism" - denouncing Galp's involvement in natural gas exploration projects in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique - or "More Profit, Less People" - criticizing the company's decision to close its refinery in Matosinhos - the posters were an initiative designed for April Fool's Day and were part of an international campaign.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the Lisbon activist collective Climáximo indicated that this guerrilla action is part of the initiative #CleanGasIsADirtyLie ("Clean gas is a dirty lie"), which took place in 10 European countries and takes advantage of the motto of April 1 to "help the fossil gas industry finally tell the truth about 'natural' gas."

In a series of publications made by the "Gastivists Network" account on the social network Twitter, it is possible to see that the action carried out in Portugal was accompanied by the placement of posters criticizing Shell in the Netherlands, Iberdrola in Spain or Engie in Belgium .

To SAPO24, Mariana Rodrigues, spokesman for Climáximo, indicated that it was not her collective responsible for this action, but that she "sympathizes" with it, without revealing who the interveners were, indicating only that "the action is claimed for the campaign. "

In a statement, Galp attributes the act to Climáximo and says it has been "the target of a malicious action since yesterday, which improperly uses the brand and the good name of the company". In addition, the company regrets that the campaign takes advantage of "the tragic situation Mozambique is living to spread false news and try to denigrate the company's image on posters ".

JCDecaux Portugal, which owns the advertising spaces that were targeted by the action, has also commented, informing that "the case in question constitutes an act of vandalism and bad faith, stressing that it has never had prior knowledge and / or involvement".
(...)
The placement of the fake posters coincides with the sending of a fake email sent on behalf of Galp that said the company would sell the stake it holds in the new gas exploration projects in Cabo Delgado.

If, on the one hand, the energy company has already denied the false statement, on the other, Mariana Rodrigues denies that it was sent under the #CleanGasIsADirtyLie, despite being "related in content", also not knowing who the authors were.
(...)
The Cabo Delgado region, in northern Mozambique, has been the target of instability and violence by jihadist insurgent groups for the past three years, but the situation has worsened and became headline in the last week by the terrorist invasion of the village of Palma, which resulted in several deaths and injuries, as well as hundreds of displaced people.

This region, rich in natural gas, is where several megaprojects for the extraction of this fossil fuel are being developed, including the largest private investment in Africa, led by the French company Total. Galp owns 10% in one of them, that of Area 4 of the Rovuma basin, led by the Italian oil company Eni and the American company ExxonMobil.

Census 2021 to began next Monday:

Quote
Operation Census 2021 based on the Internet kicks off Monday with delivery of codes.

Quote
The 2021 Census operation begins on Monday with the delivery of letters enabling citizens to respond online to the census questions, conditioned this year by the Covid-19 pandemic.

If in the 2011 Census about 50 percent of the responses were made via the Internet, the National Statistics Institute (INE), which coordinates the entire census, expects this year to increase the number of responses sent electronically.

As of Monday, households will begin to receive letters with codes and passwords that will be used to access censos2021.ine.pt, where they will be able to give their answers from the census day, scheduled for April 19.

It is at this date that all responses must be reported, although the population has until May 3 to send their responses.

Although responses via the Internet are the preferred mode, with the e-Censos application accessible by computer, tablet and mobile phone, INE has alternatives.

People who have no way of accessing the Internet or who cannot be contacted in person can use the support number 210542021 to be able to answer, they can use the e-counter at their parish council or fill out the classic paper questionnaires delivered by the enumerators, who will follow a “strict public health protocol”.

This face-to-face work, which is expected to be “residual”, will also be distributed among the approximately 11,000 enumerators recruited by INE between the end of January and April, who will enter the scene from May 31 to collect responses that have not yet been arrived by phone or by electronic means.

In answering the questions, a procedure for pre-filling variables related to accommodation and buildings will be used for the first time with the data collected in 2011, which can be confirmed or changed.

In the question about profession, economic activity or higher education there will be a new function that gives suggestions to those who are filling out the questionnaire.

The questions to be answered in the questionnaire have some differences this year, with variables coming out and others coming in.

In the questions about the individual situation, one appears about the reason for the migration, if applicable, and there were questions about where the census is being answered, the level of education attended, the number of hours worked or how many workers there are. the company.

In the housing item, you start to ask yourself how long you have lived in the accommodation and if you benefit from renting support, asking questions about the water supply system, sanitary and bath facilities or the source of energy used for heating.

The questionnaire also includes several questions about the type of construction of the building where you live.

Altogether, around 15,000 people will be involved in the realization and treatment of the 2021 Census data.

2021 Census: 66% of all households have received, so far, the codes to file the Census.

Quote
Statistics Portugal: 2021 census has reached more than four million households

Quote
The 2021 Census has already reached more than four million households, 66% of the total, without scams being registered, the president of the National Statistics Institute (INE) announced this Tuesday.

Francisco Lima said that INE intends to conclude by April 18 the process of distributing letters with codes that will allow the Portuguese to participate in Census 2021 via the Internet as of April 19.

"We have 11 thousand enumerators distributing letters to the entire population and, in truth, they are already doing more than that, because they are already part of the housing census. One of the novelties in these Censuses is that there is an association between the letter received with the code and the accommodation that receives it ", explained the president of INE in a presentation session, where the Public Security Police (PSP) was also present.

Citizens who do not have the possibility to answer the 2021 Census remotely or need support can go with the INE letter to the E-counters of the parish councils to do so or, "as a last resort", wait for the questionnaires in paper, which will be delivered from May 31 directly by the enumerators, complying with public health security protocols.
(...)
The response phase begins on April 19, when citizens must complete the Census "preferably via the Internet" through the 'website', but they can also do so by telephone - 21 054 20 21, which in addition to a support line allows, for the first time, to respond to the Census, according to the president of INE.

INE's expectation is that it will not be necessary to impose fines for lack of answers, because there is no history of this situation, however if they are applied they may go up to 25 thousand euros.

INE predicts that the data collection for the 2021 Census will be completed by the end of June and in August the first results will be released.

The Habeas Corpus association, of which the magistrate is the only visible face, called for a demonstration of support to the judge at the door of the CSM.

The judge began to be heard at the CSM at 3 pm and the demonstration had been announced at 2 pm, according to a source linked to the CSM.

The denialist judge is still being heard inside the CSM.

The INE informed that the site also crashed, in a few areas of the country, in the early hours, because of high traffic, but it was rapidly fixed and the Institute said that by the end of today's morning, it was receiving around 130 responses per minute.

Valentina Case: Father sentenced to 25 years in prison and stepmother to 18 years.

Quote
Sandro and Márcia Bernardo were sentenced this Wednesday for the death of Valentina, the nine-year-old girl who died in 2020, in Peniche. The Leiria Court found that the girl's father and stepmother were equally responsible for the crime of qualified homicide.

Sandro Bernardo was sentenced to a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison, with 22 years for the crime of qualified homicide of authorship, 18 months for the crime of desecrating a corpse, nine months for the simulation of homicide and three years for domestic violence. Márcia Bernardo was sentenced to 18 years and nine months, for the crime of homicide qualified by omission and also for desecration of a corpse.

The reading of the judgment followed the line of the prosecutor's accusations and proved all the charges of qualified homicide and desecration of a corpse, in co-authorship, domestic violence and simulation of danger signs.

The ruling was read this Wednesday at the Batalha auditorium, in the district of Leiria. According to the Correio da Manhã, all the details of the public prosecution were proven, namely the various assaults, some of which were of a sexual nature, both on the day of Valentina's death and on the days before the murder, of the father against the child.

Valentina died on May 6, 2020. The child was first reported missing in Peniche, until the father informed the authorities about the location of his daughter's body, in the middle of the forest in the Serra d'El Rei, in Peniche, afterwards three days of searches.
(...)
According to the judge, the attacks were "barbaric" and he was perplexed by the excessive violence and brutality of the homicide. According to the prosecution, Sandro and Márcia Bernardo left Valentina "in agony, in the presence of the other minors, indifferent to her intense suffering".
(...)
The court also proved the thesis that Sandro and Márcia agreed what they were going to say to the Judiciary Police, lying about the girl had run away from home while sleepwalking.
