Michigan and Alabama are intertwined in history: From 1900 to 1970, many Alabamans-- white and Black-- came to Michigan to work in the auto industry. The connection has not always been pretty: on March 25, 1965, Viola Liuzzo, a Unitarian-Universalist civil rights activist from Detroit, was killed by the KKK in Alabama protesting the events surrounding the March 7 attack on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Politically, we have diverged as well: after voting Democratic together in 1960, Michigan voted 2-1 Democratic in 1964 while Alabama voted Republican by a similar margin. In 1976, Alabama voted Carter while Michigan voted for hometown boy Ford. (Did anyone in Alabama vote McGovern-Ford?) In 2016, however, we came together again, this time for Trump; ironically, 3 of the 4 US Senators from these two states are Democrats.

We both love our football, too: Here in Michigan many of us bleed maize and blue. Will that be a match for the Crimson Tide?

Call it. I know it's a longshot, but I'd be remiss if I didn't cast a vote for my Wolverines.

Go Blue!

Really want to believe that Michigan could catch Alabama sleeping due to the letdown of missing the CFP and all NY6 Bowls. Why would their best draft prospects risk their careers on such a meaningless game. But for some reason Bama seems like they are really going to show up. It will make my heart hurt, but Bama will win big.

Good game so far. The Crimson Tide just scored a TD and lead the Wolverines 14-13.

I wish they'd go back to calling it the Tangerine Bowl.
