Commission has voted 5-2 (along partisan lines) to advance the Republican-proposed maps.

Surprise surprise, the Ohio Reform is powerless and useless.

4 year map here we come.

Probably will go to the Ohio Supreme Court first. Who knows what they'll think. There is an anti-gerrymandering majority there.

Unfortunately I can't find the tweet, but the Cleveland area districts are going to have to get cleaned up before the final map. The current maps crack the black community hard.

The Republicans drew extremely partisan maps,  they removed any seats they could that would be tossup or lean D, and packed Democrats whenever they could.

I'd say this should be a very easy court case to make that the maps were drawn to favor a political party.

Hmm... they seem to have 4 black state house seats. I'm not sure if more than that is possible?

Doubt it. There are probably a couple seats in the suburbs of Cincy and Columbus that are more Republican downballot.

Democrats have introduced a counter-proposal to the GOP legislative maps:

Here's a better picture of them -

How can those two Dayton Senate districts be legal?   That can't possibly follow the rules, does it?

People in Dayton are throwing a fit over the State Leg. maps, and rightly so...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/ohio-redistricting-plan-called-illegal-184000966.html

Quote
Nearly all speakers who addressed the proposed redistricting maps for Ohio House and Senate seats at a local hearing criticized them, calling them unconstitutional plans that would not fairly represent voters in Dayton and surrounding areas.

My guess is these maps get struck down by the state Supreme Court. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor (R) really hates gerrymandering and has no problem bucking the Ohio Republican Party. The only question would be the timing it gets to the Ohio Supreme Court.

It's late at night, but apparently the commission is in session. GOP proposed some edits to the previous map the clean up lines that their caucus was uncomfortable with, most in the NE.

The commission missed the deadline.

Also Dewine suggests the maps are unconstitutional.

All the above said, the 4-year maps were passed 5-2. Though I think this is a very fertile field from which the seeds of a fast court challenge and throwaway will grow.

Democrats should follow this brilliant logic in their states....New York Democrats won 100% of statewide elections in the past decade so I guess they're entitled to 100% of the seats, correct?

Bad news, Kevin McCarthy, but the OHGOP seems to think your seat is rightfully blue.

This will be a fun lawsuit. The OH republicans didn't even try to give it the apperance of being fair.

I have real trouble seeing how the OH supreme court upholds this.

Yeah this seems like an in-and-out case. Multiple commissioners deriding the process, lack of transparency, and potential minority vote dilution, and potential voiding of commission compactness and COI guidelines. Of course, when the map gets thrown out 4-3 they are apparently required to order the commission start over this time under their supervision, whereas congressionally the court can take over completely.

Don't see where there any VRA issues?
Columbus has one majority black district. Cincinatti has a 40% black. It may be possible to keep a majority black district there but it would  just make more sense to keep it whole. Cleveland has one majority district and one plurality district.
