Long enough to beat May's term in office, I guess.

Sky broke the news as Rory Stewart was being interviewed. Big smile on his face, as you would expect.

Yep, it's over. Losing nearly half your government in 48 hours is just plain unsurvivable.

Can't rule out that he decides to run in the leadership election.

This is a nice rundown:
https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/05/who-are-the-favourites-to-succeed-boris-johnson

It ignores some of the more socially-right Tory MPs, like Suella Braverman and Steve Baker, who both want to run, but otherwise has a good overview.

He's just stepping down to focus 100% of his attention on bringing down the Deep State. Patriots are in control. Arrests will commence shortly. Everyone who resigned today should be deathly afraid.

I expect people are happy to say anything to get him to quit but wouldn’t be shocked if we have a caretaker

I never thought I would say this. But I’d be 100% behind the appointment of Dominic Raab as interim-PM.

If Parliament recommends his appointment to the Queen, but leaves the party leadership empty, he should (it’s kinda untested)  only be PM until the party finds a more viable replacement, and appoints them party leader, which would change the advice given to the Queen.

Johnson wants to be the caretaker PM, but he’s lost so much political authority that I’m not sure it’s viable.

Will Johnson remain Prime Minister until a successor is elected?

In my opinion, the Tories have lost that much support that they no longer have a mandate to govern, but I guess a snap election isn't going to happen.

It is said that he will, but there will be a lot of people not happy about that. Of course, the likes of Theresa May and Michael Howard were effectively coronated as Tory leaders.

Johnson’s allies have briefed that he wants to stay on as a caretaker PM, in office while a leadership race runs - finally resigning at the Conservative conference in October. I don’t think that line will hold personally.

It would require him to be able to reapppoint resigned ministers, who’d have to agree to serve under his fractured leadership - because he’s run out of viable candidates.

I personally think that we’ll be forced into a situation where one of his deputies (either Deputy PM or the Chancellor) get the job for 8-12 weeks.

Theresa May's lame duck period between resigning as party leader and then Boris being elected and taking over as PM took 45 days.  If Boris hangs on, he still has 50+ government positions to fill for the next very uncomfortable few weeks.

Here are the final numbers on yesterday’s resignations, and just how atypical they were:

George Freeman, one of today's resignees, has made a brutal tweet saying that he should be gone as PM today and apologise to Her Majesty.
