Again, it's London Young Labour. This is fundamentally a story about people's reactions to having too much time on their hands during lockdown, it doesn't tell you much about the party as a whole.

I've never understood the venerance of Sands in that community; the man was a terrorist who committed suicide because he was unhappy about wearing a uniform.

Perhaps all is not quite yet lost?

No, all is indeed apparently lost

It's reasonably simple - he's one of the very few IRA prisoners known more for his actions in prison than the things that got him locked up in the first place.

Though I'd note that it's not like there's much reluctance about lauding the prisoners who are primarily known as killers either.

Let's not forget shall we that the venerators of Sands are not merely now actually in government, but even get effectively subsidised by the UK in the process.

And the account in question is effectively a full time trolling operation, so those making po-faced pearl clutching statements like the above reveal more about themselves than the party Wink

Wasn't the current leader of SF a bit young for that?

Well, until recently it *was* pretty much the same people in the NI government.

More to the point perhaps, Blair's defenders often point out the GFA as one of his great achievements - totally fairly as well IMO (though it should be acknowledged that Major started it all) But one of the key - and entirely foreseeable - consequences of it was SF gaining at least a share of power. Those of his self-declared supporters who now come across as Roy Mason stans are being a tad ahistorical.

(as is, in fact, the case in other areas of the Blair legacy - but that's for a wider discussion)

Interesting that some teenagers with a Twitter account is apparently a bigger disqualifying factor than the unravelling tragedy caused by the governing party in Britain having the most incompetent political response to Coronavirus out of every country in Europe. Just saaaaayin.

None of us here are saying that, but this sort of stuff makes it harder for Labour to get its message across.

Also, I'd argue that at least two countries have had worse responses. They're both former Soviet states.

C'mon, London Young Labour: let's not pretend that the unionists in Northern Ireland don't deserve an opinion on their country, & that you f**king middle class London students know a damn thing about Ireland. That you'd tear the wound right open again for your vision of what Ireland should be, regardless of what the peace process has already determined, is disgusting. Groups like you aren't only a blight on Labour; you're a blight on the left. I'll say it again: self-proclaimed socialists who proudly champion things that'd undoubtedly lead to violence are disgusting.

Ireland is a settled question, re-litigating this stuff helps no one. They're just trying to be edgy and cool like it's still the 70's. Labour has completely jumped the shark to the point wherever you want to say about Johnson he's better than the alternative.

It hasn't made its way into the news, it's just a minor Twitter spat. By the time the usual suspects in the press can get airtime for stories like this, it's highly likely that the current faction will no longer be in control of London Young Labour.

To be fair, a large chunk of NI Unionists actively want that wound re-opened. Indeed it's the heart of everything they do to try and hobble the legislative process.

One benefit of Corbyn no longer leading Labour may be the mainstream media no longer giving any random idiot sounding off on Twitter far more prominence than they ever actually deserved.

West Wing-itis is indeed a serious affliction of the political class in this country.

I gave up after one season because I watched it after I'd reached political maturity and just spend the whole time going 'god this is naive'... the President doesn't spend 40 minutes talking to his bag carrier.. I didn't even get onto the political hijinks involded (I know there some farcial plot which sees them replacing a SCOTUS vacancy with an arch conservative because he's smart....)

I came on here to post that once again Keir gave the political equilvant of a happyslap in PMQs.

Shocking that for the third time in a row they've tried to accuse Starmer of being wrong about something... QCs don't tend to get things wrong when they've had 7 days to prepare.

Agreed. There should be a couple reasonable third parties, who actually win seats regularly. If only!

The £100,000,000,000 (or so) question now of course is whether Corona will possibly "mask" any fallout from a lack of a deal between the UK and the EU in this transition period. As a first thought, one might think it would rather just compound the economic misery, but who can tell in these strange times?
